Chapter 57
Chapter 57. To The Next Day
The Frembleed family will fall. As mentioned earlier, Xenos’s misdeeds, done freely under Aster’s protection, have come to light.
Xenos will, at best, be demoted to a commoner like Hermes once was, and at worst, be heavily imprisoned as a criminal.
Chris, the brother, though not guilty of embezzlement or similar crimes, will lose all his noble status. Depending on his magical talent, he might become a servant somewhere.
I saw Chris earlier, and something surprising happened.
He was training his magic. And not with his inherited [Mistle Teinn].
──He was activating the [Emerald Tablet] that Hermes had handed over back then.
Indeed, [Emerald Tablet] is a magic anyone can handle. By Hermes passing it on, he also passed on the right to use it.
However, just being able to activate it on one’s own already requires considerable effort, and mastering it demands even more tremendous effort, as explained back then.
He understood this completely, and still. He managed to activate it and was desperately groaning while comparing the dial and the magic alternately.
When Hermes saw this sight, Chris said only one thing.
“Don’t interfere. Even this much takes all my effort.”
A curt remark, but it hinted that Chris had let go of his obsession with Hermes.
Hearing those words, Hermes bowed and left the scene.
Surely, after that battle, something was resolved within him too.
Though it might not have been in the form he wished, if he was stepping toward a new direction, it would be fine to quietly cheer him on as someone related by blood, if not by ties.
He probably doesn’t wish to learn magic from Hermes, nor does he want to.
But, it would be too harsh to learn that independently. Later, Hermes thought of sending him the Rose textbooks he used for study, after finding out where Chris would stay.
Chris might dislike receiving charity from Hermes, but Hermes himself wouldn’t have understood anything without it. He hoped Chris would accept at least this much to start on equal footing.
Another person in the turmoil, Aster, apparently screamed and didn’t understand his situation even after waking up.
His usual denial and delusion. Claiming it was a mistake, and that they used foul play, etc.
But the difference this time was that no one believed him.
Aster’s existence and faith had been maintained by his strength, by never losing.
On the flip side, the moment he lost, his faith crumbled. Considering the manner and opponent of his defeat, it was inevitable that his reputation plummeted.
Those soldiers, being capable and high-ranking enough to be directly under royalty, spread distrust towards Aster, causing his evaluation in the capital to drop sharply.
Many had been internally dissatisfied with the arrogant Aster, so he rapidly lost trust.
Moreover, the over-the-top accusations against Katia, seen as excessive by anyone, led to further condemnation.
He was brought to trial, but predictably continued self-justifying without proper defense.
His lack of remorse was clear, his crimes heavy, and he too would likely be stripped of his royal status.
Then there was Hermes. His treatment was decided just now, and he would continue to serve the Trakia household as before.
Initially, Jurgen considered adopting him, but Katia vehemently opposed for some reason, saying.
“Being family feels… just wrong somehow!”
Jurgen smiled wryly and said, “Well, making him my child without asking might scare Rose.”, so Hermes’s position remained unchanged.
With Aster gone, the capital would be chaotic. The disappearance of such a prominent figure and the resultant power shifts would surely cause turmoil.
That might affect them too.
But it would be alright. As long as they had a firm resolve.
Thinking this, Hermes was walking through the Frenbreed garden when a voice called out to him.
“── Herm!”
Looking up, he saw his master, the purple-haired girl, standing at the gate.
Beside her was her friend, a blonde, blue-eyed girl.
“Katia-sama and Sara-sama. Why are you here?”
“Father said you’d be here today, so I came to pick you up.”
“Pick me up…?”
Just as he was about to ask why, he noticed.
She was unusually cheerful, almost ready to start humming and dancing.
Not just her, even Sara couldn’t hide her joy, though more reservedly.
“Did something good happen?”
“! Well noticed.”
Katia was surprised at Hermes’s insight. But eager to share the news, placed a hand on her chest with delight.
“I can return to school!”
“Oh!”
That was undeniably good news.
Indeed, it made sense. Katia was expelled due to Aster’s selfish accusations. With his influence gone, her reinstatement was only natural.
Rejoicing sincerely, Hermes then asked a question that suddenly came to mind.
“Congratulations. But, what should I do during the day?”
To this, Katia mischievously smiled.
“What are you saying? ──You’re coming too.”
“What?”
Hermes was stunned by the unexpected reply.
“Why?”
“Why? The real question is why not? Our school is for honing magical skills. With your talent, there’s no reason not to recommend you.”
“But, isn’t it for noble children? I’m not with the Frenbreed family──”
“You won’t return, as Father told me. But the Frenbreed family will be dissolved and taken over by Thracia. So, saying you ended up a Thracia servant after losing your home means you’re back among the nobility, as Father explained.”
“That’s quite forceful…”
The logic was reversed, and it made the recent discussion with his father seem pointless.
“Well, it might be a bit much. Father seems to have a reason for wanting you in school, though I don’t know it. Ask him later. … More importantly, Er.”
Katia pouted cutely and gazed at him.
“Do you hate the idea of going to school with me that much?”
“── That’s…”
When put so simply, his heart easily decided.
As a boy of his age and someone whose future was taken at ten, he naturally had an interest in school.
“I’m sorry. Yes, I’d very much like to attend.”
Smiling lightly, he said this, and Katia, blushing, beamed and took his hand.
“Good! That’s why we’re here today. To buy you new clothes for school.”
“Clothes? You don’t need to──”
“No. As my attendant, you must dress well. It’s my honor at stake. Not that I want to see you dressed up… just a little.”
Her personality showed in her half-hearted denial.
She turned to the other girl.
“For this, I asked Sara to come. Her sense of fashion is amazing, almost professional.”
“Eh? Y-Yes!”
Sara, who had been watching their exchange with a smile, was suddenly flustered but nodded.
“I’ll do my best!”
Her expression showed no hint of the guilt or tension that had been there before.
In the past week, they talked a lot and returned to being the close friends they once were.
With relief, Hermes smiled. Katia looked genuinely happy, and Sara also smiled softly.
The carriage carrying the three started moving slowly.
Their day in the capital was beginning anew.
