Chapter 6: She's Off-Limits.
The human female that has been curtaining behind him all week long, catch her!" The man with the cloth over his mouth snapped at the other who was pacing ahead of him. "Kill her too!" He reached out in a swiping motion, wishing he had access to his beloved hand-scythes. Alas, he could only make the motion in frustration several times as he hissed in regret.
"Stop running, woman!" The other screamed, holding his head for good measure while he doubled down on his speed, gaining on Ava who was just about to be recieved on the other side,
His eyes had been locked on the girl's back, and his focus tunneled on reaching her as quickly as he could, so when that back disappeared and the sight of her was replaced by a foot he froze mid-stride. "Huh-"
*WHAM*
Kai's heel created a scrunching noise as it collided into his face sending his head flying out of his grasp and slamming into the chest of his partner before hitting the ground and rolling off the bridge, right into the back of a passing garbage truck while his body staggered and then fell still on its back, he screamed and cursed.
His true body by the distance he could tell was nearly a mile away, he would have to journey all the way back since possession of a living host would trigger several alarms and cause them unneeded attention, considering what their plans were; Fatal attention.
His next best bet was one of the people he had just killed on the other side of the bridge.
Ava had come to a halt after he had jumped over her head, but seeing a head suddenly go flying left her completely flat-footed and immobile.
"Ava, are you okay?" Kai spun when the other stopped, staring over the railings of the bridge at the truck shocked and listening to his partner rage and spit blasphemous insults at Kai for removing his head while he was taken away.
"His head-"
"Ava." Kai snapped at her, dragging her to her feet and pushing her away from the other, standing between them when the corpse slowly panned its head in their direction, growling. "Listen to me very carefully," Kai started backing away, knowing that he wouldn't be able to repeat what he had just done.
"I am going to run to the left, pretend to go right and hide under the bridge then come back here after he has followed me away, go home, straight home, as fast as you can, don't stop for anything not even your granny's ghost, understand?" Kai ordered her, but the girl was shaking and unable to move, let alone run away.
"H-his head-"
"Listen to me damnit!" Kai snapped at her once more, backing up and pressing his hand against her abdomen. "Just like you did a moment ago, Ava, you have to run, and don't stop until you feel like there is nothing following you, got it!?" He tapped her rapidly in an attempt to wake her from her stupor, but she was still stiff against his back too frightened to move.
"Maybe involving myself with her was a mistake after all, this idiot... I don't plan on dying because you're shitting yourself over something as trivial as a head flying!" He thought to himself, slowly turning until both her and the corpse on the bridge were in his peripherals.
"Ava, listen to me, they have killed over a dozen people on their way here already, if you don't move your ass now I'm gonna start running and I won't look back; I won't save you this time, do you hear me?"
"But his-"
"Forget about everything else, they are already corpses, if you don't move you are gonna join them!" He whispered harshly at her. "Don't be a pain in my side, I'm already doing enough by standing here when I have been running all evening, nothing else matters, nobody else matters, they will a hundred percent kill you if you do not move," Kai warned her one last time.
"Now, repeat what I said earlier."
"Run, to the left... no, to the right... run right and hide under the bridge, when you and him are gone, run home and don't stop for anything, not even my dead grandma," She repeated, shakily whispering each word and he smiled in himself, maybe there was hope for her yet, she was able to remember that even though she couldn't move a muscle and was frozen in fear.
"Kai, what are they?" She asked taking her first step in retreat and he huffed, giving the corpse his full attention once more when he felt the pressure on his back disappear.
"I'm sorting out some personal stuff with a few friends from beyond the grave, don't dawdle, do as I say and get out of here!" He snapped once more, spinning and running off while she bolted in the opposite direction.
The loud drumming of feet hitting the ground behind him signified the acceleration of his pursuer, and he was ready to give it his all and run as far and as fast as he could, but after just a few steps Kai glanced behind himself when he found the next footstep off the bridge sounding too faint for something coming in his direction.
"You."
"Fucking."
"Asshole!"
Kai spun, seeing the corpse turn and run in the direction that Ava had darted off in. "Fucking hell!" He ground his teeth in agitation, staring as the bloodied body ran with the arms flailing and the legs wonkily swinging one after the other.
"He can harm these bodies, I failed to anticipate his strength being several times that of his fellow human, even if it was tethered by a thin membrane of skin that kick was not supposed to send a head flying."
"I'll lure him in with the girl and kill him when he surrenders- Guuraghaaa!!" He skipped forward by several steps and crashed at Ava's feet bouncing off the ground and colliding with a tree when Kai came charging in with another kick, saving her after she had frozen once more after seeing the tanktop hiding his mouthless face fall off from his frantic run while he was chasing her.
"This girl... is off limits!" Kai declared, coming to a halt and balling his fist while the girl before him stared at his grey eyes silhouetted by the twilight behind him, he huffed and sucked in a deep breath, baring his teeth once more and then charging in for an attack.
