A modern man in America 1930

Chapter 2: chapter 2 Escape and Survive

"Dog Egg, I'm going to get rice. Wait here," said Wang Dagou after five hours of grueling labor. Li Zitao, utterly exhausted, collapsed onto the ground. When he heard it was finally time to eat, Wang Dagou walked out of the factory with two bowls in hand.

"I miss my old life," Li Zitao mumbled, tears welling up. He reminisced about his past as a modern man lounging in bed, playing on his phone and computer, surrounded by snacks.

The intense labor was breaking him. His body felt as though it might fall apart at any moment, the strain making his bones ache with every step.

Suddenly, a loud clang echoed. From behind a machine emerged Jerry, the tall white man who had insulted Wang Dagou earlier. He held a steel pipe and sneered as he approached Li Zitao.

"Hey, little b****, where's your big dog? Has he abandoned you?" Jerry taunted, tapping the steel pipe on the machine.

"What do you want?" Li Zitao asked nervously, stepping back instinctively. Without realizing it, he spoke fluent English, startling even himself.

Jerry paused, his face momentarily confused, before breaking into laughter. "F***, you speak English? That's great!" He raised his arms like a preacher and shouted, "You're mine now! Kneel and open your mouth!"

As Jerry advanced, he began to unbuckle his belt, grinning maniacally. Terrified, Li Zitao turned to run, but he collided with another man's chest, as hard as steel.

"Jerry, I think you've scared him stiff!" the second man laughed, gripping Li Zitao's neck like a vice. Li Zitao struggled in vain; his vision blurred, and the suffocating stench of sweat overwhelmed him.

Jerry threw aside the steel pipe and rushed forward eagerly. He had been eyeing Li Zitao since his arrival, fantasizing about him every night. Now, with no one around to protect him, Jerry intended to claim his prize.

Summoning every ounce of strength, Li Zitao calmed his mind. When Jerry reached for him, he lashed out with a powerful kick to Jerry's groin.

A sickening crunch followed. Jerry crumpled like a shrimp, his face slamming into Li Zitao's back as he collapsed, howling in pain.

The man holding Li Zitao was stunned. His grip loosened just enough for Li Zitao to break free. Fueled by adrenaline, Li Zitao rammed his knee into the man's crotch. Another pained grunt echoed as the second attacker dropped to the ground.

Li Zitao staggered back, panting, and collapsed. Just then, Wang Dagou returned with their food. His eyes widened in shock as he saw Jerry writhing on the ground.

"What the hell have you done, Dog Egg?!" Wang Dagou roared, lifting Li Zitao by the collar and shaking him.

"They tried to assault me, so I kicked them!" Li Zitao shouted back, his eyes red with anger. Though usually timid, he couldn't tolerate the humiliation of being nearly violated.

Jerry, clutching his groin and writhing in agony, cursed and screamed threats, his voice hoarse with rage.

"What do we do now?" Wang Dagou muttered, panic creeping into his voice. He glanced at the fallen men, their faces pale and their eyes rolling back. Staying meant certain death.

"Run!" Wang Dagou decided. Grabbing Li Zitao, he bolted toward the factory's iron fence.

"Where are we going?" Li Zitao gasped, barely keeping up. His empty stomach churned as he was dragged along.

"Shut up!" Wang Dagou barked. He stopped near the fence, surveying the high-voltage wires running above it. With a running start, he launched Li Zitao over the fence.

Li Zitao screamed as he sailed through the air and landed hard on the ground, his body aching from the impact. He turned just in time to see Wang Dagou climb a ladder he had found nearby, skillfully navigating the wires before leaping down beside him.

The factory was in chaos. Voices shouted, and someone yelled for a gun.

"Where do we go now?" Li Zitao asked, staring at the dark forest ahead.

"How should I know?" Wang Dagou snapped. He glared at Li Zitao, resentment evident in his eyes.

"Do you have any money?" Wang Dagou asked suddenly, his tone sharp.

Li Zitao hesitated before removing his shoe. From the sole, he pulled out a small wad of crumpled bills. "Twenty dollars," he said meekly.

Snatching the money, Wang Dagou gritted his teeth. "We'll buy guns," he declared, his eyes glinting with determination.

"Guns?" Li Zitao echoed, startled.

"Do you want to survive or not?!" Wang Dagou barked.

They trudged through the forest, Wang Dagou explaining the dangers they faced. "We have no papers, no identities. If the police catch us, we're dead. And prison? Those guys will make you wish you were never born."

Li Zitao nodded, taking in every word. As they ventured further, he asked hesitantly, "Do you know where to get guns?"

"I know a place," Wang Dagou replied, though his voice betrayed his uncertainty. "I just hope they have enough bullets."

In the dangerous underworld of the 1930s, survival meant taking risks. Armed with little more than determination, the pair disappeared into the night, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

This rewritten version sharpens the pacing, enhances the emotional depth of the characters, and strengthens the clarity of events while preserving the original meaning.
