Chapter 3: The Living Dead
Li Mo's expression was stern as he calmly stared at the door of the broadcasting room.
"This is a ghost with a human consciousness, mixed in with the crowd. Gathering the survivors in this room might have another reason…"
"If that's the case, then the danger posed by this ghost is much lower than I anticipated. After all, a ghost that can't actively kill people can't threaten me."
"The most urgent task right now is to find that ghost and restrain it, then rescue the people trapped in the room. Although I don't know what the ghost's purpose is, it's always right to not follow its plans."
With that in mind, Li Mo took a deep breath, raised his hand, and lightly knocked on the broadcasting room door.
He certainly didn't dare to open it.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The crisp knocks echoed through the quiet corridor.
A hoarse male voice came from inside the broadcasting room. The voice was very heavy, unlike that of a normal young person.
The students of St. Freya should all be in their teens, at most in their early twenties. Valkyries' lifespans were far shorter than those of normal people, and they would face the problem of their physical functions not being able to keep up and the price of mandatory retirement in their early twenties.
Teacher Himeko was an example of this.
"There's something wrong with the person talking."
Li Mo had already come to a conclusion just by hearing the voice.
It was an intuition, a sharp intuition gained after experiencing many bizarre occurrences.
At least in this world, no one understood the bizarre entities better than Li Mo.
"Creak..." A rubbing sound rang out, and the door was opened. The narrow broadcasting room was packed with students. Their hair was disheveled, and they were thin and emaciated. Their tender faces were filled with exhaustion, and their eyes were dull.
The lights on the ceiling flickered, dimly illuminating the room.
If a normal person stayed in this atmosphere for a long time, their mentality and psychology would undergo enormous changes.
There wasn't much food and drinking water. There were seventeen students and one teacher. This showed that the others should be normal people.
"Student, come in quickly. There are ghosts outside!"
The teacher urged in a rough voice, waving his hands to motion for Li Mo to enter the broadcasting room.
The other students also wore terrified expressions on their faces. A few of them echoed the teacher's words.
But Li Mo didn't go in. A slight smile formed on the corners of his lips. He deliberately pretended to not know anything and teased them, "Teacher, you're such an old man. Do you really believe in ghosts? I'm a staunch materialist. I don't believe there are things in this world that science can't explain."
The teasing was just to distract them. Li Mo reached into his bag under his clothes and took out a silver coin.
[A coin stained with some kind of bizarre rule: When thrown, a ghost will definitely pick it up. ]
Li Mo flicked his finger and shot the coin into the crowd in the broadcasting room.
He was now roughly certain that this teacher was problematic. His voice was the same as the one he heard before opening the door, and it was also he who had opened the door on his own initiative, urgently wanting him to go inside.
Of course, he couldn't rely solely on intuition unless it was absolutely necessary.
So, he currently lacked concrete evidence, and Li Mo was creating that conclusive evidence.
He threw the coin into the crowd. Under normal circumstances, this teacher who had opened the door shouldn't have paid attention to such behavior.
After all, it was just a trivial coin, not worth much.
Even if it were a gold coin, in this bizarre atmosphere, no one would care too much. A bottle of water was far more precious.
A normal teacher should be talking to Li Mo at this time and wouldn't be able to care about so much, let alone rush into the crowd to find a coin.
But the moment the coin landed, the teacher who had opened the door had a glazed look in his eyes. He lost his focus, and like a machine, he stiffly turned around and slowly walked toward the crowd...
"Pr-Principal?"
A student couldn't help but call out. But he was completely oblivious, and like a zombie, he walked to where the coin was and bent down to pick it up.
The moment he picked up the coin, he regained his senses. "Huh? I… what happened? Sorry about that. I couldn't help but pick up this coin when I saw it. So, the student outside, come in, the broadcasting room is safe. We've been here for over ten days and nothing has happened."
In an instant, Li Mo put away his frivolous smile, his eyes turning cold.
His right hand went to his waist, ready to draw his gun and shoot the guy in the head at any moment.
There were no cracks on the coin…
It was safe to enter.
Actually, the best option would have been to stand outside the door and shoot this teacher… no, this unknown principal. If one shot didn't kill him, everyone would naturally know what was going on.
But from his reaction just now, this middle-aged man called the principal didn't even realize that he was a ghost.
If it was a ghost disguised as him, then Li Mo couldn't guarantee that he could hit him at that distance.
And there must be a reason why the ghost kept so many people in the room without killing them. He had to find a way to get these future Valkyries out of here.
"Okay, I'll go in."
Li Mo decided to deal with it after going inside. He wasn't the one who opened the door. The ghost had opened the door for him. The other students could enter safely, so there was no reason he would die.
As expected, Li Mo didn't repeat the tragic scene of his head falling to the ground after entering the broadcasting room, but the principal quickly closed the door.
The entire broadcasting room instantly became dark.
The principal walked up to Li Mo and said patiently,
"What's your name, student? I've never met you before. By the way, if you need to use the restroom, there's a separate bathroom in the broadcasting room, but it's best to save it… you know, there's not much food and water."
"There are ghosts wandering around the school. Many people have died outside! The broadcasting room is the only safe place!"
"Ah… when will headquarters' rescue team arrive…"
The principal was talking non-stop. What he said didn't seem to have any major issues. He had both the summarization ability of a leader and the complaints of an ordinary person. He didn't look like a ghost at all.
But Li Mo, with his keen sense of smell, smelled the stench of a corpse on the person in front of him.
It was just perfectly covered by the strong smell of fermented intestines. If he hadn't been dealing with corpses for a long time, he wouldn't have been able to smell it.
Judging by the intensity of the stench, this person had been dead for about ten days.
Li Mo calmly replied, "Before I answer, could you tell me your identification information? It's basic etiquette to state your identity before asking others."
The principal was curious about Li Mo's coldness, but he didn't pay too much attention to it.
He still patiently explained, "Yes, that's right. I'm the head of discipline at this school, Ekri Shaw."
Li Mo walked up to Ekri and held out his hand. "Give me back the coin first."
Ekri was taken aback for a moment, then smiled apologetically. "Haha, sorry, I forgot. This is your personal property. I shouldn't have taken it. But with the situation right now, you can't buy anything with money. Food is already scarce. If headquarters doesn't send reinforcements, I'm afraid we're all going to die here."
After saying that, Ekri returned the coin to Li Mo.
Li Mo turned around to face the students huddled in the corner. Their faces were sallow, their complexions were pale, and the whites of their eyes were bloodshot.
"Do you guys think so too? That he's the head of discipline?" Li Mo questioned.
"Mm..."
"Mm..."
"Mm..."
Without exception, all of the dozen or so students responded with an "Mm."
At this time, Ekri felt somewhat displeased. He didn't know why he suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable.
From when they were outside the door to now after entering the door, this boy completely ignored him.
Even if it was a test, it should have a limit, right?
I've already told you my name, and he's still holding back. He doesn't respect his elders. In this kind of situation, we should trust each other!
Thinking this, Ekri felt his head spinning a bit. He walked up to Li Mo and asked, "Student, are you doubting my identity? Could I be fabricating an identity? All the students here know me. There's no possibility of it being fake. Isn't it normal for a school to have a head of discipline?"
Li Mo glanced at the head of discipline and slowly said, "It's normal for a school to have a head of discipline, but what is this place? The Far East Branch, St. Freya Academy, is a place that specializes in training Valkyries."
"There's no need for a head of discipline here. There are only three identities: teacher, academy head, and student. So, where did the identity of head of discipline come from?"
After Li Mo said this, all the students couldn't help but look at Ekri.
Ekri himself was also a bit confused.
That's right, this is St. Freya Academy, a place for training Valkyries…
Why would there be a head of discipline?
But he was clearly the head of discipline! The students all knew it!
"Wait, there must be some kind of misunderstanding! My students all know!" Ekri turned around to explain.
When he turned around, all the students began to move away from him.
"You don't think I'm a ghost, do you!? If I were a ghost, I would've killed you all a long time ago! No one has died after spending so many days together. Are you still doubting me? Shouldn't you be more suspicious of the person who suddenly entered the school?"
"You have to know, headquarters also sent reinforcements before, but they all died at the hands of the ghosts wandering around the school. Why is this person able to meet us unscathed?"
Ekri was very anxious, desperately trying to prove that there was nothing wrong with him.
But the more anxious he was, the more suspicious it seemed.
But the students wouldn't buy it. They gradually realized that there were errors in their perceptions and memories. How could St. Freya have a head of discipline?
St. Freya only had three identities: student, teacher, and academy head. This was something engraved in every student's mind.
It was just that some bizarre phenomenon had caused their perceptions and memories to produce illusions, making them believe there was also a head of discipline.
Therefore, when Li Mo pointed this out, all the students suddenly realized the truth and completely sobered up.
Ekri roared loudly. Seeing that his explanation was ineffective, he turned his head and tried to turn the blame on Li Mo.
"And you, you are the..."
Before Ekri could finish speaking, a silver-gray pistol was pressed against his forehead.
Li Mo put his index finger between his lips, gesturing to be silent.
"Shh, be quiet. I know you're in a hurry, but don't rush."
