Chapter 16: MY MATE HAS A WORK HUSBAND?
RAIN
Having Liam with me, and touching him made me forget about him.
Having someone to look at me like I am his whole world reminded me I am with Liam now. It grounded me and I know I should feel awful for using him, using his body and the lust we have for each other to forget but I don't.
Tonight is the first full moon with Liam as my mate.
It is also our anniversary, since we met a month ago, on a night like tonight. Who could have known my life would look so differently then, but still carrying the sins of the past?
Liam went out to prepare for tonight, as I eat breakfast, holed up in the room. I don't get out without him.
He doesn't lock me up anymore, but I haven't had an urge to go and socialize with the pack members. I know I should but it fills me with dread, it doesn't matter if they are smiling and inviting.
I have only met the chef, the woman who is like a mother to Liam, and Reece, Liam's brother and beta. Even him I have seen once.
I need to socialize and know people, I certainly can't be up in the tower Luna, a mate to their alpha.
Fuck.
It was one thing accepting to be a mate to Liam, but I didn't even consider or think about the responsibilities that come with being his mate.
I am lacking in that department, by a good measure. What the fuck should I do?
What I know is that effort makes it a little better. Yes, I should make an effort because I am not willing to give up Liam. He comes with a lot of responsibilities, and even if he hasn't asked me, letting me take my time, his pack members should know I am not completely useless.
I shower and sit on my dresser, and I stare at my reflection. This month has been kind, my cheeks are not hollow, my complexion is fair, and I look healthy enough. My hair has grown but not much, the bangs are almost covering my eyes. I need a haircut.
I pinch my cheeks a little to bring color to my face and then lick my lips. I look fine. This is going to pass.
Deciding to wear a white shirt and black jeans, I slip out of the door, looking around. I probably look like someone who is sneaking out.
I don't think running into anyone so soon is going to make me feel comfortable. I think getting myself used to the hall, the house, and the silence is a good start.
"Hi!"
I jump, my heart hammering out of my ribcage.
Reece looks at me apologetically, clearly not meaning to startle me.
"uhm, hi," I wave a little feeling and probably looking sheepish.
"I saw you wandering and I thought I should say hi," he smiles then scratches his head. "Well, and probably give you directions?"
"Oh yeah," I smile a little. "Directions would be good."
An uncomfortable silence between us.
"So where do you want to go? I can take you there …"
"No, no! I mean yes, directions will be better. I am looking for Liam," I shift on my feet.
"I left King in his office, the 10th floor. The lift is over there," Reece points and I nod.
"Oh okay, thank you," I smile and start heading towards the lift.
"We haven't gotten to know each other, but I would love to know you more," Reece says and I stop, turning to look at him. "You are now family and I suppose that means you are my new brother now."
"I suppose we are," I nod and he looks pleased with my response.
"So, dinner? Liam can invite a other few pack members to welcome you properly. It will be comfortable with people closest to us. Nothing with pressure," he offers and I nod.
"That sounds great, thank you."
He smiles and I wave goodbye as I head to the lift.
The descent takes a minute and soon the doors open to the 10th floor. There is a foyer, and people walking around. Pack members. This seems to be the official business floor of the pack.
Plastering a smile and smoothing my palms on the jeans, I walk to the receptionist who is typing away. She is beautiful, blonde-haired and an omega as well.
"Hi, how can I help you today?" she asks without looking up.
"Hi, I am looking for Liam's office. I was told it would be this floor but I don't know which office," I chuckle as I look around. "There are too many."
I hadn't paid attention on the day that he brought me down here to meet up with Dante. I was too anxious and nervous to even know how to breathe properly.
"You mean alpha Kingsley," she stops to look at me with a sharp gaze.
"My mistake," I smile as I wait for her to point me to the way.
"Who are you to call the alpha by his first name? That's very disrespectful," she goes ahead and sniffs me and then narrows her eyes at me.
"Well, I … uhm," I don't know why the word mate gets stuck in my throat.
"I don't have the whole day, if you are another one of his one-night stands, I will be sure to tell him and then send a gift basket."
Her ignorance makes me itch but her words stop me dead cold. Another one of his one-night stands?
"I am not-"
"Yes, you are not one fuck and I am sure you are in love by now but I have seen it way too many times. He is a very powerful alpha and single. But he is also busy and has left me to handle you lot," she emphasizes the last word and snaps her eyes at me.
"I am his mate," I finally squeeze the word out, a smile still plastered on my lips.
"Oh," she freezes and I see the sudden change in her attitude. I see how she regrets her words and actions. The apologies are forming in her mind before streaming through her lips.
"I will stop you before you go on," I stop her before she utters her words. "I will ignore what just happened and term it as you being diligent in your work, no hard feelings," I shrug, keeping it casual and light.
Her shoulders sag in relief and then smiles. "I am sorry, I had the rumors but I didn't know …" her eyes take me in with a full renowned interest. I see the moment she registers I am a weak omega and the judgment begins all over again.
I don't have the whole day to analyze so I lean on the high reception desk, shaped like an oval. "So where is his office?"
"I am afraid he is in a meeting right now, but I can tell him you are here," she offers but I shake my head no.
"Point me the way I will wait outside."
The door to his office is slightly ajar, and when the receptionist goes back to her desk, I can't help but peek in.
He seems to be in a good mood, a sight I have not seen him in. Someone is standing next to him and they seem to be laughing at something the mysterious man says, the man even lightly punching Liam on the arm.
Playfully.
They are playful and he seems happy. I have never seen him this comfortable let alone in such a light mood.
The man whispers something in his ear and Liam leans away, keeping a distance but when he turns, he sees me. I smile as I wave and I swear I see shock before it fades into surprise.
"Rain? I didn't expect you," he ushers me in and I get inside the huge office.
"It's okay, I can come back if you are busy. Your receptionist told me you were in a meeting," I smile, rubbing my palms on the jeans.
"My meeting has just concluded, I am just chatting away," he waves an offer to the mysterious guy who turns to face me.
When my eyes collide, I could swear I see the challenge there but it could be me being an omega in front of the beta standing in front of me. Tall, well-built, and fair-skinned. Combined with his white hair, he looks very beautiful and elegant.
"This is one of the pack members, Will. Will, this is my mate, Rain," Liam introduces us and Will extends his hand towards me.
"Nice to finally meet you, rain," the words are soft-spoken but the body language says otherwise, as he leans towards Liam, with a familiarity.
Suddenly, I wonder if I have been copped up for a long time in the penthouse and if I could be misunderstanding the intentions of the man in front of me.
