Abandoned talented woman decides to live a leisurely life with her family

Chapter 19

Then, one day, about three days after my conversation with Father,

Father came into the house with a large man and a young man of average build. I was sitting next to Father, facing them.

I was told to bring the picture book in question, so I assumed they would talk about registering with the merchant’s guild and patents and copyrights for picture books.

Father introduced the two of them to me, who had never met them before.

The large man was Count Reinard Bladenburg. He was an old friend of my father’s, and apparently the man who had helped bring him to this country.

The other is Nikolaus Edgard. He is a young member of the merchant guild who has just started a new trading company. Although he is now a commoner, he is the fourth son of a baron who has ties to Lord Brandenburg. However, rather than live at home and become a burden to his family, he became independent, became a commoner, and started a business.

After the four of them had met, Lord Brandenburg began the speech.

“Balthazar. Your ‘Blue Gem’ has produced something interesting soon after coming to the country?”

Lord Brandenburg looked from me to my father.

“Blue Gem” must be the nickname given to me in my previous country, “Blue Gem of the Baden Family.” I know it sounds a bit self-deprecating, but I was famous as a child genius in that country, and on top of that, I had blue eyes, so Her Majesty the Queen herself started calling me that. Before I knew it, the name had spread widely.

“Yes, my daughter came up with an interesting idea soon after we moved here. However, it would be a waste to keep it locked up in our home, and since it was a new invention, I wanted to see if we could turn it into a business. If it were sold to the public, there would be people who wanted it.”

The person who is asking for it must be Elmer’s tutor, who appeared in the previous story.

As Father explained, Edgard looked at me with interest.

“A new invention, huh…?”

Seeing that Edgard seemed eager to check them out, I arranged the few picture books I had brought with me on the table.

“It’s a book for children. It uses a lot of pictures, so I named it a ‘picture book.’ It’s a toy for children, but at the same time, I made it with the hope that it would help them learn to read and write, starting with reading aloud and then gradually moving on to reading on their own.”

So I handed Edgard a sample of a picture book. The book was short and written in simple sentences so that children could read it themselves once they had finished reading to them.

“A book for children is a totally new idea. But it starts with reading aloud to children, with content they’re likely to like, and then they read the book they like by themselves… Yes, it’s quite interesting. It looks like it will turn the stiff and painful study of reading and writing for children into a fun time!”

Saying this, Edgard’s eyes lit up as if he had become a child himself, as he looked through the sample picture books he had brought with him.

After reading for a while, he seemed satisfied, raised his head and spoke.

“This is the first time I’ve read the story written in this book, but is it something you came up with yourself, Lady Anneliese?”

— Ah. In this world, yes. The story is based on the same picture book from the original world, but…

Although it was painful, I was reincarnated from another world. Even if I explained in earnest that this is the story set in that world, people would probably worry about my mental health.

Although it was painful, I replied that it was my own creation.

“In that case, it would certainly be necessary to apply for a copyright for this story in addition to the patent for the picture book.”

“That’s true. However, since we are ordinary nobles, we don’t have much knowledge about business. So I asked Lord Brandenburg to recommend a good merchant who is knowledgeable about business.”

“Edgard is a good guy. He was originally a nobleman, so he has some connections there. He started off as an apprentice at a trading company, and it’s been five years since he started his own company. He’s a smart guy, and most importantly, he’s young, so he’s flexible in dealing with new things.”

Edgard seemed both humbled and pleased by Lord Brandenburg’s praise.

I didn’t move to this country to become a picture book author. I have a lot of other interests, so there are a lot of things I want to try.

— I won

der if I can just hand this whole project over to Edgard?
