Chapter 1: Chapter 1: The Ruined City
Chapter 1: The Ruined City
The world had ended five years ago. Not with a bang, but with a strange ripple in the sky. It was a silent event, an unassuming pulse of light that swept over the Earth. Most people didn't feel a thing—until the mutations started.
Nathan Cain crouched low behind a crumbled wall of concrete and steel, his breath shallow as the ground trembled beneath him. The once-bustling city of Eldran was now nothing more than a skeletal wasteland, its towers reduced to jagged teeth on the horizon. Shadows of creatures far too large and unnatural moved in the distance, their guttural growls echoing through the ruins.
Nathan clutched his rusted blade tighter. He'd been scavenging for supplies when he heard the roar—one that didn't belong to any mutant he'd encountered before. For someone like him, who hadn't "awakened," survival meant avoiding trouble, not seeking it.
"Come on, Nathan," he whispered to himself. "Just grab the food stash and get out."
His worn boots crunched against the shattered glass as he stepped into what used to be a grocery store. Shelves were toppled, their contents either stolen or rotted. The faint smell of decay lingered, a reminder of how far humanity had fallen.
Nathan's eyes scanned the dark aisles, his flashlight flickering as he moved. He found a can of beans lodged beneath a pile of debris and quickly shoved it into his backpack. It wasn't much, but it was enough to get by.
Then he heard it—a low, rumbling growl that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
"Damn it," he muttered, gripping his blade. He slowly turned, flashlight trembling in his hand.
A pair of glowing, yellow eyes stared back at him from the shadows. The creature emerged—a mutated beast, its body an amalgamation of sinewy muscle and jagged scales. Its maw dripped with viscous saliva, and its claws scraped against the tiles as it approached.
Nathan took a step back, his mind racing. Running wasn't an option; the thing was too fast. Fighting? With his blade against that? Suicide.
The beast lunged, and Nathan barely managed to roll out of the way. It crashed into the shelves, sending cans and debris flying. Nathan scrambled to his feet, heart pounding as the creature growled, shaking off the rubble.
He ran. His boots pounded against the cracked floor as he bolted out of the store and into the open streets. Behind him, the mutant roared and gave chase.
"Not like this!" he shouted, weaving through the maze of broken cars and fallen streetlights. His lungs burned, his legs screaming for him to stop, but the beast was relentless.
He turned a corner and froze.
Ahead of him stood an ancient ruin—an overgrown building that seemed out of place among the concrete jungle. Its spires reached toward the sky, covered in vines and strange markings that glowed faintly in the darkness.
With no other option, Nathan darted inside. The air was cold and heavy, the faint hum of energy vibrating through the floor. He pressed himself against a wall, trying to steady his breathing as the mutant's growls echoed outside.
The beast prowled the entrance, sniffing the air, but it didn't enter. Instead, it let out a frustrated snarl and retreated into the night.
Nathan sank to the ground, relief washing over him. "What the hell is this place?" he muttered, his flashlight flickering as he scanned the interior.
The room was massive, with walls covered in strange symbols and carvings that seemed to shift when he looked away. At the center stood an altar, atop which rested a glowing artifact—a sphere of swirling, golden light encased in black crystal.
Nathan approached cautiously, his curiosity outweighing his fear. The artifact pulsed, resonating with a strange energy that seemed to call to him.
As he reached out, his hand trembled. "This is probably a bad idea," he said, but his fingers brushed the surface anyway.
The moment he touched it, the world went white.
Pain seared through his body, and he collapsed to the ground, gasping for air. Images flashed in his mind—strange creatures, impossible landscapes, and a voice that whispered:
"You have been chosen. Evolution begins now."
Nathan's vision blurred as he felt something awaken deep within him, a power unlike anything he'd ever known.
When he opened his eyes, the artifact was gone, its energy now coursing through his veins. His hands crackled with faint sparks of light, and he could feel something shifting inside him—a primal force waiting to be unleashed.
The ground trembled again. The beast was back, its growls echoing through the ruin. But this time, Nathan didn't run. He stood, gripping his blade as energy surged through his body.
For the first time in his life, he felt ready to fight.
