Chapter 22: 22. Tales of the Living world

The Cat Incident

It was late afternoon, and the village market was winding down for the day. Merchants packed their goods as the sun dipped toward the horizon. Musashi and Arasaka stood on the rooftop of a small shrine, scanning for any spiritual disturbances.

"Do you smell that?" Arasaka sniffed the air, his eyes narrowing.

Musashi didn't glance at him. "What?"

"Fish. Someone's grilling fish down there. I could have a little taste?"

Musashi rolled his eyes. "Focus."

Before Arasaka could continue his musings, a faint spiritual signature flickered to life near the village outskirts. They both turned their heads, locking onto the source.

"Let's go," Musashi said, leaping from the rooftop.

The signature led them to a small alley between two wooden buildings. They found a black cat crouched near a broken crate, its fur bristling as it hissed at the air.

"Strange," Arasaka muttered, kneeling to examine the cat. "It's reacting to something."

Suddenly, a hollow materialized—a small, wiry creature with spindly limbs and glowing red eyes. It lunged at the cat, but Musashi intercepted it with a single slash of his zanpakutō, forcing it back.

"You're targeting a cat?" Arasaka scoffed. "That's low, even for a hollow."

The hollow snarled, its clawed hands reaching for Musashi, who dodged effortlessly. Arasaka raised his palm, reiatsu swirling around his fingertips.

"Bakudō #4: Hainawa!"

A glowing rope of energy shot from his hand, binding the hollow in place. Musashi wasted no time, delivering a powerful strike that shattered the creature's mask.

As the hollow disintegrated, the black cat relaxed, its fur smoothing as it meowed softly.

"Poor thing," Arasaka said, scratching behind the cat's ears. "It probably didn't even know what was after it."

The cat purred in response, then trotted off toward the village shrine.

"That's one life saved," Arasaka said, watching it disappear. "Wonder if it'll thank us in its own way."

Musashi gave him a sidelong glance. "You're talking nonsense again."

Arasaka's Lantern Incident

Later that evening, the village was illuminated by lanterns. The locals were celebrating a festival, their laughter and music filling the air. From their perch atop a hill, Musashi and Arasaka observed the festivities.

"You ever wonder what it's like to just… join them?" Arasaka asked, sitting cross-legged with his zanpakutō resting on his lap.

"No," Musashi replied curtly.

"You're no fun," Arasaka grumbled. He stood, stretching, then pointed toward the village. "Let's check the perimeter. You know, make sure no hollows are gate-crashing the party."

Musashi nodded, and they descended into the village.

As they walked along the outskirts, Arasaka paused in front of a cluster of hanging lanterns. "These things are fascinating. Humans come up with the weirdest ways to light things up."

He reached out to touch one, but as he did, his reiatsu caused the lantern to burst into flames.

"Whoa!" Arasaka jumped back, waving his hands frantically.

"Idiot," Musashi muttered, stepping forward. With a precise flick of his hand, he doused the flames by redirecting the wind with his reiatsu.

Arasaka grinned sheepishly. "Guess I overdid it."

The nearby villagers, oblivious to the shinigami's presence, noticed the extinguished lantern and began whispering about mischievous spirits.

"You've just started a local legend," Musashi said dryly.

"Hey, maybe they'll leave offerings for us!" Arasaka laughed.

Musashi shook his head, walking away. "Let's keep moving before you cause more trouble."

The Hollow in the Forest

As the festival continued, Musashi and Arasaka ventured deeper into the forest at the edge of town. The air was heavy with spiritual energy, and both shinigami were on high alert.

"I don't like this," Arasaka said, his usual humor absent. "Feels like something big is coming."

Musashi's hand tightened around the hilt of his zanpakutō. "Stay focused."

The trees around them began to sway unnaturally, their branches twisting as if alive. A massive hollow emerged from the shadows, its mask resembling a snarling beast. It let out a deafening roar, shaking the ground beneath their feet.

Arasaka took a step forward, reiatsu flaring. "Alright, big guy. Let's dance."

The hollow lunged at him, but Arasaka flash-stepped out of the way, countering with a precise Hadō spell.

"Hadō #58: Tenran!"

A spiraling gust of wind erupted from his outstretched palm, slamming into the hollow and forcing it back.

Musashi seized the opportunity, closing the distance with a flash of his own. His blade gleamed in the moonlight as he struck, each slash deliberate and powerful.

The hollow retaliated with a swipe of its massive claws, forcing Musashi to backflip out of range. Arasaka followed up with a Bakudō spell.

"Bakudō #61: Rikujōkōrō!"

Six glowing rods of light pinned the hollow in place, immobilizing it.

"Finish it!" Arasaka shouted.

Musashi nodded, his reiatsu surging as he delivered a devastating blow that split the hollow in two.

As the creature disintegrated, the forest fell silent once more.

Musashi sheathed his zanpakutō. "Let's return to the village. We're not done yet."

A New Threat

As Musashi and Arasaka approached the edge of the village, a faint spiritual energy caught their attention. Emerging from the shadows was a young boy, no older than ten. His translucent form flickered faintly, and his wide, frightened eyes darted around as if searching for something—or someone.

"Help me," he whispered, his voice trembling.

Arasaka crouched to the boy's level, his expression softening. "What's wrong, kid? Are you lost?"

The boy nodded hesitantly. "Something… something's coming for me. It's been following me ever since I got here." He clutched his chest, where a faint chain dangled from his torso.

Musashi's sharp gaze flickered toward the horizon. "He's being hunted. A hollow will come soon."

Arasaka placed a reassuring hand on the boy's shoulder, even though the gesture offered no physical comfort. "Don't worry. We'll protect you."

The boy seemed to relax slightly, though his form still trembled.

"First things first," Arasaka said, rising. He gestured to Musashi, who stepped forward and unsheathed his zanpakutō.

The boy's eyes widened at the gleaming blade. "W-what are you going to do?"

Musashi's voice was calm but firm. "You're a wandering soul. If we don't send you to the Soul Society now, you'll remain here, vulnerable to hollows. This is called Konso. It won't hurt."

The boy hesitated, looking between the two shinigami. "And I'll be safe there?"

Arasaka nodded with a gentle smile. "Safe and sound. There's nothing to be scared of."

The boy gulped, then gave a small nod. Musashi stepped closer, resting the hilt of his zanpakutō against the boy's forehead. A soft, golden glow radiated from the blade as the spirit's form grew brighter.

"Thank you," the boy murmured before his body dissolved into shimmering particles of light, vanishing into the night sky.

Arasaka exhaled, watching the boy's soul ascend. "Another life given peace. Feels good, doesn't it?"

Musashi sheathed his zanpakutō. "There's no time for that. The hollow hunting him will still come, and now it'll be looking for other prey."

Arasaka's demeanor turned serious. "You're right. Let's move."

The pair didn't have to wait long. As they approached the village square, a sharp, chilling breeze swept through the air, causing the festival lanterns to flicker. Though the villagers remained oblivious, continuing their celebrations, Musashi and Arasaka sensed the hollow's presence immediately.

"There," Musashi said, pointing toward a shadowy figure lurking behind one of the stalls.

The hollow emerged from the darkness—a grotesque, snake-like creature with elongated limbs and a jagged mask. It let out a guttural hiss, its red eyes locking onto the cluster of festival-goers.

"Not on our watch," Arasaka muttered, his reiatsu flaring.

The hollow lunged toward the crowd, but Arasaka was faster. He flash-stepped into its path, raising his palm.

"Hadō #31: Shakkahō!"

A crimson orb of energy shot from his hand, striking the hollow in the chest and forcing it back.

"Draw it away from the villagers," Musashi commanded, his zanpakutō already in hand.

Arasaka nodded, firing another Shakkahō to lead the hollow toward the outskirts of the village. Musashi followed closely, his movements swift and deliberate.

Once they reached the forest's edge, the hollow turned, enraged. It lashed out with its tail, forcing Arasaka to leap back.

"Slippery one, isn't it?" Arasaka quipped, dodging another attack.

"Stop playing around," Musashi said, darting forward. His blade gleamed in the moonlight as he delivered a precise strike to the hollow's side, eliciting a pained roar.

The hollow retaliated with a flurry of swipes, but Musashi parried each one with ease. Meanwhile, Arasaka circled behind it, preparing another spell.

"Bakudō #9: Geki!" he shouted, and the hollow froze in place, its body outlined in a red glow.

"Finish it," Arasaka said.

Musashi didn't hesitate. With a powerful swing of his zanpakutō, he cleaved through the hollow's mask. The creature let out a final, guttural cry before disintegrating into nothingness.

---

As the forest grew silent once more, Arasaka leaned against a tree, catching his breath. "Well, that was fun. Remind me to thank that kid for giving us the heads-up."

Musashi sheathed his blade, his expression unreadable. "He's already moved on. There's no need for thanks."

Arasaka tilted his head, a smirk playing on his lips. "You're such a killjoy. Can't you ever just enjoy a victory?"

Musashi glanced at him, then turned toward the village lights in the distance. "Our work here isn't done."

Arasaka sighed, pushing himself off the tree. "Yeah, yeah. Let's head back before another hollow decides to crash the festival."

The two shinigami made their way back to the rooftops overlooking the village. Below, the festival continued, the villagers laughing and dancing without a care in the world.

"They'll never know what almost happened tonight," Arasaka said, his tone unusually contemplative.

Musashi remained silent for a moment, then spoke softly. "That's how it should be."

Arasaka chuckled, his usual humor returning. "Yeah, you're right. But still, a little recognition wouldn't hurt."

Musashi didn't respond, but a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
