Chapter 6: | 6 | Addressing the Pack
Azraiel has just finished his meeting with Kira. He knew she was not satisfied with the information but it was necessary to do so. He didn't tell her about his human. It's not that he didn't trust her, but he couldn't take any risk with her safety. He just asked Kira to increase the security and discussed their other plans regarding the training of the wolves.
His wolf has been constantly scratching at him to do something, anything. His mate was lying unconscious and there was nothing he could do. He thought about asking a witch for help but he knew better than to trust their species with such information.
He decided to take shower before the pack meeting. He knew his pack members would be confused as hell but they would obey him. He took a shower and left for the packhouse. A few wolves were already gathered in the hall. Azraiel could feel their anticipation. They were dying to know what this was all about. He could hear them iterate the questions to each other. He tried to sense panic or fear amongst them but found none. His Luna was unconscious but she still was doing her damn job. Instead of panic at the news of a human invading their home, they were just confused.
Within a few minutes, the whole hall was filled with his pack members. Azraiel walked slowly towards the podium in front of the right wall. All the murmuring stopped when he stepped up on the podium.
"Good evening everyone. I am sure you all have already heard about the human girl found unconscious near our pack borders. She has been bitten by a wolf. As of now, we don't know how she came near our borders but rest assured you all are safe. She is under the care of our pack doctors and they believe there are high chances of her completing the shift." Azraiel's voice boomed in the hall. He gave them some time to process the information. He could hear the murmuring about this news.
"If this happens then she'll become the only turned werewolf alive in the entire world and our pack would be the first to witness such a miracle. However, this might pose a threat to our pack. Our enemies might want to kill her and attack our pack at the same time. Hence, to avoid such circumstances, I have decided that no one and absolutely no one will talk about the human girl to anyone outside the pack. Anyone who leaks any information about her would be considered to have disobeyed the Alpha's Order and punished accordingly. No one outside this pack knows about her. So I'll know if anyone disobeys my orders.
Any questions?"
Azraiel couldn't tell them about their Luna and it made him feel sad to do so. They deserved to know their Luna. They have been waiting for the past 11 years, but it was all for her safety. He affirmed.
He knew they were not satisfied. The elders especially would definitely corner him after the meeting to question him. The elders were the oldest wolves alive in the pack. They were respected because they have lived so long and have the experience of dealing with the toughest situations.
After giving some general instructions, Azraiel dismissed the pack meeting. He was talking to the warriors when he noticed Sheeba Saha, one of the elders walking towards him. She was a feisty old lady who never compromised with the safety of the pack. Azraiel knew she would have dozens of questions about this event. He politely greeted her and asked her to continue walking. He sighed silently. This was going to be a long night.
*********
Dr. Humphrey was sitting in her office mulling over the meeting. She knew the threat that the human girl posed, but she couldn't help but pray to the Moon Goddess to keep her alive. That girl was sure a fighter. Despite being bitten so cruelly; she had managed to stay alive for such a long time. Dr. Humphrey wanted to believe that she was human; all her medical examinations suggested so, but there was this tiny teensy voice inside her that wanted to defy all medical explanations.
Her wolf especially was of the firm belief that the human girl would live and live long at that. Dr. Humphrey was confused about her wolf's behavior. Her wolf was acting as if she knew the human, yet she was so damn sure that she had never seen her. The familiarity and ease that she felt around the human said otherwise.
The sound of her cell phone beeping broke her out of her dilemma. It was nurse Pektas, the young girl appointed to take care of the human.
"Yes?"
Dr. Humphrey's eyes went wide like saucers upon hearing the news.
"I am coming. Don't let anyone in." She hurriedly put on her coat and rushed to the patient's room.
**********
Azraiel was walking towards his house after the meeting with elders when his phone beeped. It was Dr. Humphrey. His heart skipped a beat at the thought of something bad happening to his mate. He gulped and with shaking fingers accepted the call.
"What happened?" His voice sounded strange to his own ears.
"She is showing signs of recovery, Alpha. You should come here." Dr. Humphrey informed him.
"I am coming." He turned back and started sprinting towards the medical wing. His mate could live. No scratch that. He needed to be positive. He needed to believe that his Moon Goddess had a purpose for him. He needed to believe that there was a reason he met his mate under these circumstances. What those reasons were, he had no idea, but he would do everything to keep her in his life. His mate would live...and long at that....with him and his children. Yes, he will do anything to keep her alive.
Azraiel ignored the warriors and went straight inside her room. Dr. Humphrey was standing beside her bed. A nurse was checking her vitals and noting something down on a writing pad. At the sound of his footsteps, both of them turned around and bowed their heads slightly. He responded with a curt nod. Dr. Humphrey looked at the nurse and jerked her head towards the door. The nurse left immediately.
Azraiel walked slowly towards his mate. She was still unconscious but she definitely looked better. There was some color in her cheeks but her leg still looked the same. The sight of his mate left him & his wolf transfixed.
"She will wake up soon." Azraiel jerked his head to the side to see Dr. Humphrey carefully observing him. He almost forgot she was in the same room.
"What happened? Is she okay?" His words were rushed. He was afraid that Dr. Humphrey would see right through him.
"She is showing signs of recovery, Alpha. Her vitals have improved a lot since morning. She even moved her hand a while ago. I believe she will wake up within the next 12 hours. I don't know how it is possible, but all her test reports show signs of speedy improvement." Dr. Humphrey couldn't contain the smile in her voice. Yes, please moon Goddess let her live.
Azraiel was having a hard time controlling his excitement. Mate would wake up soon. His wolf wanted to shift and cuddle up to his mate. He let out a quiet sigh and looked at Dr. Humphrey with a small smile. "That's great news. Thank you...thank you so much. If it's alright with you, I'd like to stay here and wait for her to wake up. I want to be the first one to talk to her, of course only after you perform all the tests and checkups.” He added hurriedly.
Dr. Humphrey understood him. She could see everything clearly now. Why did she feel at ease around the human? The reason behind her eagerness to save her life was all clear now. It was written all over her Alpha's face, even when he was trying so damn hard to hide it.
He found her. They found her. Their Luna has arrived.
She nodded and gave him a bright smile and left the room. On her way back she instructed the warriors to not disturb the Alpha and be on guard the whole night. Her Alpha deserved this moment and every other that was going to come his way. His happiness was long overdue.
