Chapter 26: Meant to be
The fire crackled softly in the background, casting warm, flickering light over the small clearing. The woods around us were silent, save for the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant sound of water from the river.
Damian sat across from me, his broad shoulders illuminated by the golden glow. I couldn't stop myself from watching him—the way his jaw tightened when he stared into the flames, the way his chest rose and fell with his steady breaths.
"Damian," I said softly, my voice breaking the quiet. He looked up at me, his blue eyes catching the firelight.
"Yeah?" His tone was gentle, but there was a guarded edge to it, as if he was afraid of what I might say next.
I swallowed hard, my heart pounding in my chest. "Thank you—for saving me earlier. I don't think I said it properly."
He leaned back, running a hand through his dark hair. "You don't have to thank me, Reina. I'd do it again without hesitation."
Something about the way he said my name sent a shiver down my spine. I glanced away, trying to calm the storm of emotions swirling inside me.
But Damian wasn't done. He stood and crossed the space between us, crouching down so that he was at my level. His hand reached out, brushing a strand of hair away from my face.
"You've been through a lot," he murmured, his voice low and soothing. "I can see it in your eyes."
I couldn't speak. The warmth of his touch and the intensity of his gaze held me captive.
"Damian…" I started, but whatever I was about to say disappeared when his thumb traced the line of my jaw.
"Reina," he whispered, his face inching closer to mine. "Tell me to stop if this is too much."
I didn't tell him to stop.
His lips brushed mine—soft and hesitant at first, as if he was testing the waters. My breath caught, and before I could think, I leaned into him, deepening the kiss.
His hands cupped my face, holding me gently yet firmly, as if I might vanish at any moment. The world around us faded; there was only Damian—the heat of his skin, the taste of him, the way his touch sent sparks racing across my body.
He pulled back slightly, his breath warm against my lips. "Are you sure?" he asked, his voice rough with emotion.
I nodded, my heart thundering in my chest. "Yes."
His lips claimed mine again, this time with more urgency. He pulled me closer, his hands moving down my back as he explored me with reverence. My fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him even closer as the kiss deepened.
Before I knew it, we were lying on the soft grass, his body hovering over mine. His weight pressed against me, grounding me, yet his touch was impossibly gentle.
His lips left mine to trail down my neck, his breath hot against my skin. I gasped as his mouth found the sensitive spot at the base of my throat. His hands slid under my dress, skimming the bare skin of my thighs.
Every touch, every kiss, sent a wave of warmth coursing through me. I arched into him, unable to hold back the soft moans that escaped my lips.
"Reina," he said, his voice hoarse, filled with desire and restraint. "Tell me if this is too much."
I looked up at him, my cheeks flushed and my body trembling beneath his. "Don't stop," I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Damian's eyes darkened, but there was still a tenderness in his gaze. He leaned down, capturing my lips once more as his hands continued their exploration.
His fingers traced the curve of my waist, slowly inching upward. The fabric of my dress slipped beneath his touch, and soon I felt the cool air against my skin. I shivered, but not from the cold.
"You're beautiful," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. His lips moved to my collarbone, leaving a trail of fire in their wake.
I reached for him, my hands exploring the hard planes of his chest and shoulders. The warmth of his skin under my fingertips made my head spin.
Damian shifted, his lips finding mine again. This time, the kiss was slow and deep, filled with a passion that stole my breath away.
His hand moved to cup my cheek, tilting my head slightly as he deepened the kiss. His other hand slid lower, resting on my hip, drawing me closer to him.
My heart raced, and I felt a surge of emotions—desire, vulnerability, and a deep longing that I couldn't quite name.
"Reina," he whispered against my lips, his voice barely audible. "I don't want to hurt you."
"You won't," I replied, my voice steady despite the storm of feelings inside me. "I trust you."
His gaze softened, and for a moment, it felt as though the rest of the world didn't exist. There was only Damian and the warmth of his touch, the firelight dancing in his eyes.
He leaned in once more, capturing my lips in a kiss that was both tender and consuming. This time, I gave myself to the moment, letting the world around us fade into nothing.
His hands traveled to the small of my back, pulling me closer until I could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against my chest. My fingers moved instinctively, tangling in his hair, tugging gently as I pressed myself against him.
"Reina," he murmured, his voice husky with restrained desire. "Tell me if this is too much. I don't want to hurt you."
"You won't," I whispered, my voice trembling with a mix of nervousness and longing. "I want this, Damian. I want you."
His gaze darkened, the firelight reflecting in his blue eyes as he searched my face for any hesitation. When he found none, his lips curved into the faintest smile, and he leaned down to kiss me again—this time slower, deeper, as though savoring every second.
His fingers slipped beneath the fabric of my dress, sliding it over my shoulders and down my body. The cool air kissed my skin, but Damian's touch was all I could feel. He paused for a moment, his eyes roaming over me, filled with admiration and reverence.
"You're breathtaking," he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. His hand traced the curve of my waist, sending shivers down my spine.
Heat rose to my cheeks, but I couldn't bring myself to look away. Instead, I reached for him, tugging at his shirt until he helped me remove it. My breath hitched as his bare chest was revealed, the firelight accentuating every chiseled line and scar that told a story.
I let my hands explore his body, feeling the strength beneath his skin. He shuddered under my touch, his breath hitching as I traced the muscles of his abdomen.
Damian's lips found mine once more, his kisses growing more urgent as his hands continued their exploration. He gently guided me down onto the soft grass, his body hovering over mine, shielding me from the chill of the night.
His lips trailed down my neck to my collarbone, leaving a fiery path in their wake. I arched into him, a soft moan escaping my lips as his hands cupped my bare breasts. His touch was gentle yet firm, his fingers exploring with a mix of reverence and desire.
"Damian," I breathed, my voice trembling as I reached for him, pulling him closer.
He responded by pressing his lips to mine again, his kisses hungry and insistent. His hands moved lower, skimming the curve of my hips before sliding beneath the waistband of my underwear. He paused, his eyes meeting mine.
"Are you sure?" he asked, his voice thick with emotion.
"Yes," I whispered, my heart pounding. "I've never been more sure of anything."
With that, he removed the last barrier between us, his movements slow and deliberate, as if giving me every chance to change my mind. But I didn't.
As his body pressed against mine, I felt a new kind of closeness, one that went beyond the physical. It was as though every wall I'd built around myself had crumbled, leaving me vulnerable yet safe in his arms.
Damian moved with a tenderness that took my breath away, his every touch and kiss filled with care and passion. My body responded instinctively, arching into him as waves of pleasure coursed through me.
He whispered my name like a prayer, his voice a mix of awe and adoration. "Reina…"
I clung to him, my fingers digging into his back as he brought me to heights I'd never imagined. The world around us blurred, and all that remained was the sensation of his skin against mine, the sound of our breaths mingling, and the overwhelming connection that bound us together.
As we lay entwined beneath the stars, the fire casting flickering shadows over our bodies, I realized that something had changed between us. This wasn't just a fleeting moment of passion—it was the beginning of something deeper, something neither of us could ignore.
Damian brushed a strand of hair from my face, his blue eyes searching mine. "Are you okay?" he asked softly, his voice laced with concern.
I nodded, a small smile playing on my lips. "I'm more than okay."
He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead before pulling me into his arms. I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat as sleep began to claim me once more.
In that moment, beneath the vast expanse of the night sky, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.
