Chapter 120.1

Chapter 120.1. Myself

“No way that’s possible.”

A few days ago.

Clyde barged into Sara’s home to talk about her transfer, and Illuminia tried to force it along, disregarding her wishes. This was the day after Katia took Sara away from them.

Sara had returned to the Hartmann household, both to collect her belongings and to talk to Illuminia one more time.

She couldn’t leave things as they were; it just felt wrong. Whatever her intentions, the fact that Illuminia had raised Sara until now remained unchanged.

More than anything, despite the few real memories they had… they were still family.

So Sara returned home and, this time, clearly told Illuminia: that she would be under the care of the Trakia family from now on, and that she no longer wanted to be a mere projection of her mother—she wanted to find her own ‘self.’

Illuminia’s response?

“That’s impossible.”

“Do you have any idea how long I’ve raised you?”

With a voice and gaze thick with hatred and bitterness, her mother spoke.

“Fifteen years. Do you understand how heavy those fifteen years since you were born are? During all that time, I’ve trained you, and watched over you. Your gestures, appearance, even your intellect, all of it. I drilled it all into you just to make you a princess, just so you’d catch the eye of a worthy gentleman, just to fulfill what I couldn’t! And now you want to throw it all away, and become someone else? You’re dreaming, you foolish girl!”

Her breathing became ragged toward the end. Even so, after getting everything out, Illuminia’s eyes widened, and a twisted, triumphant smile crept onto her face.

“Let me tell you something. You’ll never become anything.”

“!”

“It’s too late for you. After fifteen years of listening to only me, you have no other path but to become me! You ungrateful, disgraceful daughter, you think you can cut me off and find happiness for yourself? That will never be allowed!!”

Her words lashed out like curses, ensnaring Sara.

“You abandoned me, so you’re hollow. There’s nothing left inside of you that can be called ‘yourself.’ You’re just a foolish little girl who can’t do anything on her own. At least you’re lucky to have such kindhearted friends pitying you!”

“—!”

“You’re going to follow those friends, aren’t you? Do as you please. You’ll never become anything, and it suits you just fine to be kept like a pet by that duke’s daughter for the rest of your life!”

With that, Sara left the Hartmann house. Whether it was being chased out, or escaping, it wasn’t clear.

She had no words left to respond with, after hearing what her mother had said.

And now.

“Hah… Are these all the injured?”

Near the barrier created by her [Theur Gy], Sara was relentlessly using [Ars Paulina] to heal those in need.

She was using all of her magical strength to protect the academy, when she asked:

“Y-yeah. But Sara-sama… are you okay?”

A student from Class B, who had been nearby, responded with both an answer and a question.

It was clear that her body was exhausted from using so much magic in such a short time. Her skin was drenched in cold sweat, and her breathing was uneven.

“You’re the cornerstone of the defense. You don’t need to go out of your way to heal all the injured right now…”

“No… it’s fine.”

Though she understood their concern, Sara cut off the advice.

“It’s fine. This is what I’m here for. I’ll protect everyone… so please, let me.”

It was as if she was speaking to herself.

—You’ll never become anything.

Her mother’s words echoed in her mind, as they had been for days.

…I don’t want that, she thought.

She hated the idea of drifting aimlessly. She wanted something concrete, something she could call her own.

That’s why she had tried so hard. She wanted to find something that she could claim as her achievement, something she could proudly say, “This is me.”

She thought she had achieved many things. But still, she lacked the confidence to believe in herself.

So, at the very least, she wanted to be allowed to use the magic she was born with. It was the only thing that gave her a sense of certainty now.

With that determination, Sara lifted her tired head, faced forward, and declared:

“I won’t let the barrier fall. I’ll heal everyone who’s hurt. So please, don’t hold back—”

“Ahh, you truly are too kind. To waste your compassion on such people.”

From nowhere, a voice rang out.

“Wha—?!”

Suddenly, something pitch-black enveloped Sara. Before she could even scream, she was dragged away, disappearing into the darkness.
