Chapter 4: CH 4
"Survival… Growth… And Main…?"
It was natural to assume that quests existed.
After all, having quests in a game-like system is a common trope.
However, there were only three items on the list.
One was survival, the second was growth, and the third was main.
'Survival and growth are understandable, but….'
Main quest.
It was the most intriguing yet unpredictable aspect.
So, I immediately pressed on the main quest.
━Ding!
[ No main quest has been generated yet. ]
"Is it just a list…?"
I felt a bit deflated, but upon further reflection, having a main quest list meant that such quests would eventually appear.
'Should I prepare for something?'
Despite appearances, I was a 24-year-old man from South Korea.
Growing up, I had played games so much that it would be fair to say they were familiar to me.
Thus, I understood how significant this main quest could be.
But since I couldn't learn anything right now, I moved on to something else.
I promptly pressed on the survival quest.
━Ding!
[ Survival Quest – 1
Create a Base
Purchase a crystal for base creation from the shop and designate your base location.
Current owned bases: 0/1 ]
"A base?"
I expected tasks like collecting water or bringing food, but unexpected content popped up.
"Hmm… Let's move on."
I set aside the survival quest for now and pressed on the growth quest next.
[ Growth Quest – 1
First Step
Obtain a virgin's blood.
Virgin's blood obtained: 0/1 ]
"What the hell is this…?"
Virgin's blood?
The phrase that came to mind was unfairly related to Cha Soo-ah.
She was currently the woman least associated with me in my life, yet she had been someone I liked and until a few days ago, I firmly believed she was still a virgin.
And then another thought came to mind.
It reminded me of scenes from common fantasy films where women were sacrificed on altars.
My job was also necromancer.
As a dark magic class job, it might involve sacrificing a virgin to grow stronger.
"But it's not about sacrificing; it's blood? Do I have to do something like blood-sucking?"
Honestly, sucking someone's blood is natural enough, but there's an aversion to it.
Moreover, I didn't even know where to find a virgin at this point in time.
In recent years in South Korea, women have been losing their virginity at increasingly younger ages.
Most adults are experienced by now as well.
And now there was a quest asking me to find a virgin among the survivors in this pandemic situation?
'…Maybe this is going to be the hardest part?'
Well, honestly, it didn't matter if it was difficult.
In this zombie world, just being free from zombies already made me nearly invincible.
Still, just in case, I decided to think about the growth quest later on.
I checked the survival quest again.
The content stated that I needed to purchase a crystal for base creation…
"Wait a minute… then…"
As soon as I saw that phrase, excitement surged through me and I immediately shouted out my command.
"Shop window!"
━Ding!
A heart-pounding sound filled my ears as a translucent blue window appeared before my eyes.
I hurriedly checked its contents.
Scrolling down briefly, I checked the list of items in the shop.
"Damn it, of course not. There wouldn't be any."
I sighed in disappointment.
What I found were items necessary for survival—if not modern supplies like food or weapons.
If fresh meat or vegetables were available in the shop, that would truly be a cheat ability.
No matter how abundant food might be at department stores, getting perishable food would be impossible.
So with hope, I checked the shop window again.
"Well… there are some things that look special."
Inside were crystals for base creation as mentioned in the quests.
And there were items commonly referenced in games like potions and elixirs.
"Let's see… The crystal for base creation is 10 points…? Potions are 20 and elixirs are 100…?"
Below each item was marked as needing points instead of the familiar currency of won.
Similarly, in one corner of the shop window was what seemed like points I owned.
It showed 10 points.
'Just enough points to buy one crystal for base creation.'
No need for hesitation here.
These 10 points were likely given as a tutorial bonus.
It meant to teach me how to use the shop window and complete my first survival quest.
I would probably earn more points through some means later on.
━Ding!
[ You have purchased a crystal for base creation. ]
[ Crystal for Base Creation.
By installing it at a specific location, you can designate that area as your base. ]
'A base…'
The base would play an essential role as my center of activity moving forward.
Where I set my base would determine many things.
Historically speaking, that has always been crucial; hence it's designated as part of the quest too.
"Of course there's no other option."
When my previous base was said to be at the university dormitory,
the place I chose now could be considered worlds apart from that.
Naturally enough, my chosen base was on the first basement floor of a department store.
The food corner.
In fact, setting up my base at the bedding section on the third floor was also an option.
That's where I'd actually sleep and eat after all.
But if I needed to establish defensive lines based on my base location, it had to be on the first basement floor without question.
Now that I had awakened my abilities amidst this zombie crisis,
the biggest danger for me would indeed be food shortages.
Having decided on my location, I took the purchased crystal and headed downstairs.
'Do I just throw it down?'
Since this was my first time doing this, I tossed the shining crystal into an appropriate spot.
━Whoosh!
Then the thrown crystal floated in mid-air instead of falling to the ground.
"Wow, it feels like some kind of superconductor."
Even though unreal things like zombies roamed around before me, seeing such fantastical objects felt strange indeed.
I truly felt like I had gained game-like abilities now.
[ You have designated your base location.
Base Location: S Department Store Basement Floor 1. ]
[ Current Base Level: Lv-1 ]
"There's even something called base level?"
I muttered to myself while looking at the message floating before me.
Indeed, it felt like I understood somewhat what this entailed.
The first survival quest: Designate your base location.
And bases have levels too?
Then naturally following steps would involve raising that base level next.
Raising base levels likely meant advantages for survival too?
"But how do you raise it?"
I opened up the survival quest again.
Next to my existing quest appeared a button labeled [Complete].
When pressed, a clear notification appeared and moved on to the next quest.
[ Survival Quest – 2
Grow Your Base
Strengthen your base by nurturing crystals.
Current materials needed for crystal growth: corpses of dead humans.
Corpses: 0/20 ]
This next quest aimed at growing my designated base.
'Well, that makes sense.'
From the moment there was mention of base levels ahead of time; future quests became predictable enough.
But there was one problem—the materials needed for growth.
'Corpses of dead humans…'
Immediately turning my gaze around confirmed there were plenty of zombies scattered around me.
Though they were alive and moving about; their flesh hung loosely revealing bones beneath pale skin—anyone could see they weren't living humans anymore.
"Should I give it a try?"
After all those creatures just wandered aimlessly around.
Using one or two as test subjects didn't seem like much of an issue.
"Ugh... But touching them feels weird…"
Even if they posed no threat to me now,
they still looked broken and battered with injuries and blood everywhere.
Their eyes rolled back white while their skin felt cold.
Plus there was an odd smell coming from them…
'But still... for the sake of quests…'
So far through quests, I hadn't received any significant rewards yet.
But since they were quests,
they'd surely provide benefits similar to those found in games.
I found one relatively intact zombie that seemed suitable for touching.
"...Oh!"
Among them was one with long hair wearing a white dress dirtied with dust—a female zombie.
She resembled what people called "Dongtan look."
Her breasts were quite ample too; her only visible injury being bite marks on her calves.
"Wow! She must've turned into a zombie right after being bitten."
As I approached her slowly examining her body,
her breast size seemed roughly around E-cup.
Of course that's just my estimation.
At this age where I'm still inexperienced,
it wasn't an exact measurement but given my experience watching AVs,
it was certain she wasn't smaller than E-cup.
"She must've been stunning when she was alive."
Her face was quite pretty too.
Though she had turned into a zombie with pale skin showing veins beneath,
her eyes remained beautiful while her nose stood elegantly.
Her lips looked alluringly red against her pale complexion.
Gulp.
Watching her made me involuntarily swallow hard.
'No! No! She's still a corpse!'
For a moment dark thoughts crept into my mind but quickly regained composure.
Even though I'm still an inexperienced virgin,
I have no interest in corpses whatsoever.
But well…. maybe just touching wouldn't hurt?
━Squeeze!
"Wow! It doesn't even fit in one hand!"
Bending down behind Dongtan Zombie,
I grabbed both her large breasts with both hands.
The soft sensation filled my palms completely.
Feeling excitement rise within my pants made me swallow again.
━Thud!
━Jiggle!
Unintentionally reaching behind her back,
I undid her bra clasp causing her breasts to spill out even more prominently.
Gingerly slipping my hand inside her dress,
I began feeling her soft skin beneath.
"...This is amazing."
I felt an overwhelming urge to keep touching her.
The firmness of her nipples contrasted with her soft squishy breasts made me lose track of time as I played with her lifeless body until suddenly noticing my own arousal peeking through my pants which made me pull away quickly.
'If this goes any further...'
It'd be crossing lines into something inappropriate with a corpse!
But still—I didn't want my first experience with someone cold-blooded like this!
After all now that I've awakened these powers,
finding suitable survivors wouldn't be hard at all!
"Well then since you let me touch you so nicely,
let's make you an experimental subject as a keepsake."
Among all those zombies lying around,
this Dongtan Zombie seemed least resistant towards being touched by hands.
Grabbing hold of her hand,
she slowly stumbled along following wherever I led her towards crystals without much effort required from me at all.
After bringing Dongtan Zombie right up close near crystal,
I pondered aloud,
"What should we do now?"
Staring at floating glowing crystal above us,
wondering if we should get closer or not,
I pushed Dongtan Zombie closer against its surface instead.
Then suddenly—
[ Would you like to enhance your crystal? ]
A message appeared before me!
Without hesitation,
I pressed [Yes] immediately!
━Whoosh!
Then light began radiating from within crystal while similar light erupted from Dongtan Zombie standing before it!
Soon enough her body transformed into particles being absorbed into crystal itself!
[ Corpses: 1/20 ]
The message within quest window changed once again!
"So we can count zombies too."
That means this quest is incredibly simple!
There are plenty of human corpses lying around—zombies everywhere!
Now all that's left is gathering enough corpses as food offerings…
"...Wait."
There must've been over hundreds gathered here on basement floor alone!
While planning on feeding these zombies into crystals,
a sudden thought struck me—
'Could these zombies be preventing survivors from entering here?'
Before gaining these powers,
zombies posed serious threats towards anyone else;
but now they serve as protective barriers keeping others away!
In this apocalyptic world where fellow survivors could potentially pose greater risks than zombies themselves…
So utilizing these zombies within quests wouldn't work out well after all;
they act more like valuable resources guarding this department store instead!
Who knows if soldiers from university dormitory might come searching here?
...No wait! If those guys come looking for supplies,
they'll definitely check out this place without fail!
They might even use me as bait while scouting routes too!
"Well then let's go gather some outside instead."
Perfect timing indeed!
Having scouted through department store already;
it seems necessary now exploring surroundings further too!
One downside about department stores is their lack of windows—
to manipulate customers' psychology effectively; they don't install any windows letting light inside!
That's quite famous marketing strategy indeed!
Thus if wanting peek outside from department store;
one must climb up onto rooftop instead…
"How about going out for some fresh air?"
Finding suitable windbreakers along clothing section;
putting them on along with backpack seemed wise choice!
With hood attached; walking amongst zombies wearing these clothes should make distinguishing human presence difficult at first glance!
. . .
Inside cramped studio apartment measuring five pyeong;
only light filtering through window illuminated dimly lit space…
Darkness enveloped quiet room
where woman sat quietly with head resting against knees—
Yoo Ha-yeon…
'...I'm so hungry.'
How long has passed since outbreak began?
She had been living lifelessly within confines of this very room…
Initially terrified; she hoarded food supplies cautiously while hiding away inside…
Yet once refrigerator emptied out completely;
she mustered courage venturing outside searching other rooms nearby…
Fortunately only two zombies lurked within building itself—
one trapped inside room 302 while another roamed aimlessly around first floor…
Compared against initial fears;
searching through entire building proved relatively easy task overall…
After rummaging through various rooms;
she finally managed find some food and water supplies…
But those resources ran dry now entirely…
It had already been three days without eating or drinking anything…
Yoo Ha-yeon faced two choices remaining—
either risk life investigating uncharted territory inside room 302
or escape building altogether risking exposure outside filled with swarming zombies…
Yoo Ha-yeon found herself forced make decision…
Yet hunger gnawed away inside her mind—
'...I'm scared.'
Ultimately deciding against making any choices whatsoever…
Fear overtook immediate concern over becoming zombie meal instead…
She lacked courage facing potential dangers lurking within room 302—
time passed slowly starving further away from hope she'd ever overpower its occupant someday...
Thus Yoo Ha-yeon remained seated lifelessly within own room—
waiting patiently awaiting inevitable demise…
Another day passed by quietly until suddenly—
Clack! Clack!
[ What? It's locked? ]
Someone appeared at front door leading into Yoo Ha-yeon's apartment...
