Chapter 156: Chapter 155: Ancient Ruins
Ancient Ruins, Outer Walls
I activate my new ability, Elemental Portal Creation, and step through, emerging at the outer walls of the ruins. These ruins lie deep in the wilderness, far beyond the city, almost touching the border of the neighbouring country, Symkaria.
Elsa, fully geared and ready for action, steps out behind me with a guitar case in her hand. I am wearing my sleek, Black Apex suit, with my disguise still on.
I deliberately chose the location for the portal to be outside the ruins, in a secluded corner, far from any prying eyes. I didn't want to risk alerting the vampires or anyone else inside.
I gaze up at the ruins, sensing something unusual. The clouds above seem to be gathering ominously, and many of my weather abilities are resonating with the strange phenomenon. I shake my head, keeping the unsettling feeling at the back of my mind, deciding to focus on the task at hand.
A silent nod is exchanged between Elsa and me as I activate my other power—Invisibility. Within moments, both of us vanish from sight.
Now that I am certain that Blade is kept here, this mission has shifted from a full-on raid to a focused rescue operation. Stealth is key. Even Elsa, usually all for going in loud, agrees with my decision this time—though, to be fair, she made me promise to start the Vampire Skull Bashing the moment we find Blade.
I had considered using my Telepathy to establish a link with Elsa during the mission, but her Bloodstone interfered, blocking our mental connection. It is fine however, as we both can still stay in touch, me with my Focus gadget and Elsa can use the Bracelet I have given her.
Through my Focus, I assess the tight security perimeter. Armed guards line the outer walls, rifles slung over their shoulders and various weapons strapped to their bodies. Despite the cover of night, they remain alert, many outfitted with thermal gear, their night vision scanning the surroundings with precision.
I can't help but feel grateful to my loving girlfriend Susan. As with my Invisibility active, the guards won't even know we are there. I wrap myself and the translucent to my eyes Elsa in a Psionic Bubble, effortlessly lifting both of us up the wall, bypassing the outer defences with ease.
We glide past the guards silently, moving like shadows, walking by them effortlessly. We were about to accomplish my first stealth mission with a 5 stars completion, when—
BANG! BANG!
The loud shots ring out through the night. Confusion washes over me, and a small knot of worry forms in my stomach. We are already near the Inner Wall, and the shots sound like they are coming from deeper within the ruins.
"We should check it out," I murmur to Elsa, my voice barely more than a whisper. Elsa, already clutching her guitar case, nods in agreement.
We both move swiftly toward the source of the noise, responding faster than the guards could ever hope to. We find ourselves facing a heavy metal door. I push it open quietly but quickly, the hinges barely making a sound.
As Elsa and I step inside, my Clairvoyance flares, and I am instantly alerted to something wrong. In the next moment, I see it—a flicker of light which is almost upon us!
"Duck!" I shout, grabbing Elsa and pulling her down just as something whizzes past, narrowly missing us both.
"Ugh, this is so damn hard to control!" A familiar voice grumbles, the sound drawing my attention.
"You know that's your fault, right? Shut up and let me try again!" I hear the same sound grumble again as Elsa and I scramble to our feet. My eyes widen in surprise as I spot a woman I know very well standing in the corridor ahead, seemingly talking to herself—or was it to her hand? I also spot a Vampire, eyes glowing red and fangs bared, charging towards her from the opposite side.
Before I can warn her, she raises her arm high, and a bright light starts to gather around it. It only takes a second for me to realize: she is holding a broken sword handle. The light is radiating from it, pulsating like a beacon.
"Silver… Strike!" she calls out, her voice sharp with intent. A brilliant beam of silver light shoots from the handle, moving at a terrifying speed. It cuts straight through the vampire, passing through his body in an instant and travelling far. The vampire doesn't even have time to react before he turns to ash and disintegrates, vanishing into the air.
"This is so weird... Do I really have to shout the attack name every time?" the woman mutters, eyeing her hand.
"What the fuck?!" I blurt out in complete shock, my mouth hanging open. For a split second, I wonder if I have somehow been transported into the Zelda universe, or maybe Bleach. This is fucking insane!
"Who is there?!" The woman spins towards us, her eyes widening. She grips a broken sword handle in her right hand and a sleek silver gun in her left.
"Sable... where did you learn Getsuga Tenshō from?" I ask in disbelief, dropping our Invisibility as I realize who stands before me. The woman who just fired that sword beam... is Silver Sable!
"Who the hell are you?" Sable demands, looking between Elsa and me. Her gaze lands on Elsa first, then shifts back to me with even more confusion. "And how do you know my name?"
"Ugh … Sable, it's me!" I call out quickly, waving my hand to dispel my disguise in a smooth gesture.
"Luke? What are you doing here?" Sable's expression shifts from wary to pleasantly surprised as she steps toward me, her silver hair catching the faint glow of the ruin's lights.
"That is exactly the question I wanted to ask you!" I stride forward, meeting her halfway.
"A… mate of yours?" Elsa's voice comes from behind, her words tinged with curiosity as she follows closely.
"Yes," I reply, glancing back at Elsa briefly before turning my focus to Sable. "But seriously, what are you doing in these ruins, Sable? Is this some job for Sable International?" My eyes linger on her for a moment before drifting to the still-glowing silver scar carved into the heavy metal door behind us. "And what the hell was that attack just now?"
"We dodged it by the skin of our teeth," Elsa adds, folding her arms while studying the door.
"It's … complicated," Sable says, her lips curling into a wry smile. She opens her palm, revealing a silver-hued sword hilt resting in her hand.
"This broken sword," she begins, holding it up, "is why I am here. That attack you saw … it was—"
Before she can finish, the metal doors at both ends of the corridor slam open with an ominous clang. Armed figures pour in, their shouts echoing.
"Intruders!"
"Attack them!"
