Chapter 29: Gustav's Giant Cannon
"Ryuji's right. A castle like this, likely an old noble's residence, isn't suitable for producing massive quantities of gas bombs," Victor said. "If there were a leak, no one in the castle would survive."
"Also, look up there," Ryuji said, pointing to the top of the castle.
"What is that?" Diana frowned.
As the sky darkened, Logan squinted at the structure and sucked in a breath. "That's... Gustav's giant cannon!"
"???"
Ryuji, a weapons enthusiast, immediately recognized the weapon. Gustav's giant cannon, famously known as Dora, was one of the most devastating weapons ever created. Its 800 mm caliber and 7-ton shells made it a monstrous creation of warfare.
But it was developed during World War II. Why would it be here, during a timeline resembling World War I?
Then it hit him—this wasn't Earth.
Upon closer inspection, the cannon wasn't identical to its World War II counterpart. Instead, it appeared to be a simplified, stationary version—a fixed turret with a smaller caliber and barrel length.
Even so, its destructive potential couldn't be underestimated.
"This thing is dangerous," Diana muttered, observing the colossal weapon.
She didn't need to know its history to see its power. The ultra-thick barrel and massive size spoke for themselves. Yesterday, she had struggled to withstand the shells of an armored car. This cannon was ten times larger.
If one of its shells struck her, even she wasn't sure she could survive.
"It's not just dangerous—it's aimed somewhere specific," Ryuji said, wiping his brow.
Diana's expression changed as she realized what he meant. Her eyes widened. "That's… Feld Town!"
The small town they had rescued just yesterday.
Logan's face darkened. "The original Gustav cannon had a maximum range of 38 kilometers. Even a simplified version like this one could easily hit Feld Town."
Victor's fists clenched as his mouth twitched. "Samantha…"
The woman he'd been with the previous night was in Feld Town. The thought of her dying in agony fueled his rage.
"They wouldn't fire without a reason, would they?" Diana asked.
"Do you think they don't know that Feld Town was evacuated?" Ryuji responded, deflecting her question.
Logan nodded. "The town is only about 10 hours from here. As a frontline defense point, news from the battle must have reached them by now."
"Then... is this cannon aimed at us?" Victor asked.
"Possibly," Logan said grimly. "If the fight in Feld lasted longer, they might have fired to wipe out the front line. But we defeated them too quickly. They may not have received the news in time. However, if they have a backup communication method, they could know by now."
"Don't let them fire!" Diana said through gritted teeth.
"I can stop the shells from firing," Ryuji said, "but if I do, the cannon will explode, and the mustard gas could leak. Everyone in this castle would die a horrible death."
Mustard gas wasn't something to take lightly. It was deadly, corrosive, and left victims horribly disfigured. During its first use in World War I, it killed thousands in minutes. If it leaked here, nothing in the castle would survive.
"But Steve and the others…" Diana began, her expression conflicted.
Steve and Samir were still inside the castle.
Ryuji shrugged helplessly. "I only just noticed the cannon."
Diana's suspicions briefly flared but quickly faded. From the angle of their earlier ambush, the cannon hadn't been visible. There was no way Ryuji could have known earlier.
"Are you sure they'll fire?" Diana asked again.
"I'm not sure," Ryuji admitted.
"Then… can we disable the barrel instead?"
"We can't damage the cannon unless we're sure they'll fire. If we destroy it preemptively, Ludendorff will know we're here. And that leaves us with two possibilities," Ryuji said.
"Which are?" Diana asked.
"First, Ludendorff panics and orders planes loaded with gas bombs to take off and bomb their target. We don't know where the base is, nor do we know the target. That would mean mission failure.
Second, Ludendorff escapes and makes his way to the military base. Either way, it's bad news."
Logan sighed, feeling the weight of their predicament. "If he's smart, he won't risk leaving the castle. He'll assume we've set up ambushes outside."
Victor nodded. "The first scenario seems more likely. If the base is alerted, they'll drop the poison gas from the air, and we won't be able to stop them."
Diana clenched her fists. "Then we make the cannon unable to fire. But we have to warn Steve to evacuate first."
"No problem. I can sneak in and handle that," Ryuji said confidently. "But what about the base?"
"The base?"
"If the cannon explodes, I'm not sure if it'll be visible from the base. If they see it, they might react. Diana, I'll need you to scout from above. Look for the base—it can't be far from the castle."
Diana hesitated for only a moment before nodding. "Understood."
