Chapter 220: Chapter 220: Aftermath
Watching the helicopter take off, William silently wished that little Dia could overcome his trauma and start anew. Initially, William had considered settling Solomon and his family near Fort Oxford, believing that saving them would ensure Solomon's loyalty. However, thinking about Dia, he discarded the idea. William couldn't trust someone who had been forced into killing and drug use. Even though Dia was coerced, who knew what he might become in the future? Despite his distrust, William hoped Solomon's family would have a good life ahead.
With Solomon gone, William noticed Archer looking uneasy and melancholic. "Care for a walk, Archer?"
"Of course, sir," Archer quickly nodded, picking up the heavy bag filled with money and following William.
Seeing Archer struggle with the 40-kilogram bag containing $4.9 million, William laughed and led him across the grass. "I heard you were desperate to get your hands on that diamond to leave Africa? Now that you have both the diamond and money, what will you do next?"
For Archer, the heavy bag was a burden, but the money inside was a sweet reward. However, he wasn't foolish enough to be blinded by joy. Hearing William's question, Archer looked embarrassed. "Don't joke, Mr. Devonshire. This diamond isn't mine; it's yours. Only you deserve to own it."
Archer handed the diamond to William, who shook his head with a smile, making Archer even more uneasy. "Sir, I really don't intend to keep it. It's not meant for someone like me. A 100-carat flawless pink diamond could sell for tens of millions on the black market, potentially even fetching a hundred million at auction. I'm satisfied with the $4.9 million."
William didn't take the diamond. Instead, he looked at Archer seriously. "How about earning another five million?"
"Five million?" Archer looked at William in confusion. "May I ask what it's for, sir?"
"I hear you know quite a few leaders in the diamond industry?"
"Yes, over the years, I've sold many of General Frobe's diamonds to Simmons at De Beers' London headquarters and Vandyke," Archer replied.
William smiled upon hearing these names. "Are these two the leaders of the diamond cartel?"
"Yes, sir," Archer said, feeling increasingly uneasy.
"Archer, you're different from Solomon. Solomon risked his life mostly for his family, so I had to let him go for the sake of his young daughter. But you, Archer, are different. Help me out by delivering that diamond to Mr. Simmons at De Beers. Can you do that?"
"Do I have a choice?" Archer shrugged, looking at Christmas, Gunnar, and Caesar, who were armed and ready.
William laughed. "I like smart people who understand that everything has a price. So, Archer, what's your life worth?"
Cursing internally, Archer knew he had no choice. He didn't dare bet on William sparing his life. After a long internal struggle, he gritted his teeth and said, "Fifteen million dollars plus the proceeds from selling the diamond to De Beers."
"No problem, Archer. I thought you might ask for a hundred million. Fifteen million, very well, it's a deal." William shook the indifferent Archer's hand. "This gentleman will accompany you to London. Once the job is done, I'll arrange a new identity for you. If you wish, you can even work for me. Goodbye, Mr. Archer."
William nodded to Christmas and walked away with Gunnar and Road. Christmas turned to Archer. "Come with me, Mr. Archer. Let me remind you, if you don't want to be hunted by the Continental Hotel, you better follow the boss's instructions. If you succeed, there might be a bonus. Oh, and that lady is in London. You might meet her there after the job is done."
Archer's face warmed as he saw a picture of Maddie Bowen leaving the airport on Christmas's left-arm microcomputer. "Don't disturb her. Otherwise, even if it kills me, I'll ruin your plans."
"Don't worry, Archer. Maddie Bowen is irrelevant to us. As long as you do your job, we won't bother her. But as we know, she's sorting through your notes. She might publish a report that could be problematic for you. You wouldn't want that, would you?"
"Fuck," Archer swore, thinking about the notes he'd given Maddie. He felt a sense of urgency. "Let's get moving. I want to see Simmons in London within ten hours."
"No problem."
Christmas changed into civilian clothes, and an hour later, a private plane landed at Kano Airport. Christmas and Yin Yang boarded with two sets of Black Blade drone equipment and took off for London with Archer.
Watching the plane take off, William called his private advisor Felix at the Swiss National Bank, instructing him to gather the trading teams they had previously worked with and await his orders. He then called Brian and Sam in the USA, ordering their team to go to Switzerland and monitor the traders, ensuring no contact with the outside world until the operation was complete.
With everything in place, William, Gunnar, and Road found Antonov in the airport's medical area. William asked, "What's the situation?"
Antonov, looking grim, replied, "Five dead, three severely injured, seven lightly injured, and two likely disabled."
"Weren't they ambushed? How did we suffer so many casualties?" William demanded.
"Well, we haven't fought for years. Training has been neglected due to lack of funds. The third team's sniper missed the enemy's machine gunner, and in those few seconds, we lost three heavily injured and two dead," Antonov explained.
"And the other two?" William asked.
"One of the remaining dead was a gunner blown up by an RPG, and another seriously injured was hit in the neck by a stray bullet," Antonov hesitated before adding, "The last dead was the sniper who missed the machine gunner."
With that, Antonov excused himself to tend to the wounded.
As soon as Antonov left, Gunnar said, "Boss, that sniper was definitely killed by his own men. They're just trying to get some money for his family from you."
