Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Irrefutable
Although Wang Fugui was saying these things, his body had already slid into Jonas's car.
Jonas took the driver's seat and buckled up, his tone filled with dissatisfaction, "You're being prejudiced, Wang!"
"You, the guy who wants to turn everyone in the world into a drug addict, are the last person who should accuse me."
"Well, that's prejudice too. At least, my neighbors are all kind-hearted. They definitely wouldn't want to hurt you."
"So, where do you live, Attorney Jonas?"
"Newport Beach, south of Los Angeles."
Upon hearing the name, Wang Fugui's expression twisted, "Shut up, Jonas! That's a damn Rich District!"
Xiu Nuo, sitting in the back, casually asked, "What does that mean?"
"The cops in the Rich District all smile at you, wave back when you greet them, and wish you a pleasant day, asking if you need any help. But that same cop, in a poor area, might just pull a gun on you instead."
"Speak English, Wang!"
Wang Fugui repeated it, again.
Clearly, Jonas had a completely different view: "Of course, at least the police in Rich Districts don't have to worry that those well-off folks might pull a gun on them when their hands come out of their pockets to wave."
"Why do I feel like you two are living in two different worlds?" Xiu Nuo couldn't help asking.
"Actually, it is two different worlds." Wang Fugui didn't even bother to argue the issue with Jonas, simply stating, "And, this guy definitely knows it too. He's just playing dumb."
Jonas, driving, laughed it off, "A bit, just a bit. I know only a bit. By the way, Wang, you have a Green Card. Where do you want to get off? You know, I still need to arrange things with the boss."
"Just drop me off anywhere in the city. I can get home by myself."
"I've been wanting to do just that. Do you need me to drop you off at Chinatown?"
"Jonas, you've checked my background, so please, can we cut the act?" Wang Fugui said, then reminded Xiu Nuo, "Boss, he definitely checked you out too, but trust me, he's doomed to find nothing."
"Oh? Why?"
"Because he's a drug dealer." Wang Fugui chuckled, "If his side job wasn't selling flour, perhaps he really could've dug up some of your past from your homeland through his connections. Sadly, the bastard's just a drug dealer!"
Though Xiu Nuo was still unclear on the details, he somewhat understood.
Because he was a drug dealer, in the mysterious Far East, his network was worthless?
A few hours later, Wang Fugui got out of the car, not forgetting to tell Xiu Nuo, "Boss, remember to call me anytime if you need something. It would be even better if it's for work. I am... probably unemployed now."
"Of course."
Wang Fugui left, and Xiu Nuo watched the city outside intently, casually asking, "Where are we going?"
"I've already arranged accommodations for you, boss."
The car started moving again, and Xiu Nuo silently observed the utterly unfamiliar world outside.
He thought he had known enough about this world from his previous experiences, but after really entering this city, Xiu Nuo realized he knew too little.
Skyscrapers stood tall, cars and crowds bustled, unlike anything he had seen in any other country he had passed through.
It seems, aside from Refining Divine Soul, he indeed needed to thoroughly understand what this world was all about.
Being a Cultivator, how come everything still looked so novel, as if he was some country bumpkin.
Gradually, the high-rise buildings disappeared, replaced by neatly scattered single-family homes adorned with various styles of graffiti and more.
For the first time, truly the first time, Xiu Nuo saw genuine smiles on the faces of the people alongside the road.
It was a relaxed and natural smile.
The people he had seen along the way were all deeply troubled, wary, and sensitive, but now, the people in this place were incredibly relaxed.
Finally, the car stopped at the garage door of a two-story house.
Jonas got out of the car, then opened the door, "We're here, boss."
"Is this that beach you were talking about?"
"No, this is Silver Lake, one of my properties. You still need to get acquainted with the United States. Although I really wanted to take you directly to Newport Beach, with its better environment, ninety percent of the population there is white. There's no problem for white people, but believe me, if you appear there right now, you might be questioned by the police."
Xiu Nuo was somewhat puzzled, "Didn't Fugui say that the police there are always smiling?"
"Yes, but you need to have skin color, and if not, let the police get to know you, and right now your status... is an illegal immigrant. People only see that Newport Beach has good public order, but what good public order? It's only that those who are a threat to public order are driven away by the police."
"Interesting," Xiu Nuo followed him out of the car, and a neighbor was trimming the lawn, and when he saw them, he raised his hand to greet, "Joe, what brings you back today? This isn't your usual day."
Jonas responded warmly, "Let me introduce Mr. Bruce Davis, this is my friend, a good friend; this house will belong to him from now on."
After speaking, Jonas explained to Xiu Nuo, "Bruce Davis, well known in the community for his kindness, no need to worry, he, or the people here, are different from those you met on the road."
While Xiu Nuo was still trying to understand the meaning, Bruce came over, reaching out his hand toward Xiu Nuo, "Bruce Davis, welcome to the community, er... excuse some of my face-blindness, I can't really tell where you are from. So, could you tell me, sir? Neon, Korea, someone from the East?"
Xiu Nuo smiled, "Xiu Nuo, someone from the East."
"Oh! There aren't many people from the East here in Silver Lake, being here shows you're truly exceptional, I really like East Asians." Bruce smiled, "I love your food! I have several friends from the East, their food always amazes me. I hate them, you know why?"
"Eh?"
"Because every time I finish a meal at their house, I have to spend several days convincing myself to eat that damn cereal! Hahaha."
Xiu Nuo also smiled, feeling somewhat surprised that this person, he really had no malice, except...
"Alright, Bruce, let's finish up with the introduction and hurry tidy up your lawn, I'll take him inside to look around."
Xiu Nuo was led inside the house by Jonas, who tossed a key to Xiu Nuo, "This house is yours now, boss, don't worry, I'll still cover all the various taxes each year."
Xiu Nuo surveyed the well-decorated house.
"They are different, right?" Jonas suddenly asked.
"A bit, I'm still not quite used to it."
"Nothing to get used to," Jonas shrugged, "The environment and public order in Silver Lake are quite alright. Many artists and young people live here, they are very welcoming to new cultures, and I specifically chose this place. But, don't you like it here, boss?"
"How to put it," Xiu Nuo found a couch to sit on, speaking calmly, "The environment here is nice, tranquil yet vibrant, and the people are nice too, friendly and polite."
"I think you definitely have something else to say, boss. So?"
"So…" Xiu Nuo grinned at Jonas, "It would be better if there was less of that arrogance ingrained in their bones. Coming here proves I'm very exceptional? I can tell he meant no harm, and that's what surprised me the most. He takes it for granted. In his mind, Asians don't deserve to live here, right?"
Jonas's smile instantly became awkward.
"You didn't deny it."
"I can't refute it."
