Chapter 7: The Promise
Shigure Kira turned around to check Li Mo's reaction.
But what Shigure Kira found strange was that Li Mo's face was a poker face the entire time. There was no change in his eyes or facial expressions. He didn't react at all.
It was as if he wasn't looking at a bloody and disgusting scene but rather at a very natural landscape?
For a moment, Shigure Kira actually thought that Li Mo, who was standing next to her, was a corpse because only corpses would have no reaction to external stimuli.
Suddenly, Li Mo spoke.
"Don't worry about it. Go back to the depths of the auditorium. Nothing will happen."
"Huh?" Shigure Kira was enraged. What did he mean by "nothing will happen?" Didn't he see those nasty things were coming toward them?
"What nonsense are you talking about? Are you just going to watch as those vile and disgusting heads enter the auditorium? Fine. You step back. Even if it's just me, I can protect everyone. I'm very strong."
Shigure Kira unleashed the Honkai energy in her body, covering the broken sword and using the energy to temporarily repair the missing part of the blade.
Li Mo calmly shook his head and said frankly, "They can't get in. You'll die if you rush out right now."
"Ghosts can't be killed. If you really had that ability, you wouldn't be hiding in the auditorium with me to avoid them."
Shigure Kira: "Meh..."
"Wait, how are you so sure that they won't come in?"
Li Mo: "Based on what you said earlier, I deduced that you must have entered St. Freya this morning or at noon. Then, you went to the rooms in the teaching building and encountered a few ghosts. After that, you retreated while fighting and retreated to the auditorium. After that, the ghosts stopped attacking you and turned to leave."
Shigure Kira: "That's right, but the heads are clearly coming for us in the auditorium now. They won't leave. To be honest, I can't hold them off alone."
Li Mo: "I can tell you very responsibly that this academy is completely different after 7 PM than during the day. St. Freya at night is a true hell on earth. Vengeful spirits revive, and supernatural events emerge."
"During this time, the logic of the vengeful spirits will change to a certain extent. During the day, you hid in the auditorium and weren't attacked again, which means the auditorium can shield the ghosts' senses or break the connection between humans and ghosts."
"And at night, the ghosts can sense us, which means something has changed in the auditorium during this period. There must be some details we haven't noticed."
"So, the key to breaking the situation lies inside the auditorium, not with the heads outside."
"Even if the entire Schicksal came, forcibly confronting them would only lead to our burial here. If you want to survive, you must first figure out what exactly has happened in the auditorium."
Shigure Kira bit her lip. She clenched her fist and then suddenly released it, withdrawing the Honkai energy.
Although she was very unwilling, Li Mo was right. Even if the entire Schicksal came, they could only be buried in front of these unkillable and uncontainable enemies.
The key to breaking the situation was inside the auditorium, not with the heads outside.
"Based on the current distance, they will be able to enter the auditorium in at most three minutes. Are you confident you can handle it?" Shigure Kira couldn't help but ask.
She urgently hoped that Li Mo would give her a definite answer. Unfortunately, things didn't go as she wished.
Li Mo shook his head in denial. "No. If things really get to that point, I will commit suicide."
"Suicide?" Shigure Kira was dumbfounded. Did Li Mo seem that mentally fragile? He didn't look like it...
Li Mo ignored Shigure Kira's confusion and took out a silver-white coin, saying seriously, "Three minutes is indeed too short. This coin should be able to extend the time to ten minutes."
[A coin stained with some kind of bizarre rule: When thrown, a ghost will definitely pick it up.]
After saying that, Li Mo placed the coin in Shigure Kira's hand. "You're stronger than me. Throw it, but don't throw it too far. About a hundred meters behind the first head."
"Huh? Throw a coin?" Shigure Kira was bewildered, but she did as Li Mo said and threw the coin a hundred meters behind the first head. This was a piece of cake for a Class A Valkyrie.
Li Mo nodded in satisfaction. If it was thrown too close, it wouldn't delay the time enough. If it was thrown too far, the ghosts wouldn't sense it at all.
The coin drew a beautiful arc in the air and landed right in the empty eye socket of a certain head.
Instantly, the ground stopped shaking.
"It, it stopped?" Shigure Kira looked in disbelief at the hundreds and thousands of heads that had stopped.
But the static situation didn't last long. In the next second, all the heads suddenly leapt up, tearing and gnawing at that head's eyes...
Because the head-eating ghosts didn't have hands, they could only "pick up" the coin by "eating."
"This works too!? Why didn't you take it out earlier if you had this good stuff!"
Shigure Kira was overjoyed. She was about to give Li Mo a high-five but noticed that Li Mo, who wasn't even afraid of the sky-covering head-eating ghosts, was now showing a distressed expression.
He was also muttering softly, "My coin... My coin..."
Shigure Kira's lips twitched. It seemed like he only had one. Just look at how distressed he was...
This coin was something Li Mo had risked his life to obtain during a bizarre event in a previous world. It had saved Li Mo several times.
Now that it had been thrown into the head-eating ghost pile, the head-eating ghosts wouldn't target them again before the bizarre rule on the coin left.
Rules collided with rules. The incomplete rule on the coin was ultimately unable to withstand the overwhelming tide of head-eating ghosts. The supernatural ability on it would soon be completely transferred, and it would end up as an ordinary coin.
"Let's go. The coin won't last long. We must immediately restore the auditorium's shielding ability."
"I will devote all my energy to finding a way to break the situation. You need to protect me during this time," Li Mo commanded Shigure Kira.
Shigure Kira didn't act presumptuously. Instead, she firmly replied, "Okay. I promise you."
"As long as I'm still alive, I won't let those heads get half a step close to you."
Li Mo nodded and said casually, "Thank you."
In the blink of an eye, Li Mo became serious and solemn again.
Shigure Kira gripped the greatsword in her hand and secretly vowed in her heart to protect Li Mo.
She couldn't save everyone, but maybe he could.
That's what Shigure Kira thought.
"Tsuruyo!"
Li Mo, who had entered the auditorium, shouted loudly. Saori Tsuruyo immediately rushed out from the crowd and came before Li Mo.
Saori Tsuruyo nervously replied, "Big brother, I'm here."
Li Mo stretched out his hand and pointed at the black coffin. "Now, immediately use the thermometer to test the temperature near the coffin, the spirit tablet, and the grave incense."
"Big brother, I..."
"What's wrong?"
Saori Tsuruyo pursed her small lips and mustered her courage to say, "Big brother, when you and the big sister went to the auditorium entrance earlier, I already finished measuring those. Only the thermometer near the spirit tablet showed a decrease in temperature."
The spirit tablet?
Li Mo was somewhat surprised. It wasn't the black coffin. Clearly, the black coffin, which symbolized ominousness and great misfortune, seemed more like the source of some kind of bizarre event.
But since the thermometer was giving this indication, Li Mo didn't hesitate. He casually patted Saori Tsuruyo's head.
