Chapter 3: A Bloody Plot About a Wealthy Family
When she heard someone knocking on the door, Yun Zijin had just finished moving her things.
Who would come to see her at this time?
Yun Zijin frowned slightly, feeling uneasy.
But the knocking was persistent, as if the visitor wouldn't give up until she opened the door. The knocks came every so often, three times in a row.
Yun Zijin picked up a baseball bat and looked outside through the peephole. All she could see was part of a person—his collarbone. She couldn't see his face through the peephole.
Yun Zijin stepped away from the door, took out her cell phone, and called the community security guard.
"Uncle, someone's knocking at my door but not saying anything. Can you bring a few people and come check it out?"
On the other end of the line, the security guard responded quickly and then hung up to call for backup.
Since the other party wasn't pounding aggressively, Yun Zijin initially thought he might not have bad intentions. Still, one must remain cautious, so she asked the security guard to come armed.
About ten minutes later, she heard the security guard's voice outside:
"Who are you? What are you doing here?"
Hearing the security guard's voice for the first time, Yun Zijin thought it sounded very reassuring.
"I'm Xia Zhiyun, the general manager of the Xia Group, and I'm here to look for someone," a man's voice replied.
"Who are you looking for, and what's the matter?"
"Yun Zijin. It's a private matter."
When the security guard heard that it was private, he frowned and decided it would be better to let Yun Zijin handle it herself.
"Girl Zijin, your uncle is outside the door, and I have several security guards with me. It's safe. You can come out to see what's going on."
Xia Zhiyun: So she didn't open the door because she thought he was a bad guy?
Now that acquaintances were present, Yun Zijin felt less afraid. She took her bag, opened the door, and walked out alone, not letting anyone inside her apartment.
"What's the matter? Just say it."
"I heard that Miss Yun is an orphan?" asked Xia Zhiyun.
Yun Zijin frowned. What did her background have to do with him?
"Say what you want directly. Don't beat around the bush."
"Yes, don't give any hypocritical nonsense," the security guard chimed in.
"I suspect that you are my biological sister," Xia Zhiyun said. "So... could you please cooperate and take a paternity test with me?"
His words made Yun Zijin look up at him. "It's been twenty-one years. There's no need."
As far back as she could remember, she had lived in the orphanage. When she was young, she longed for her parents to find her, but as she grew older, she stopped expecting it. Parents or not, the most important thing was that she lived happily now.
"I know you've been donating at least 2,000 yuan a month to your orphanage," said Xia Zhiyun. "But that must make your life very difficult. After paying for rent and utilities, not much is left each month.
The Xia family is one of the most prominent wealthy families in the capital. If the paternity test proves you're my biological sister, you'd be the Xia family's daughter, and your monthly pocket money alone would be enough to support all the orphanage's expenses.
Don't you think this is worthwhile?"
If this had been before she met Suibianhua, she might have been tempted. But now, all she had to do was open her phone and see the four million yuan balance. She no longer felt enticed.
"Why do you suspect I'm your biological sister?" Yun Zijin asked. There must be a reason for his doubts.
"My sister... the one currently living with the Xia family, had a car accident and needed a blood transfusion, but..." Xia Zhiyun trailed off, implying that the blood test revealed she wasn't actually related to them.
Yun Zijin didn't need him to finish. A blood test showed their supposed sister wasn't a match, leading them to discover she wasn't the real daughter. Ah, a typical case of a wealthy family's scandal: the real daughter replaced, a 'cat for a prince' drama. How clichéd!
"And then you found me?" asked Yun Zijin.
Xia Zhiyun nodded.
The security guard and his companions were also stunned. This was quite the revelation.
"I can cooperate with the paternity test," said Yun Zijin calmly, "but let me make it clear: I have no intention of returning to the Xia family."
She could already imagine how complicated things were. The Xia family's waters ran deep. Since a vicious plot like swapping the rightful daughter occurred, she wanted no part of it.
Xia Zhiyun's eyes lit up when he heard that she was willing to do the test. The rest could be discussed later, once the test confirmed their relationship.
"Girl Zijin, if everything's fine, we'll head out now," said the security guard. Realizing this was a family matter, he no longer worried about her safety.
"Okay, no problem. Sorry for bothering you, Uncle. I'll treat you to a drink next time!"
"You're too polite, girl. Uncle will be waiting for your good wine! We're going now. Call me if you need anything."
Seeing how well Yun Zijin got along with the security guards made Xia Zhiyun feel sorry for her. As the Xia family's real daughter, she should never have needed to worry about these kinds of interpersonal relationships. She should have only considered her own happiness.
But look at her now: dressed in cheap clothes, with no manicures or luxury items. The differences in their upbringings were stark.
"Please don't stare at me like that. It's giving me goosebumps," said Yun Zijin. "When will we do the paternity test? I need to check my schedule. I work Monday through Friday."
Although she had money now, she didn't plan to quit her job just yet. The company atmosphere was good, and she wanted to stay a bit longer.
"If you're free now, we can do it immediately. I'll take you home in the evening," Xia Zhiyun said.
"That's fine. Which hospital are we going to?"
"Kant Hospital, under the Xia family."
Kant Hospital—the private one that charged sky-high fees. She'd heard that their best VIP ward cost 100,000 yuan a night. But since he was asking her to do a paternity test, presumably he'd pay. She didn't say anything more.
It wasn't until they reached the entrance of Kant Hospital that the two finally broke their silence.
"We're here," said Xia Zhiyun.
Yun Zijin got out of the car on her own. Looking at the hospital's luxurious décor, she sighed. The Xia family's hospital was truly in a league of its own, far more opulent than any public hospital.
Xia Zhiyun had made arrangements in advance. As they entered, a doctor in a white coat and mask greeted them, "Let's go to the identification department."
Xia's father, Xia Zhengguang, was already waiting there.
When he saw Yun Zijin, Xia Zhengguang's eyes showed a flash of shock. She looked so much like the old lady (the family matriarch).
"Hello, I'm Xia Zhengguang, your..."
"Hello, Uncle," said Yun Zijin, cutting him off before he could say anything more personal.
Her three words left him momentarily speechless.
"DNA identification can be done using blood, hair, or oral mucosal cells. Which one would you choose?" asked the doctor.
