Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Wolf One
As much as Zach hated to admit it, he was in rough shape. "I suppose that's true."
Luke extended a hand. "Let me help."
Zach hesitated before accepting the gesture. As he did, a wave of exhaustion overcame him, and his vision blurred.
"Rest now," Luke said gently. "We'll talk more when you're recovered."
Zach nodded weakly before slipping into unconsciousness.
Luke carefully lifted Zach and carried him back toward his den.
"Demon Wolf Chief Instructor," Luke mused to himself with a slight smile. "Has a nice ring to it."
He considered the potential of having someone like Zach help train his wolves, bridging the gap between humans and demons even further.
As the sun began to rise higher in the sky, Luke realized that time was moving swiftly.
"It's getting late," he thought. "Tanya and Zoe should be waking up soon."
"I should return," Luke decided. "There's much to discuss."
He quickened his pace, making his way back to the cave where Tanya and Zoe were resting.
After returning to his territory, Luke casually tossed Zach's unconscious body toward a distinctive Three-Eyed Demon Wolf with unusual features.
"From now on, your name will be Wolf One," Luke declared to the mutant wolf. "And this guy will be your first subordinate."
Wolf One blinked all three of his eyes simultaneously—first in confusion, then with excitement. He let out a triumphant howl.
Being a unique breed without a specific race or name, receiving a title from Luke was a significant honor. Moreover, being entrusted with overseeing the human who had harmed him filled Wolf One with pride.
Even with his limited intelligence, he sensed Luke's strong trust and affection.
"Alright, that's enough howling," Luke said, waving his hand to interrupt Wolf One's exuberant display. "Keep an eye on him. Let me know when he wakes up."
Luke glanced at Zach's prone form. "Also, inform the other wolves that he and the two human women are not to be harmed. Any other humans who invade our territory—deal with them as you see fit."
"Howl!" Wolf One nodded, understanding the orders.
Lower-level demons had an innate hostility toward humans, and Luke needed to keep that in check.
As for other humans, Luke wasn't interested in indiscriminate killing, but he had to protect his domain. The rewards from his system included the Flame Vein, and he anticipated obtaining other elemental veins in the future. If humans discovered these resources, defending them might require drastic measures.
Wolf One raised his head high, gave a final howl, and trotted away with his tail wagging.
"This is a significant day for him," Luke mused. "He has a name and his first subordinate."
He chuckled softly. "If only he didn't act like an overexcited puppy."
Watching Wolf One leave, Luke shook his head. "Without reaching commander level, demons' intelligence is like that of children."
He reaffirmed his decision to have Zach train his wolf pack. "Having a Chief Instructor for the Demon Wolves sounds promising."
As the leader of the Demon Wolf Clan, the Skywing Wolf could command up to ten thousand wolves. The recent attack on Silvercrest City had cost them less than a thousand wolves—not a significant loss in numbers but enough to free up space on one of the mountain peaks.
Luke decided to place the Flame Vein he had received as a reward into this vacant mountain.
From his storage, a wisp of flame containing a violent aura emerged in his hand. Luke hurled it into the heart of the mountain.
Boom!!!
A loud explosion echoed as the peak trembled. A flaming canyon nearly split the entire mountain in two.
Blazing flame energy shot skyward, forming a small mushroom cloud.
"The quality of this Flame Vein is impressive," Luke remarked, slightly surprised. The surrounding temperature was intense, even for him.
He hadn't expected the system's rewarded Flame Vein to be of such high caliber.
"Given time, it might even form a Soul Seed," he thought.
Luke flew toward the center of the Flame Vein. He could clearly see five clusters of flame light within—five Fire Element Spirit Seeds!
Around each Spirit Seed, sparks flickered—fragments of the Spirit Seeds themselves. With the tempering of the flames inside, it was only a matter of time before they fully matured.
Luke hovered beside the largest of the five clusters. "This one is at the level of a Greater Spirit Seed," he noted.
With the temperature levels here, it might advance to a Minor Soul Seed within a month.
Surveying the area, Luke's expression grew thoughtful.
