Chapter 50: Wayne, Stark, Osborne
After arriving in Los Angeles, Ryuji wasn't in any particular rush. New York, for now, held little appeal; it wasn't the bustling metropolis everyone would someday recognize.
Gazing at the barren hills of "Hollywood," Ryuji felt like he was witnessing history in the making.
The iconic white "HOLLYWOOD" sign, which would one day define the area, was nowhere to be seen. It might take a few more years to make its debut. For now, Hollywood was merely a small town of about ten thousand residents.
While a few barn-like studios dotted the area, the golden age of cinema and the establishment of the big studio system was just beginning. The famed Walk of Fame? Still a distant dream.
"You seem unusually interested in this place," Diana observed, her curiosity piqued.
"Not really," Ryuji replied with a faint smile. "It's just lively, that's all."
Of course, it wasn't the town he cared about. Ryuji's real interest lay in the iconic stars that would eventually emerge from here. Names like Greta Garbo, Vivien Leigh, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor came to mind.
Unfortunately, the Hollywood of 1920 had little to offer him, so after wandering aimlessly for a while, the group moved on, heading for New York.
This time, they traveled by train.
Their journey, which could be described as a partial circumnavigation of the globe, was nearing its end.
After a week, they finally arrived in New York City. The year was now 1920.
---
"Find us a place to stay," Ryuji instructed, stepping off the train. "Once we're settled, Samir, I'll need you to gather some information."
"Got it, boss."
"Focus on the most powerful families in this city. Also, I want to know about the roughest part of town."
"Leave it to me!" Samir declared with enthusiasm.
Though Samir wasn't entirely sure what Ryuji's plan was, his loyalty was unwavering.
The hotel they chose was modest—Ryuji had grander plans for a permanent residence, but he needed confirmation before acting on them.
Diana raised an eyebrow as she watched him issue orders. "What exactly are you planning?"
"You'll see," Ryuji replied with a mysterious smile.
Diana sighed, sensing he wouldn't divulge any more information for now.
As they settled in, Diana couldn't help but think back on their journey.
Ryuji's actions on the train had been... peculiar. While traveling, he had robbed several gangsters who made the mistake of approaching them with less-than-honorable intentions.
Though Diana disapproved of his methods, she had to admit that Doutzen Carlos's allure often brought trouble. Unlike Diana's noble and restrained demeanor, Doutzen exuded a provocative charm that seemed to attract unsavory characters wherever they went.
Ryuji, of course, dealt with such individuals swiftly—and profitably. By the time they reached New York, he had accumulated a small fortune, much of which he intended to exchange for cash.
---
Three days later, Samir returned with his findings.
"Boss, I've got the scoop," Samir said, gulping down a glass of water.
"Let's hear it."
"There are four major families in New York, and they control nearly everything. Their influence is spread throughout the city. One of them is the Stark family—you know, Robert Stark."
Ryuji blinked. "Seriously?"
"Yep," Samir confirmed. "But the Stark family isn't one of the original founding families of New York. This city was originally built by four powerful clans: the Wayne family, the Kane family, the Osborne family, and..."
Samir paused for effect.
"And who else?" Ryuji asked impatiently.
"The Elliott family," Samir finished.
Ryuji leaned back, absorbing the information. The Wayne family? As in Bruce Wayne? This wasn't just Marvel anymore—this world was a fusion of Marvel and DC.
In DC lore, Gotham City had been founded by four families: the Waynes, the Kanes, the Elliotts, and the Cobblepots (Penguin's lineage). But in this universe, it seemed Gotham didn't exist. Instead, its legacy had been absorbed into Marvel's New York.
"So, what happened to the Elliotts?" Ryuji asked, intrigued.
Samir shrugged. "They vanished. No one knows exactly why. Some say the Wayne and Kane families conspired to wipe them out. Others believe it was internal strife."
Ryuji smirked. "Classic power plays. And the Osborne family?"
"Still around, but they're not as influential as the Waynes or Kanes. Same with the Stark family. They're second-tier players for now, but both families are on the rise. Rumor has it Howard Stark's already showing signs of genius, even as a kid."
Ryuji chuckled. "Of course he is."
The convergence of Marvel and DC elements was fascinating. The Wayne and Kane families were still dominant forces, while the Stark and Osborne families were clawing their way to prominence.
"What about the worst part of town?" Ryuji asked, shifting gears.
Samir's expression darkened. "Hell's Kitchen."
