Chapter 15: The Cost of ignorance Part-3
As soon as Chabashira-sensei revealed the class points, showing that Class D had dropped to zero, the classroom descended into chaos. Yamauchi broke the silence with his loud, agonized cry, slumping over his desk in disbelief.
"I… I used up all my points already! What am I supposed to do now?" Yamauchi wailed, gripping his hair as if the realization was too much for him to handle.
The rest of the students exchanged worried glances, murmuring anxiously among themselves. The room buzzed with panic as the weight of their situation began to sink in. Many had spent their points lavishly, assuming they would continue to receive the monthly allowance without any issues.
Chabashira-sensei looked at the room filled with worried faces and smirked. "Did you all finally understand? Why you were placed in Class D?"
A student raised their voice in confusion, "The reason we were put in Class D? Isn't that because we were appropriate for this school?"
Chabashira-sensei chuckled darkly, "Appropriate for this school, you say? Eh? That's how ordinary classes work, you know?"
The class fell silent, tension hanging in the air as the teacher's words began to sink in.
"In this school," Chabashira continued, her voice cold and sharp, "all students are divided into classes by merit. The best students are put in Class A. The worst in Class D. It's a system found in many major cram schools."
The weight of her words hit the class like a tidal wave.
"In other words, Class D is a collection of leftovers. You are the worst students here—the defective products of this school. This is truly an outcome worthy of defective students." Her tone was condescending, mocking even.
Horikita, who had remained calm for most of the situation, visibly stiffened at this revelation. Her composed facade cracked slightly as her face tightened in disbelief. It was clear that being labeled as a "defective student" rattled her.
Sasuke sat silently, observing the reactions around him with a cold detachment. The commotion seemed meaningless to him, but he couldn't help but note Horikita's shock. *It seems the division of classes hits some harder than others,* he thought, his expression unreadable.
Chabashira-sensei continued, "However, I must applaud you all for living so lavishly for an entire month without realizing the consequences of your actions." She clapped her hands mockingly, her applause echoing through the room. "How praiseworthy."
One of the students raised their voice again, their tone tinged with desperation. "After hitting zero points, does that mean we'll always stay at zero?"
The teacher's expression didn't change. "Yes. Your points will stay at zero until graduation. However, be at ease—you can still use your dorms, and there are free meals in the cafeteria. You won't die."
The response did little to ease the students' minds. Though they wouldn't starve, a life restricted to the bare minimum was not the luxurious high school experience they had been promised. Some of the students, like Sudou, voiced their frustrations aloud.
"Will we be made fun of by the other classes now?" Sudou's temper flared, and he kicked his desk with a loud *bang*, his frustration clear.
Chabashira's eyes gleamed with a sadistic glint as she addressed the class once again, "What, you're still holding onto your pride, Sudou? Then do your best and try to make the worst class into the best class."
"Huh? What are you saying?" Sudou growled.
"These class points aren't just linked to your monthly allowance," Chabashira explained. "They're also indicative of your class rank. In other words, if, for example, Class D had held onto 500 points, you'd have been promoted to Class C."
The room fell silent again as the full implications of the points system started to sink in. The students' futures were directly tied to these points—money, promotions, even their ability to stay in the school.
"And now," Chabashira's voice grew darker, "I have one more piece of bad news to share with you all."
She walked to the blackboard and pinned a piece of paper up for all to see. It was a list of every student's name, accompanied by numbers. Everyone stared at the board in confusion.
"These are your scores from the test a few days ago," Chabashira explained. "Sensei was quite impressed by the results." Her sarcasm was evident, and her eyes glinted with malice as she scanned the students' reactions.
Almost everyone's scores were abysmally low, with Sudou's 14 points standing out as one of the worst. "If this had been a recorded test," Chabashira said coldly, "seven of you would have already been expelled."
A collective gasp spread across the room.
"E-expelled?!" Ike shouted in disbelief. "What do you mean expelled?!"
Chabashira smirked. "If you get a failing score on either a midterm or final exam, you will be expelled from the school. On this test, that would have been everyone who scored below 32 points."
Suddenly, the grim reality of the school's rules weighed heavily on the students.
Sasuke glanced at the board, noting his perfect scores across all subjects. His sharp eyes flicked toward Ayanokoji, who had scored exactly 50 on each test. The consistency was suspicious. *He's hiding something,* Sasuke thought, his suspicions of Ayanokoji deepening.
As the room erupted into further chaos, Yukimura shot up from his seat, his frustration boiling over. "How is this even possible?! We're supposed to be students at a prestigious school, and yet we're treated like this?"
Yukimura turned his attention to two figures in particular—Koenji and Sasuke. He pointed at them accusingly.
"Koenji! Sasuke! You're just sitting there like none of this matters. Don't you feel any resentment? Don't you care that we've been labeled as defective students?"
Koenji let out a soft laugh, twirling his hair with a smirk. "Resentment? What a meaningless concept. This school hasn't seen my full potential yet. I care not for such trivial rankings."
Sasuke, seated calmly, met Yukimura's gaze with cold eyes. "I have no interest in this class or its rankings," he said bluntly. "I'm here for different reasons."
Yukimura's jaw tightened in frustration, unable to comprehend their indifference. Sasuke's response, in particular, piqued Ayanokoji's curiosity. His eyes flickered with suspicion. *Different reasons? Could he be connected to the White Room?* he wondered, analyzing Sasuke's every move.
With the weight of their reality now sinking in, the students of Class D found themselves staring down an uncertain future. And amidst the confusion and despair, Sasuke remained calm, watching the unfolding drama with a detached and calculating eye.
