Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Commander Level Demon
"Hang in there, Raven," he muttered, ramming his claws into the stony ground. Though he scolded Raven a lot, he still held a special connection with the wolf. The change was inescapable, yet the picture of failure loomed heavily in his mind.
As the essence within him began to ignite, Raven's body began to glow. Red flames burst forth from his fur, and his howl grew louder, each becoming more anguished than the last. His muscles bulged, and his physique trembled under the power of the transformation.
Luke frowned as several thoughts simultaneously crossed his mind. A wolf spirit of the Inferno was no ordinary spirit. Hell, since it was a fire-element commander, simply put: it was too much elemental power for a general-class demon like Raven!
"Guess this installation was tougher than I thought," Luke said, squinting his eyes. He saw fragments of the flame spirit seeds scattered around on the vein and hastily scooped up a handful of the glowing shards.
"If the flames get too tough, let's ramp up your resistance," Luke called, before hurling the fragments atop Raven.
The instant they made contact with Raven, the shards became one with the fire on him. The bright firelight dimmed a little as Raven's howls shortened, a testimony to the pouring power stabilizing his transformation.
Raven's body began to change. The once-sleek coat became thick and glimmered almost like metal. The claws grew a bit longer, glowing faintly with a fire hue. Most importantly, the wolf's aura changed: no longer a mere general, Raven now had the air of a Commander-level wolf.
Luke smiled with satisfaction; "You did it."
Raven opened his eyes; the docility was gone, replaced by a surge of confidence. A deep, resonant howl escaped him, echoing across the valley like an announcer's call of increase.
With that, the last remnants of the Inferno Wolf's essence faded into Raven. Luke moved forward, putting a clawed paw on Raven's shoulder.
"Great job, Raven. You are the first of my commanders. Make me proud."
Raven nodded slightly. There was a gleam of respect in his powerful expression as he acknowledged this commendation.
Raven went "Uh-huh!" as he took a gulp of spirit-seed fragments, which sent an additional flare of light through is flaming body with a faint glow as the elemental energy coursed through him.
The primal seeds are not so potent as spirit seeds, but they do lend a fair amount of elemental energy that enhances Raven's fire resistance level. With the Inferno Wolf's body dead and its spirit reduced to the subsequently vengeful wisp, the main battle lay with Raven within himself-him versus the spirit of the Inferno Wolf.
Luke watched, keeping a close eye on trembling Raven. He thought back to a timid one-eyed wolf who had initially joined the Winged Blue Wolf pack. Luke had been around to witness Raven's very first transformation into a bone-spur wolf. Now, in his present status as a Lone Star Wolf, Luke felt a twist of pride while watching Raven ascend.
No matter how silly through sheer stupidity Raven might have appeared, his inner will power was failing now. Raven himself was trembling and cracking bone spurs, but the passion in his eyes was only rising in fierceness. He had made up his mind to win.
Minutes began to stretch out; a triumphant roar echoed through the flame-smothered room.
Luke smiled with satisfaction. "At last," he muttered. Raven had done it.
There were two commander-level creatures among the one-eyed demon wolf clan, and their might thus became apparent. The territory was firmly in their grip. No safe passage by day need be imagined following Raven's ascent.
However, the great transformation was still incomplete. The last stage consisted of molding Raven's brand-new form. Nevertheless, this moment came cushioned with assurance: He had received the essence, blood, and spirit of the Inferno Wolf; hence, the chances of failure were greatly minimized.
Raven, as he walked on, manifested a more enormous and stifling aura. Sand and dust began swirling around him, agitated by the giant beast field that extended from his body. Luke could feel the excruciating pressure of the aura-hefted power: the surest indicator of a commander-level beast. For human mages, such might could disrupt their incantations entirely; for demons, it was a weapon.
Under the weight of this power, Raven's fur began to blaze with a fiery glow. Three bone spurs remained on his back now, sharpened to a razor's edge and glowing like molten steel. Little flames flickered at his feet, like the very ground beneath him recognized his metamorphosis.
