Chapter 32: Chapter 31: Threads of Fate
Tina gasped in horror. "What?! Marissa was captured by that monster?"
Chloe nodded, her face showing the first hint of guilt. "I...I couldn't save her. I just failed."
Tina fainted from shock, falling to her knees. "No, it cannot be happening," she murmured. "Why did it take her? Who did it to stop it?"
"Do you mean the Volcanic Poison Wolf had Marissa in its jaws?" came an all-too-familiar voice as she interrupted.
Both women turned to find Luke standing behind, grim-looking. Landing lightly on the ground, his fiery red wings glowed faintly.
"Are you sure about this?" Luke asked, looking intensely at Chloe.
Chloe hesitated, stunned for Luke's sudden change of tone. She could not ignore the overwhelming intensity in his eyes despite his earlier fury.
"I am sure," she finally said. "The wolf carried her in its mouth when it fled."
Luke's jaw muscled; his hands fisting. "That wolf... and the whole Infernal Wolf Clan... have gone too far."
Luke's wings unfurled before the others could stop him; he flew through the air.
"Wait!" Tina cried after him, but Luke was gone, a fiery streak across the dim sky.
"Tina, does Luke know Marissa?" exclaimed Chloe Carter, a quaver of disbelief in her voice as she watched the fiery silhouette of Luke fade into the horizon.
For a moment, there was common confusion on both Tina Baine's and Chloe's faces. "I… I am not sure," she said finally. "I met him just today. But it looked like he knew her."
Such an idea was ridiculous, yet Luke was acting like a man in a hurry.
"But anyway," Tina said, her voice growing firm, "we cannot stand here and do nothing. Marissa has to be rescued, no matter the price."
Chloe nodded but kept the rest to herself. She had already contacted the high authorities, and they informed her a super-level mage would be dispatched soon to deal with the Volcanic Poison Wolf. But she knew that time was slipping away, and Marissa had only a thread separating life from death.
"If anything should happen to Marissa, we'll recover her… at the very least," started Chloe, though she choked on the words.
"No!" Tina shouted all of a sudden, her hands clenching into fists. "She's not dead, and she won't be! Luke is the fastest of all of us; if anyone can reach her in time, it is him."
Luke cast out sharp eyes across the horizon as his fiery wings went through the thick foliage of the forest. His phone buzzed incessantly, and the vibration jostled his focus severely.
"Damn it!" Luke gritted his teeth, pulling out the device from his pocket. He always knew an impatient call would come, annoyed that it was now from Zach.
"What now?" he whispered while answering the video call.
A concerned Tanya Reed appeared on the screen. "Luke, it's really bad," Tanya said, her voice quivering. "Demons—hundreds of them! They're attacking! Zach and Raven are holding them off, but they can't last long. Where are you?"
Luke's expression hardened with the weight of her words. "I'm on my way," he said curtly, cutting the call and shifting mid-air into his Skywing Wolf form. The speed surged, and a roaring noise chased him through the air as he rushed toward his territory.
At the totem stone, Tanya and Zoe stood side by side, their faces pale.
"Will Luke reach in time?" Zoe murmured so low that it was barely audible.
Tanya glanced at her companion; her hand instinctively rested on her swollen belly. "He will be here," she replied, certainty saturating her voice.
The two women had grown attached to the demon wolves that were a part of their lives. To see the creatures fight and fall was unbearable for them, but they knew they couldn't linger. Tanya pointed toward the path leading deeper into the valley.
"Zoe, we've got to get out of here now. We're not in any position to fight."
