A Dino Tamer In Fairy Tail

Chapter 11: Chapter 11 - Taming a Raptor

Two weeks later

The forest had become Kael's home. Over the past two weeks, he had pushed himself to his limits, honing his skills and testing the boundaries of his strength. Every day was a battle against nature, fending off wild creatures, hunting for food, and practicing his combat techniques.

His metal spear, purchased with the money he'd made selling meat, had become an extension of himself. Its weight felt natural in his hands, its sharp tip gleaming in the dappled sunlight as he spun and thrust it during training. He found the spear to be a good weapon against these creatures, he could keep them at bay as well as hurt them. Unlike Erza or the swordsmen, a spear suits him better.

Kael's body had toughened, his muscles more defined, his reflexes sharper. Hunting small predators and scavengers in the forest had provided him with plenty of practice, and he had developed strategies for taking down even the most elusive prey.

Despite this, Kael had one rule: Bobo stayed at the small base he'd built near a rocky outcrop. The bird was loyal but unpredictable, and Kael couldn't risk having him get hurt or cause trouble during his more dangerous ventures.

Today, as Kael sat by a campfire at his base, eating the last of the venison he'd roasted the night before, he stared at the bracelet on his wrist. After spending some time being accompanied, being alone surprisingly didn't bother him, although he would have liked to have one more person besides Bobo.

He stood, his meal finished, and grabbed his spear. It was time.

Kael adjusted the leather bracer on his arm, his mind focused on his next goal: the raptor pack that roamed deeper in the forest. He scouted them a few days earlier, watching from the bushes as they moved through their territory. There were at least five of them, led by a larger, more aggressive raptor. It could have been considered as an "alpha", but the true alphas he knew were much rarer and more terrifying as well as often alone. If it's like ARK, he hopes he doesn't run into one anytime soon or he's a dead man. In a magical world, they'd be even more terrifying.

To tame a raptor, Kael knew he had to defeat one of them in combat. Each raptor of the pack wouldn't follow a weaker creature, and neither would the system recognize the taming process if he didn't establish dominance.

He left the base, Bobo squawking a quiet protest from the makeshift pen Kael had built. "Stay here, buddy," Kael said, patting the bird on the head. "I'll be back before you know it."

Bobo tilted his head, letting out a low trill as Kael disappeared into the dense forest.

---

Kael moved swiftly but cautiously, his spear held at the ready. He was heading toward the raptors' hunting ground, a clearing surrounded by tall ferns and boulders. His heart beat steadily, a mix of anticipation and adrenaline coursing through his veins.

A while ago he wouldn't have the strength to face one but now he knows he can tame one. His strength will increase exponentially as time goes on; these dinosaurs are considered mere animals, he knows he has to hurry up and become stronger. A single raptor isn't a problem now.

Reaching the edge of the clearing, he crouched low, scanning the area. Kael crouched low in the underbrush, his metal spear gripped tightly in his hand. The raptors were there, as he had expected, their sleek, scaly forms blending seamlessly with the forest shadows. The leader stood in the center, its green-and-black scales shimmering in the sunlight. It was larger than the others, its claws digging into the ground as it tore into the carcass of a wild boar.

This leader, Kael knew, was his target. He had no interest in having a basic raptor, he wanted to have the strongest one among them.

Velociraptor (Leader):

Trait: "Agility" - Improves host's ability to dodge or react quickly in combat.

Special Trait: "Pack Instinct+" - Boosts the host's coordination and awareness when fighting as part of a group. When leading a group during a fight, improve the stats of everyone by 10%.

Obtentions Chances: "Agility" = 10%, "Pack Instinct+" = 1%

Taming Condition (Level 12): Dominance – To tame a Raptor, the host must defeat it in single combat without assistance, proving themselves as the Leader.

XP Reward: 500 (single) or 1,200 (if defeating an alpha leading a pack).

Kael's heart pounded in his chest as he refocused on the pack. He had spent the last two weeks preparing for this, honing his skills, hunting smaller predators, and mastering the use of his spear. But this was on a different level entirely. Raptors were fast, intelligent, and deadly. Taking on one was fair enough, taking on six was near suicidal with his current strength. But he didn't have to fight them all. Just the leader.

If he manages to tame this raptor, he will be able to tame others more easily and therefore create an army, but this will mainly help him tame stronger dinosaurs.

"Stick to the plan," Kael reminded himself, inhaling deeply. His strategy was simple but risky: isolate the leader, force it into single combat, and dominate it into submission. The system's taming rules demanded that he overpower the leader to prove his worth so he has to fight him legitimately.

He exhaled, steeling himself, and threw a small rock toward the far side of the clearing. The raptors froze, their heads snapping toward the sound. A low growl rippled through the pack as they prowled toward the disturbance, leaving the leader standing alone in the center, watching its subordinates investigate.

Now.

Kael erupted from the underbrush, sprinting toward the leader with his spear poised to strike. The raptor's head snapped toward him, its golden eyes narrowing as it snarled and braced itself.

Kael thrust his spear forward, aiming for the raptor's torso. The beast dodged with a swift sidestep, its claws swiping toward him in retaliation. Kael twisted his body, narrowly avoiding the attack, and swung the butt of his spear, catching the raptor across the jaw.

The impact staggered it, but only for a moment. The leader lunged forward, its jaws snapping inches from Kael's arm. Kael rolled to the side, coming to his feet just as the raptor pivoted to face him again. Its growl was deeper now, more guttural, a clear warning.

The other raptors, having realized the distraction was a trick, began to return, their growls echoing through the clearing.

"Perfect," Kael muttered under his breath, gripping his spear tightly. He couldn't afford to let them interfere.

Kael swung the spear in a wide arc, forcing the leader to backpedal. He shifted his stance, his muscles tensed like coiled springs. The raptor darted forward, feinting with its claws before snapping at him again. Kael anticipated the move and jabbed his spear forward, the tip grazing its side and drawing a shallow line of blood.

The leader hissed in pain, its movements growing more erratic. Kael could feel the tension in the air, the beast sizing him up, testing his reflexes. He didn't need to beat it outright, just enough to make it recognize his dominance. But the raptor wasn't ready to submit yet.

The other raptors were closing in, their snarls growing louder. Kael cursed under his breath. Time was running out.

The leader lunged again, its claws swiping at his torso. Kael twisted his body, the talons tearing through his tunic but missing flesh. He countered with a thrust of his spear, the tip driving into the raptor's shoulder. It howled in pain, rearing back, but Kael didn't let up. He yanked the spear free and swung the butt of the weapon, cracking it against the beast's skull.

The leader staggered, its legs wobbling. Its packmates growled, now mere steps away.

Kael gritted his teeth and roared, slamming the butt of his spear into the ground and locking eyes with the raptors. He stepped toward the leader, his posture tall and imposing despite the exhaustion creeping into his limbs.

The leader growled weakly, its gaze meeting Kael's. It was a battle of wills now. Kael took another step forward, his spear poised, and let out a guttural shout that echoed through the clearing.

The leader flinched, lowering its head slightly. The other raptors hesitated, their snarls fading into uneasy growls. One by one, they backed away, slinking into the underbrush.

Kael exhaled shakily, his grip on the spear tightening as he approached the leader. The beast's golden eyes flicked up at him, wary but no longer defiant. Slowly, it lowered its body to the ground, its head dipping in submission.

The system's interface appeared in Kael's mind, faint and unobtrusive.

Kael let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding, his body sagging slightly with relief. He reached out cautiously, placing a hand on the raptor's head. Its scales were warm and rough beneath his palm, and it let out a low rumble, almost a purr. There was no hostility now, only recognition.

He did better than expected, he was actually stronger than he thought. The Raptors are no longer a problem for him, indirectly relieving him.

"Guess we're partners now," Kael murmured, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

---

Kael leaned back against the rough stone of his small camp, his fingers running over the interface of the bracelet on his wrist. He had just allocated the new stat point he earned into Strength, boosting it further to 135%.

A smirk played on his lips as he flexed his arm experimentally. He could feel the difference already, this system improves his stats in percentage according to his own body, when he reaches high levels he does not even imagine his strength, especially if he manages to learn a magic so as not to depend on his system.

Beside him, the newly tamed raptor, now named Blue after the infamous velociraptor from the Jurassic Park tales he vaguely remembered, sat watching him intently. Its golden eyes glimmered with intelligence and curiosity, its tail twitching against the dirt. It was oddly calm for a predator, though Kael was certain that beneath that composed exterior was a deadly predator waiting his order to attack anybody.

On the other side of the campfire, Bobo sat perched on a log, preening its feathers as if trying to remind everyone that it was still the original companion. The dodo eyed Blue warily, clearly not thrilled about the new addition to the camp.

Kael tore a strip of meat from the skewer roasting over the fire and tossed it toward Blue. The raptor snapped it out of the air effortlessly, its sharp teeth gleaming as it tore into the meat. Kael leaned back with a satisfied sigh. For the first time in a long while, he felt like things were falling into place.

Then, chaos erupted.

Bobo waddled over to Blue with a determined squawk, puffing up its chest as it stood right in front of the much larger predator. Kael froze mid-bite, watching the ridiculous scene unfold.

"Bobo… what are you doing?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern.

Bobo let out another loud squawk, clearly issuing some sort of challenge. Blue tilted its head, seemingly amused, before lowering itself to the dodo's level, its sharp teeth bared in what looked suspiciously like a grin.

"Oh no," Kael muttered.

Bobo, undeterred by the massive predator's teeth, pecked Blue on the snout. Hard.

The raptor jerked back in surprise, blinking rapidly as if it couldn't believe what had just happened. A low growl rumbled in its throat, and Kael shot to his feet, his heart racing.

"Bobo! Stop that!" he shouted, rushing over to intervene.

But Bobo, emboldened by its initial "victory," lunged at Blue again, flapping its stubby wings and pecking furiously. Blue snapped its jaws, not at Bobo, but at the air near its head, a clear warning shot.

Kael grabbed Bobo mid-squawk, holding the flailing bird at arm's length. "What is wrong with you? Do you have a death wish?" he scolded.

Blue stared at the dodo in Kael's hands, its tail flicking with barely restrained irritation. Kael could almost see the raptor debating whether to eat Bobo or let the insult slide.

"Blue," Kael said, addressing the raptor with a nervous chuckle. "He's… uh… just trying to assert dominance. You know, pack dynamics and all that."

Blue let out a sharp bark that sounded suspiciously like laughter before sitting back on its haunches.

Kael sighed in relief, setting Bobo back down on the ground. "Alright, you two. Play nice, or I swear I'll..."

Before he could finish, Bobo darted behind him and squawked defiantly at Blue, as if declaring, Yeah, that's right! I'm the boss here!

Kael groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I'm already regretting this," he muttered.

Blue huffed, clearly unimpressed, and padded over to the other side of the camp to curl up in the shade. Its golden eyes stayed trained on Bobo, however, as if to say, You're lucky he likes you.

Bobo, seemingly oblivious to the danger it had narrowly avoided, began strutting around the camp as if it had just conquered the world.

Kael sat down heavily by the fire, rubbing his temples. "This is going to be a long partnership," he muttered.

He glanced at Blue, who was now flicking its tail lazily as it dozed, and then at Bobo, who was now poking at a shiny rock. For a moment, Kael debated whether taming dinosaurs had been a mistake.

"Next time," he said to no one in particular, "I'm taming something less dramatic. Like… a triceratops."

He leaned back, letting the tension ease from his shoulders. Tomorrow, he would head out to tame another raptor, but for now, he had a camp to survive.

If there's trouble with just these two, he can't imagine a pack of raptors...
