Chapter 113.1
Chapter 113.1. The Abyss Of Darkness
Everyone at the academy naturally noticed the strange phenomenon.
First, when the entire academy dimmed, everyone looked outside, confirming that it was covered by a pitch-black wall.
Panic ensued—almost immediately. A tremor echoed throughout the academy.
“…Huh?”
Whose dazed voice was that?
But it was understandable. The scene before them was something that most of those present, if not all, had never seen before.
—A horde of black monsters that filled the horizon.
It’s not that monsters forming hordes is unheard of. There are, after all, monsters that naturally have such tendencies, and in an event known as a Stampede, where monsters overflow from labyrinths, it’s not uncommon for a diverse mix of monsters to attack.
However, there was one major difference here.
A particularly stark, despairing difference.
There were far too many.
Even in a Stampede, this would be unimaginable. A horde of monsters so vast that it could swallow the entire academy—and yet, they were slipping through the black wall and still showed no sign of stopping.
A bizarre sight. Sudden violence. And above all…why was this happening to the academy all of a sudden?
In a whirlwind of questions, fear, and confusion, the academy quickly descended into chaos.
“Aaaaahhh!!”
“What are these things?! Where did they come from, what’s going on—?!”
“Do you have any idea where you are—eek!”
Despite it being after school, it was still relatively early, so many students and teachers remained at the academy.
Without exception, everyone was thrown into utter confusion, with most simply fleeing into the school building, driven by fear.
However, among them, there were a few who took different actions. For example,
“—Hmph, how pathetic, every last one of them!”
Count Geist, the B Class instructor, who confidently pushed past the fleeing students to step forward.
A few other teachers and students with combat skills also glared directly at the monster horde.
—That said,
Their minds weren’t filled with any noble resolve to protect the academy.
“No matter how many there are, they’re just monsters. For them to cower at something like this shows they’re still just children.”
“Exactly! This is the perfect opportunity to teach them again—only we can protect this academy and guide the students!”
Count Geist declared, and the other teachers followed suit.
In their hearts, they dismissed the monsters as ‘nothing more than that,’ confident in their ability to deal with them using their magic. Their assurance stemmed from their past success in easily defeating monsters with their bloodline magic.
And…the overwhelming military success they sought to silence the pressure from the Yurgen faction—such as the feat of spectacularly repelling a massive horde of monsters attacking the school.
Thus, without a shred of doubt in their inevitable victory and success, Count Geist and those who followed him charged head-on into the monster horde.
What appeared before Count Geist were large, bee-like monsters.
“Do you think I would flinch at a mere swarm of monsters? I’ve faced Stampedes multiple times!”
Raising his magical power, the Count began chanting a spell towards the approaching swarm.
He unleashed the magic that was the source of his absolute confidence.
“Bloodline Magic—[Key Lei Carla]!”
In response, lightning magic appeared.
A powerful band of lightning, the primary reason he could succeed the title of Count, spread across the area.
The lightning attacked the swarm all at once, its firepower sufficient to incinerate the bee monsters completely—
—But their dismissal of the monsters as ‘nothing more’ only lasted until that moment.
What Count Geist saw after the burnt air cleared and the dust settled was,
“…Wha…”
A black sphere.
A large sphere with a diameter about the size of a human.
It didn’t take long for him to realize that this sphere was formed by the bee monsters gathering together.
It was, in other words, a dense formation.
A defensive formation that reduces the surface area exposed to attacks, minimizing damage by clustering together. This time, the bee monsters had gathered in a perfect spherical formation to fend off Count Geist’s lightning.
The formation worked perfectly, and although the lightning magic had hit directly, only the monsters on the outer edge of the sphere were killed. Their bodies served as shields, and the lightning didn’t penetrate to the monsters inside.
As a result, Count Geist’s full-force magic had been thwarted, with only a fraction of the swarm being sacrificed.
With a sudden movement, the sphere dispersed, and the remaining unscathed monsters thrust their stingers at him.
“Wh—Why are monsters doing this—?!”
Count Geist, who had intended to deal a decisive blow without any doubt, was utterly flustered. His next attack would require time to prepare, and it was clear that the monsters wouldn’t miss this opportunity.
“Kuh—!”
With no other choice, Count Geist retreated.
The bee monsters pursued him relentlessly. While retreating, he managed to counterattack with his lightning bloodline magic, gradually reducing their numbers.
After a few minutes of fleeing, he finally succeeded in driving away the bee monsters.
“Hah…hah…These damned monsters…to think they’d cause me this much trouble—?!”
But then he realized. Where he was after his desperate flight.
—Surrounded by a horde of monsters that were a fusion of a giant bear and a tiger.
“…No way.”
He hadn’t been escaping—he’d been ‘herded.’
In that instant of realization, he knew there was no escape left. His only option now was to break through somehow, but despair overtook him.
With a whoosh, a red light flared to his right.
He turned to see a monster, about the size of a mouse, perched in a tree. The monster was spewing a fist-sized ball of fire from its mouth.
That alone wasn’t a problem. Some monsters could use magic, and this one was relatively weak among them. That single flame wasn’t a significant threat.
The problem was.
That a hundred or so of those monsters were clustered in the tree.
And they were all spitting fire magic, combining their attacks…growing into a giant fireball that could easily engulf and overpower Count Geist.
There was no way to block it. In his current state, he had no means of defending against such magic.
Nor could he flee. He was surrounded by large, powerful monsters.
In other words—checkmate.
“Hi—”
Count Geist, realizing this, finally felt his face contort in fear.
He had plenty of battlefield experience. As he had declared, he had faced multiple Stampedes.
But all of those battles had been easy wins. He had never been cornered like this.
Therefore, he couldn’t come up with any plan to turn the situation around.
Helplessly, with a terrified, disbelieving expression, he stood frozen as the tree-bound monsters finally unleashed their fireball.
It surged unstoppably towards Count Geist—
“—[Soteira Trivia]!”
A purple light blocked the attack.
Simultaneously, purple, semi-transparent soldiers appeared, assaulting the surrounding monsters. The tree-bound monsters were swept away by their combat prowess, and the larger monsters were entangled, their movements sealed.
The situation changed so suddenly that Count Geist stood in shock, his face blank.
From behind him came a sharp, beautiful voice rebuking him.
“—Stand down! You must have realized by now after seeing that. These aren’t…the kind of monsters we know!”
Count Geist turned to see Katia.
But that was all he could do. Overcome with fear, he couldn’t argue against her commanding tone, nor did he remember that she was a student he had once treated harshly in B-Class.
Following her orders, he retreated from the battlefield in disgrace.
