Chapter 9: Chapter 9
Anakin sat in Dr. Nakamura's waiting room, making his All Might figure hover a few inches above his palm. In the week since his quirk manifested, he'd gotten better at controlling small objects, though anything heavier than a toy still gave him trouble.
"Remember what we talked about," Megumi said softly. "No showing off until Dr. Nakamura asks you to demonstrate."
Anakin let the figure drop back into his hand with a sigh. The waiting room was different from their last visit - this time there were other kids testing newly awakened quirks. A girl about his age was making tiny sparks dance between her fingers, while a boy in the corner had skin that kept changing texture like different types of rocks.
Dr. Nakamura's kaleidoscope eyes lit up when she called them into her office. "I heard the exciting news! Ready to show me what you can do?"
Anakin nodded eagerly. They'd brought a variety of objects for testing - from feather-light paper clips to heavier items like books. Dr. Nakamura set them on her desk in order of weight.
"Let's start small," she said, placing a paper clip in front of him. "Just like you've been practicing at home."
Anakin held out his hand, his face scrunching in concentration. The paper clip lifted smoothly into the air, dancing in circles just like he'd practiced.
"Excellent control," Dr. Nakamura noted, her eyes shifting to an analytical blue. "How does it feel when you move objects?"
"Like... like invisible hands," Anakin explained. "But not really hands. More like..." He struggled to find the words.
"Like energy?" Dr. Nakamura suggested.
"Yeah! Like I can feel the energy around stuff, and I can push it or pull it."
They moved through progressively heavier objects. Anakin could lift a pencil easily, though keeping it steady took more focus. A small book made him sweat, and he could only lift it an inch or two before dropping it.
"Very interesting," Dr. Nakamura muttered, taking notes. "The quirk seems to affect all types of matter equally, regardless of material. It's pure telekinetic energy."
"Is that good?" Megumi asked.
"It's fascinating. Most telekinetic quirks have specific limitations - only affecting certain materials, or requiring physical contact. This appears to be a more... universal ability." She turned to Anakin. "Have you noticed being able to do anything else? Maybe sensing things without seeing them?"
Anakin thought about it. "Sometimes I know when Mom's about to call me for dinner, even when I can't hear her. And yesterday I knew Grandpa was coming over before he knocked."
Dr. Nakamura's eyes sparkled with interest. "Enhanced spatial awareness and possibly some precognitive abilities. The quirk seems to affect your perception as well as your telekinetic capabilities."
She ran through more tests - having Anakin try to sense objects hidden behind screens, testing his reaction time to falling objects, measuring how long he could maintain his telekinetic grip before tiring.
"Well," she said finally, "I think we can officially register your quirk. What would you like to call it?"
"The Force!" Anakin said immediately.
Dr. Nakamura smiled. "Simple and descriptive. I like it." She turned to Megumi. "The quirk registration office will need a technical description. I would classify it as an emitter-type quirk that allows the user to manipulate physical objects through psychic energy, with additional sensory enhancement capabilities."
She handed Megumi a tablet with forms to fill out. "Given the quirk's strength and potential for growth, I'd recommend weekly counseling sessions. We can work on control exercises, safety guidelines, and gradually increase the weight limits he can handle."
"Are there any safety concerns we should know about?" Megumi asked, thinking about preschool.
"The usual precautions for telekinetic quirks - no using it on people without permission, no lifting anything that could be dangerous if dropped, and always having supervision during practice sessions." Dr. Nakamura smiled at Anakin. "But from what I've seen today, you're already being very careful with your power."
Anakin beamed at the praise. "Can I practice with bigger stuff soon?"
"Let's master the small things first. Remember what I said about quirks being like muscles? You need to build up strength gradually."
She gave them a set of exercises to practice at home - concentration games, weight-training with safe objects, and meditation techniques to help Anakin better understand his connection to the energy he was manipulating.
"One last thing," Dr. Nakamura said as they were leaving. "Given the unique nature of this quirk, would you be open to having some of my colleagues observe future sessions? This could be valuable for quirk research."
Megumi hesitated, remembering the strange circumstances of Anakin's conception. "Let me think about it."
On the train ride home, Anakin practiced one of his new exercises - trying to sense how many people were in their car without looking around. His face was screwed up in concentration, reminding Megumi of when he was a baby trying to figure out how to stack blocks.
"Fourteen people," he announced finally. "And someone has a dog in their bag."
Megumi did a quick count. "Thirteen people, but you're right about the dog. That's pretty impressive for your first try."
"Dr. Nakamura says I'm doing really good."
"She's right. You're being very responsible with your quirk."
Anakin fidgeted with his All Might figure. "Mom? Do you think... do you think I could be a hero with this quirk?"
Megumi pulled him close. "I think you could be anything you want to be. But let's focus on mastering the basics first, okay?"
"Like lifting paper clips?"
"Like lifting paper clips. Then books. Then who knows? Maybe one day you'll be lifting villains."
This made him giggle. He spent the rest of the ride quietly practicing with his action figure, making it float just above his lap where other passengers wouldn't notice.
When they got home, Anakin rushed to show his grandfather the new exercises. Ben had stopped by to hear about the appointment, and he watched proudly as Anakin demonstrated his improved control.
"Next week she says I can try lifting two things at once!" Anakin explained excitedly.
"Before you know it, you'll be helping me move furniture," Ben joked.
Later, after Anakin had gone to bed, Megumi shared Dr. Nakamura's request about the research observation.
"What do you think?" she asked her father.
Ben considered it carefully. "It could help other kids with similar quirks in the future. But I understand your hesitation, given everything."
"I just don't want him to feel like a research subject. He's already so excited about his quirk, about being normal..."
"Then we make sure any observation is on his terms." Ben squeezed her shoulder. "He's a strong kid, Megumi. And he's got a great support system. Whatever you decide, we'll make it work."
Megumi peaked into Anakin's room, where he was sound asleep, his All Might figure floating peacefully above his pillow. In just a week, her son had gone from wondering if he'd ever get a quirk to having one of the most interesting powers his counselor had seen.
