A Sunless Dream | Shadow Slave Fic

Chapter 61: Clouded Mirrors

Throughout Orion's relatively short life, he had experienced a variety of emotions as well as encountered a variety of people. Through doing so he managed to acquire experiences about the world that far surpassed those of the average man.

He had experienced love, pain, confusion and learning to experience these things had always come as a pleasant surprise to the man, slowly but surely, he felt himself becoming more human.

But there was one emotion he hadn't felt. Unbridled Rage.

Orion slowly made his way throughout Ki Song's castle. Whenever he wasn't with Revel, which was a rare occurrence, he made do by socialising with Revel's mother Ki Song. As they spoke more, Orion developed an extreme sense of reverence as well as familial bonds with the woman.

It was safe to say that she was the closest thing he had to a mother. Continuing his slow pace, he walked past the guards without a care in the world. Not even nodding to acknowledge them, after a while he made his way to the door of Ki Song's chambers.

Moving to knock, he stopped before taking a second to breathe in deeply. There was something deeply wrong that was happening; however, he didn't know exactly what. He knew that there were only a select few threats that could even hope to threaten Ki Song, however his worry didn't diminish as he burst into the room with an anxious expression.

The sight made him sick to his stomach.

There she sat, remaining on a replica of her throne with her head pried from her body. It had been replaced with a mirror as her head laid in her arms. Her body was motionless, not even indicating a fight had occurred. Blood was splattered across the room, including the ceilings as Orion stared at the scene with a blank expression.

He attempted to maintain a facade of indifference; however, his mask quickly broke down as teas began cascading from his face. Roaring for the guards, Orion scanned the room quickly, making sure not to focus on the body of who he considered his mother.

Before he began to sense it, faint traces of essence that seemed too familiar to forget. He already knew the culprit. In one movement, he surged towards Ki Song's body. With a flick of his arm, he crushed the mirror that replaced her head and knelt to look her in the eyes.

Once vibrant and full of life, overpowering life and will which bent the world to a knee. Now had been replaced by the dull colour of eyes which had lost the spark of life. He didn't know what to do, in situations like these his rock was Revel however she wasn't in the immediate vicinity.

'How will I tell her, how will I comfort her, what the hell happened!' he screamed to himself internally. Lifting her body off the floor, Orion pulled her into the shadows before ordering Saint to tend to her body. In the state he was in, he couldn't bear to look at her.

For the first time in a long time, Orion sat in the palace, in a secluded corner where he would not be seen by anyone. And broke down into tears. The grief of Ki Song's death shattered his heart into small splinters as his body convulsed with sadness and grief.

'If I knew this was how it felt, I'd have never become human in the first place. No, I'd do it all over again' he thought to himself between sobs, his sadness for Ki Song's death could never overshadow the love he had for Revel and yet, it hit him hard enough to make him immobile.

After two hours, Orion slowly raised himself to his feet. He knew Revel was on a mission, but he couldn't wait and keep this information from her any longer than he could. Orion's eyes focused as he dove into the shadows, moving as fast as he could to meet Revel.

After twenty minutes of movement, he found Revel battling a great beast. She was struggling, blood pouring down from the side of her head however Orion had no time for that. Appearing from the shadows, he levelled a punch at the great beast that killed it immediately, almost vaporising it's soul shards in the process.

He had his back turned to Revel and no matter how hard he tried his body refused to turn, instead, he allowed his flames to heal Revel entirely as he remained staring at the empty space the great beast left.

Unknown to him, Revel stared at him incredulously "What's going on? What happened?" she asked, this behaviour wasn't usual to him and urgency was clear in her tone. Receiving no answer, Revel paced towards him and grabbed him by the shoulder, pulling him to face her.

Looking into his eyes, she saw his grief-stricken expression as tears cascaded from his eyes. "She's dead." He muttered out, Revel moved to question further, but Orion continued, his tone breaking as he spoke. "Your mother is dead."

The sight he saw broke him even more than Ki Song's body did, Revel's face morphed into a look of disbelief as she stared at him incredulously. "No, you're lying. Tell me you're lying!" Her voice raised more and more as she grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him.

Orion offered no response, slowly tears began to fall from her eyes as her body shook with grief. Not knowing what to do, Orion pulled her into a deep hug as she slowly fell to her knees. Her body convulsing as hot tears poured from her eyes in droves.

Kneeling to meet her, he continued to hold her in a hug without saying a word. He had to be strong for the two of them, tears continued to flow from his eyes as his posture remained perfect. Not betraying the mental anguish he was going through.

After a while, Revel slowly pulled back from the hug. Her eyes flared with rage as she stared at him with a venomous expression. "Who did it?" Orion's flaw didn't even need to build up before he uttered an answer "Mordret, it was that fucker Mordret. I should have killed him when I first met him!"

His voice too flared with anger as he began releasing essence unconsciously. The ground beneath him started to crack as the sky darkened to match his mood, "I will kill that bastard, and I will make it slow and fucking painful. He took my mother from me!"

Revel's anger quickly faded back into sadness, as Orion dragged her into another hug. Careful not to betray his plans to kill Mordret.

Nephis had lived her entire life, hoping and praying for her chance to get revenge upon the Sovereigns who were responsible for all the torment of her life. It had constantly been on her mind every waking moment, even looking at one of them made her sick.

Her period of rest had ended, and with that marked another mission being awarded by Anvil. Although she didn't like it, his missions always promised her a new pathway to advance her strength. Strength she would use to take his life.

As she got closer to Anvil's chambers, the stench of blood became rich in her senses, overwhelming all other lingering aroma's within the castle. The sight of it did not phase Nephis much, Anvil was likely just giving her further reason to end his life.

However, as she pushed open the door to his chambers. She was greeted by a sight she never once could have imagined. Anvil had been crucified, his head taken clean off his body and replaced with a mirror as blood poured like a fountain from the stump.

Blood continued to flow so much so it had almost overwhelmed Nephis shoes as she quickly burnt the stump to cauterize the wound. At the sight, she expected to be overwhelmed with an extreme sense of joy however that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Someone had stolen her vengeance, the lives she had sacrificed, the torture she had undergone, the bonds she had broken. All to attain a goal that had been ripped from her hands without her knowledge or involvement.

It only took moments before the room exploded in flames.
