Chapter 19. Marriage? The Car Accident Kind (4)
Within a couple of days, news of Shen Wan’s car accident could no longer be kept secret.
“You silly girl, why didn’t you tell Grandpa about such a serious incident?” Grandfather Shen leaned on his cane, his face full of anger that couldn’t mask the deep concern and love in his eyes.
Shen Wan nearly called out “Grandpa” upon seeing the old man. But now, as an amnesiac, she looked helplessly at Wen Yingling beside her.
Grandfather Shen sensed something was amiss.
Wen Yingling spoke up at the right moment, “Grandfather Shen, Shen Wan has lost her memory.”
“Lost her memory?” Grandfather Shen nearly fainted from anger. Not seeing Lin Ming in the hospital room, he thumped his cane on the floor. “Where’s Lin Ming? How did he protect Wan Wan? Such a big incident and he didn’t even inform me. Does he think I’m a senile old fool who’s useless now?”
Grandfather Shen’s health was poor due to a major surgery a few years back. The original Shen Wan had feared upsetting him with the truth about her relationship with Lin Ming. She hadn’t anticipated that after losing her memory, the entanglement between Wen Yingting and Lin Ming would truly anger Grandfather Shen to the point of collapse.
After a few minutes, Grandfather Shen accepted Shen Wan’s memory loss.
“I’m your grandfather,” Grandfather Shen sat on the edge of the hospital bed. “Wan Wan, where’s Lin Ming? Why hasn’t he come to the hospital to see you?”
Shen Wan looked at Wen Yingling as if asking if this was really her grandfather, nearly causing Grandfather Shen to faint from anger.
“Grandpa.”
Grandfather Shen’s rising anger quickly dissipated, but then he heard Shen Wan complain, “Grandpa, how did I end up marrying a heartless person like Lin Ming?”
Grandfather Shen was so shocked he nearly dropped his cane. What… what had he just heard?
His granddaughter had called Lin Ming a heartless creature right to his face!
He put on a serious expression. “Wan Wan, tell Grandpa, what did Lin Ming do?”
“Grandpa, Lin Ming only showed up several days after my car accident,” Shen Wan said angrily, her good fist clenched tight. “As soon as he arrived, he wanted a divorce. Grandpa, Lin Ming and I clearly have no feelings for each other. Why did I marry him? Was it an arranged marriage for family interests?”
“Bah! What nonsense about an interest-based marriage?” Grandfather Shen was furious. “You foolish girl were the one desperate to marry him. You never listened to a word I said. Who says there’s no affection?”
“Lin Ming said so,” Shen Wan replied, looking pitiful. “I really don’t feel any affection. I agreed to divorce once I’ve recovered.”
Grandfather Shen fell into deep thought, his gaze fixed on Shen Wan’s face. Now he was truly certain the girl had lost her memory. If she hadn’t really lost her memory, how could she agree to divorce Lin Ming? He wasn’t angry about the divorce at all. He was only angry that Lin Ming hadn’t informed him about Wan Wan’s accident after so many days. He was also a bit scared—given Lin Ming’s attitude, would he even be notified if Wan Wan died one day?
“Wan Wan, are you really decided on divorcing Lin Ming?”
Shen Wan didn’t hesitate. “Yes, Grandpa. That Lin Ming looks like a cold-hearted, ungrateful person. Even if we had feelings before, I think I must have been blind to marry him. I suspect my married life wasn’t happy at all.”
Wen Yingling’s lips curled slightly. This second personality was quite pleasing to the eye.
She somewhat hoped the first personality would never reappear. That foolish woman was so annoying to look at.
After repeatedly confirming that Shen Wan wouldn’t change her mind, Grandfather Shen sighed, “I told you long ago that Lin Ming wasn’t a good man, but you insisted on marrying him. See? Now you’ve been in an accident, and he’s nowhere to be seen for days. He only comes to see you once after several days, and immediately asks for a divorce. You only learn from your mistakes. Fine, let’s divorce then. We’ll discuss this when the Lin family comes.”
“Wait, no.”
Grandfather Shen’s face turned cold. “Having second thoughts?”
Disappointment filled his eyes. Even with memory loss, was his foolish granddaughter still unable to forget Lin Ming? What was so good about that boy? He had never felt that Lin Ming liked his precious granddaughter. He even wore a gloomy face at their wedding. If it weren’t for Wan Wan’s feelings, he would have cracked that boy’s skull with his cane long ago.
“No, Grandpa, if you bring up the divorce, we’ll lose the upper hand. He’s the one who wants a divorce, so he should be the one to propose it. I’m waiting to get a share of his money. I wasted two years of my youth marrying him. I had a car accident, and he didn’t care at all. He came just to ask for a divorce. For such a heartless beast, shouldn’t I take a large portion of his assets in the divorce?”
What? What did his granddaughter just say?
Grandfather Shen hadn’t quite processed it. He watched as Shen Wan held her phone with one hand, reading from it. “Grandpa, I’ve been researching online these past couple of days. We didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement, so I have the right to take his money. He looked so arrogant that day, thinking he was so cool. I was really upset.”
Wen Yingling thought: The second personality is overacting a bit. She remembered it was after waking up that Shen Wan mentioned the prenuptial agreement.
Wen Yingling began to suspect that this second personality might have wanted a divorce for a long time, but the primary personality had been in control of the body, forcing it to scheme in secret. The car accident had severely traumatized the primary personality, giving this second personality, which had always been dissatisfied with Lin Ming, an opportunity.
This explanation would account for why Shen Wan seemed to despise Lin Ming at first sight, eager to divorce him and take his money.
“Grandpa, do you think I shouldn’t take money from that scumbag Lin Ming?”
Grandfather Shen had caught up now, and for some reason, he felt a bit happy. Had the car accident knocked some sense into his precious granddaughter’s head? She even knew to claim Lin Ming’s assets now. That was progress.
“You should!” Grandfather Shen narrowed his eyes. “You mean we should wait three months for Lin Ming to bring it up himself, and then we’ll take his money?”
Seeing her excited grandfather, Shen Wan weakly communicated with 188, “188, this grandfather seems a bit off. Has he been possessed? He’s so happy about taking money.”
[188: “You’ve forgotten that Grandfather Shen becomes a major villain in the future, the kind who makes Lin Ming suffer terribly. He really hates Lin Ming. If it weren’t for the original host’s sake, Lin Ming would have been in a much worse situation. In the end, Grandfather Shen wasn’t defeated by Lin Ming, but by his only granddaughter. Unable to bear seeing her heartbroken over Lin Ming, he chose to let them go and donated most of his assets. He must have been in despair.”]
“Poor old man.”
[188: “Yeah, it’s quite pitiful. He only had one relative in his whole life, and she kept causing him trouble. If you ask me, with the original host being so dim-witted, he should have just cut ties.”]
Receiving Shen Wan’s confirmation, Grandfather Shen’s gaze grew increasingly gentle. Finally, he sighed, “If you had always been this clever, girl, Grandpa would have had far fewer worries.” He could have handed over the company to her management earlier without fear of the Lin family taking advantage.
“Grandpa, when the Lin family is present, don’t mention the divorce. Let Lin Ming bring it up himself. What do you think?”
“Mm, I’ll listen to you this time.” Grandfather Shen rubbed his cane, then told Shen Wan he had matters to attend to and would come back in the afternoon. In reality, after leaving the hospital room, he went to find Shen Wan’s doctor.
The doctor thought he had come to inquire about Shen Wan’s condition and only told him not to worry, that Shen Wan’s recovery ability was very strong and she should be fully recovered in about three months.
Unexpectedly, Grandfather Shen looked around and then asked, “Doctor, is my granddaughter’s memory loss permanent or temporary?”
“Well, it should be temporary, but with memory loss, there are many uncertainties.”
Grandfather Shen looked disappointed, prompting the doctor to quickly reassure him, “Don’t worry, sir. Your granddaughter’s recovery ability is good. She’ll remember everything sooner or later.”
“Thank you, doctor.”
Grandfather Shen, leaning on his cane and supported by his assistant, muttered softly as he reached the door, “I thought it might be permanent. Hopefully she won’t remember. That foolish granddaughter gives me a headache. Now with her memory loss, she’s not bad—smart and able to protect herself. There’s hope for her to inherit my Shen Corporation.”
The doctor who accidentally overheard: “……” He must have misheard.
The assistant: “……” Mr. Shen’s thoughts were always unique. Even at twenty-something, he couldn’t keep up.
In the afternoon, the Lin family arrived, full of concern and well-wishes. Grandfather Shen was also present, looking particularly cold towards Lin Ming. Nobody paid much attention, assuming he was just angry at Lin Ming. Lin Ming’s father played the role of peacemaker.
Finally, the day of Shen Wan’s discharge arrived. Both families expressed their intention to take Shen Wan home. The Lin family believed that as Shen Wan was now part of their family, she should return to the Lin household. Grandfather Shen insisted that his precious amnesiac granddaughter should return to the home where she grew up.
As both sides argued, Shen Wan sat in her wheelchair and tugged on the sleeve of Wen Yingling, who stood to the side with her arms crossed, looking completely disinterested. She finally grasped Wen Yingling’s wrist.
“Yingling, can I go home with you?”
“Wan Wan?” Both families called out in unison, utterly confused as to why she wanted to go with Wen Yingling.
Shen Wan’s expression was innocent. “These past days, Yingling is the only one I’ve seen every day. From the moment I woke up, the first person I saw was Yingling. She’s the one who fed me. I’m really sorry, but I’m a bit afraid of this unfamiliar world. Only when Yingling is around do I feel somewhat safe.”
188: His host was such a drama queen.
A bit afraid of this unfamiliar world? That was laughable.
Seeing through it but not exposing it, he was his host’s system and couldn’t reveal her act.
“Yingling, can I go home with you?”
Wen Yingling frowned slightly, looking at the small hand grasping her wrist. She remained silent, observing Shen Wan’s pitiful act. She seriously doubted Shen Wan’s claim about fearing this unfamiliar world. How had she not noticed Shen Wan’s fear? Instead, she had spent her days online shopping with Lin Ming’s credit card and playing games one-handed. She clearly found this world very interesting.
“Yingling, please help Grandfather Shen take care of Wan Wan for a while, would you?”
Grandfather Shen thought that since Wen Yingling was a girl, it would be fine for Shen Wan to stay with her temporarily. There wouldn’t be any problems.
He felt at ease!
Yingling was a good kid—smart and calm. It wouldn’t be bad for Wan Wan to learn a thing or two from her.
