Chapter 17: What, Killing A God!?
"Can we talk now?" Ryuji said.
"You... who the hell are you...?" Logan groaned, struggling to straighten up, his lower back screaming from the damage he'd taken.
Victor looked even worse, sitting awkwardly as his pelvis had taken a brutal hit.
"Ahem... damn it, you're a pain," Victor spat, still catching his breath.
"Actually, we're the same kind of people. We're all mutants," Ryuji stated calmly, his tone giving nothing away.
Logan furrowed his brows. "What?"
Victor blinked. "Mutants?"
"Yeah. What did you think you were?"
"Monsters," the two said in unison.
"Monsters? Heh. We're not monsters; we're gods."
Logan and Victor stared at him. "What?"
"A long, long time ago—so long ago there's no precise record of it—the first celestial beings came to Earth. They modified some of the early life here, and that was the origin of modern mutants," Ryuji explained, his voice steady.
Logan and Victor were both stunned, their minds spinning at the sheer weight of the information.
"Of course, people call us mutants because they don't understand. I prefer the term 'Awakened.' See, our abilities come from the X-Gene. It's a dormant part of our DNA—hidden, untraceable with current science. It only activates under extreme stress, life-threatening situations, or some other catalyst."
Logan interrupted. "Wait. So, if this gene has been passed down for generations, across borders and continents... doesn't that mean that anyone on Earth could have it?"
"Potentially, yes," Ryuji replied, "but not everyone does. Those who carry the dormant X-Gene are at what I call the 'Zeta Level.' They have the potential to become mutants, but it doesn't mean they'll awaken."
Logan fell silent. The man who'd spent decades believing he was a freak—a monster—was now hearing he was a descendant of beings who'd tampered with the universe itself.
Victor, on the other hand, couldn't stop grinning. "So we're not monsters. We're... we're gods, huh?" He laughed, though there was a hint of disbelief in it.
Ryuji shrugged. "Not gods in the traditional sense, but we're far from ordinary humans."
Logan and Victor exchanged a look. Even with their healing factors, they knew better than to challenge someone who'd just wiped the floor with them.
"So, you really want us to join you for some big job?" Logan asked, curiosity winning over skepticism. "What kind of job are we talking about?"
Ryuji's eyes narrowed. "Killing a god."
"--What?"
Victor choked, coughing as if he misheard. "Killing a god? Are you serious?"
Ryuji nodded. "We're talking about Ares—the God of War."
Logan's brow furrowed. "Wait. Ares? As in Greek mythology? That guy exists?"
Ryuji smirked. "More than you'd like to believe. He didn't start the war, but he escalated it. Millions have died because of him."
Victor clenched his fists, anger boiling over. "That bastard's been causing all this carnage? Count me in!"
Ryuji looked at Victor thoughtfully. Despite his violent nature, Victor still held onto some humanity. There was a spark of conscience left.
Logan, however, remained wary. "You're saying we're going to fight Ares? The son of Zeus? Why don't you let Zeus deal with him?"
Ryuji's expression darkened. "Because Zeus is dead. So are the rest of the Olympian gods."
"What?!" Logan's voice echoed with disbelief.
Victor flinched. "The hell happened to them?"
"In the final battle—the twilight of the gods—Zeus and the others confronted Ares. One by one, they fell. Zeus was the last standing, and though he managed to drive Ares back with a mortal wound, he didn't survive it either. Before dying, Zeus forged a weapon capable of killing Ares."
Logan's eyes narrowed. "And I'm guessing you have this weapon?"
Ryuji shook his head. "No. The weapon is in the hands of Zeus' daughter—my companion."
Victor let out an involuntary, confused, "Nani?"
Logan blinked. "Wait. Zeus' daughter? And she doesn't know she's supposed to be the one to kill Ares? So we're just... backup?"
"That's one way to look at it," Ryuji replied.
Logan sighed, but there was a flicker of interest in his eyes. "Fine. I'll play along. Killing a god sounds like something worth seeing."
Victor's teeth flashed in a feral grin. "Hell yeah! Let's see if that war-happy bastard is as tough as the legends say!"
The deaths Victor had seen on countless battlefields weighed heavily on him. Friends, comrades—destroyed by wars fueled by men like Ares. If there was a chance to take revenge, he'd grab it.
Ryuji turned, his back to the two mutants. "We meet at the Old Wine Barrel Hotel, 6 AM tomorrow. This is a once-in-a-century shot to kill a god. Don't waste it."
Victor growled. "Are you kidding me? I'm not backing down from this!"
Logan simply nodded, thoughtful as ever.
Ryuji paused at the alley's entrance. "Oh, and one more thing. Don't mention Zeus' daughter. She doesn't know her role in this yet."
"Got it," Logan muttered.
Victor grumbled, "Fine, whatever."
Ryuji disappeared into the shadows, leaving Logan and Victor to process everything they'd just heard.
Killing a god.
It sounded impossible.
And yet, neither of them could resist the pull of the fight.
Tomorrow, the real war would begin.
