AOT: I’m Not Okay with How This Ends: Let’s Change That

Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Call of the desperation

After Annie transformed into the Female Titan, chaos erupted. Soldiers near her were sent flying like ragdolls with a single sweep of her massive arm, their screams cut short as they slammed into walls and debris. Blood splattered across the cobblestone streets as her terrifying presence dominated the battlefield.

From a distance, Reiner's desperate voice roared through the commotion. "Annie! Take Bertholdt to the wall!"

Annie's glowing eyes focused on Reiner's call. Without hesitation, she tore apart the steel cage trapping him, her immense fingers effortlessly shredding the metal. Grabbing both Reiner and the still-bound Bertholdt, she clutched them tightly in her palm and began sprinting toward Shiganshina's outer wall.

Reiner, struggling to untie Bertholdt, leaned close and shouted over the deafening sounds of Annie's footsteps. "We need to breach the wall! The entrance—and the wall connecting to the inner district!"

Bertholdt, panicked and shaking, managed to free his mouth from the bindings. "Reiner, stop! The mission is a failure! They know—we've been exposed! We need to fall back!" His voice trembled as he clawed at the ropes, his fear palpable.

Reiner grabbed him by the collar, yanking him upright. "Don't you dare give up! Marcel didn't die for nothing! We have to see this through!" His face was inches from Bertholdt's, his words a furious command.

Bertholdt hesitated, his jaw clenched in frustration before he finally shouted, "Damn it!"

Annie's powerful strides brought them closer to the wall, the ground trembling under her weight. But just as they were within meters of their goal, Captain Mike appeared in a blur of speed. His blade slashed through the tendons of Annie's leg, and the giant toppled forward, crashing into the ground with a thunderous impact.

"Annie, get up! They're catching up!" Reiner yelled, his voice frantic as he clung to her palm.

Steam hissed from Annie's wounded leg as she attempted to rise, but before she could fully recover, Eld Jin and the rest of Levi's squad descended from above. Using their maneuver gear, they launched coordinated attacks, aiming for her nape to force her to retreat. Annie roared in fury, shielding her neck with one hand while pressing Reiner and Bertholdt close to her chest with the other.

Reiner's voice cut through the chaos. "Bertholdt! You have to do it—now!"

Bertholdt froze, fear and determination warring within him as he looked at Reiner's desperate face.

"Throw him, Annie!" Reiner shouted.

Annie hesitated, her titan form trembling under the relentless assault. Finally, with a roar of defiance, she hurled Bertholdt toward the wall with all her strength.

As Bertholdt flew through the air, he bit into his hand, triggering a deafening explosion of lightning. In an instant, the Colossal Titan materialized, its sheer size dwarfing everything around it. The air grew heavy with steam as Bertholdt's transformation scorched the earth below.

The Colossal Titan's enormous foot came down with devastating force, slamming into the wall and creating a massive breach. The impact sent debris and chunks of stone flying, obliterating the Titans that had been standing outside the wall. A moment of eerie silence followed before chaos erupted again—Titans began flooding into the newly created gap, their monstrous forms swarming toward the soldiers defending Shiganshina.

"Titans are inside! Retreat to the second line of defense!" a soldier screamed, his voice barely audible over the roaring of the advancing horde.

Bertholdt, still in his titan form, turned toward the inner wall. His movements were deliberate, each step shaking the ground as he advanced toward Wall Maria.

From within the inner city of Shiganshina, Niikaz's holographic interface flared to life. The countdown in her vision read: 1 hour, 53 minutes until the armour titan power fully absorbed.

Her breath caught in her throat. She knew she didn't have the luxury to absorb another Titan—not in her current state.

She saw the Bertholdt coming towards them and she realised something.

She turned to Levi and Erwin, her voice sharp. "Bertholdt is heading for Wall Maria. If he breaches that too, it's over. We have to stop him now."

Levi's expression was unreadable, his focus razor-sharp. "Erwin, I'll handle him."

Before he could move, an ear-piercing scream tore through the battlefield. Annie's agonized cry echoed through Shiganshina, sending shivers down the spines of soldiers and Titans alike. The roar was so loud it echoed all the way to Eren's position.

Eren's eyes widened in horror. "Wha-what was that?" he stammered, his voice filled with fear.

The sound sent chills down the spines of everyone in earshot. Even the Titans paused momentarily, their heads snapping toward the source of the scream before resuming their frenzied attacks.

Amid the chaos, Niikaz clenched her fists. She knew she was running out of time, but retreat was not an option. The battlefield was a maelstrom of blood, steam, and desperation, and the fate of humanity hung in the balance.
