Chapter 45
Hello everyone, It’s VarieTL. Thanks to the support in my Ko-Fi there will be 2 extra chapter today. Thank You for your support!
The investigation into Alexander Reinhardt, the Pope’s own son and nominal bodyguard to the saint candidate, proceeded swiftly. Every nun who had been assisting him was apprehended without exception, and although the high priest was not detained, he could not escape the repercussions.
Despite the Starlight Order’s influence, which rivaled that of the emperor, the evidence was irrefutable this time. The Order could only express their regret over the situation. Alexander’s body bore traces of demonic influence, and it was the high priest of the Order who had examined him and cleaned his quarters. Just as I had planned, they had no way to deny the evidence.
This also lent credibility to my claim that they had pre-emptively hidden demonic concealment devices. While it would be difficult to find them if the succubus queen had ordered their concealment directly, it provided enough circumstantial evidence.
After finishing my testimony, I found myself back in the Chairman’s office, leaning against the sofa opposite her. I was still recovering from the near-death experience of almost suffocating in her embrace. Who would have guessed the Chairman had that side to her?
According to the perpetrator herself, she couldn’t help it because I seemed to be struggling to maintain my composure, though I repeatedly insisted I was genuinely fine.
‘She didn’t listen at all.’
Catching my glare, the Chairman awkwardly cleared her throat and moved on to the main topic.
“The situation has been resolved smoothly, just as you predicted.”
“Is that so?”
“The bodyguard they sent was beguiled by a succubus and committed such acts. The saint candidate strongly insisted that she could no longer trust the Order’s security. The Order is in no position to refute this claim. As a result, the saint candidate can stay at the academy for as long as she wishes, and we are not being held accountable for killing that man.”
“That’s a relief. At least those bastards won’t be able to run amok anymore.”
Although it seemed unimaginable that anyone could hold a dragon accountable, the Starlight Order had accomplished more formidable feats. Just two days ago, Alexander had demanded that the Chairman meet him. Moreover, I had once been summoned to the royal palace due to a demonic incursion in the Bellium Forest.
“Though we have had our share of disgraceful incidents in the past, we have managed to avert them without harm, thanks to you. The Order seems to have no rebuttal regarding this matter.”
This incident was far more severe than the previous demonic incursions. There’s a world of difference between a demonic invasion and collusion with demons.
“Lastly, I have something to tell you.”
The Chairman leaned slightly forward, looking at me with utmost seriousness.
“Although the plan worked out this time, try to avoid such actions in the future. If it becomes necessary, please discuss it with us beforehand. The saint candidate was very worried about you.”
“…Yes, I will keep that in mind.”
“I was equally worried about you, so be sure to remember this. Do you know how shocked I was to see two of your fingers severed? I thought that you had been overpowered by him.”
“I would never be overpowered by someone like him—”
The Chairman raised a hand, stopping my words. “I understand your strength and skill, but such injuries are a cause for concern. We cannot afford to lose you.”
I nodded. “I understand, and I appreciate your concern. I will be more cautious in the future.”
“Good. Now, take some rest. You’ve done well, Mira.”
As I stood to leave, I could feel the weight of the past few days lifting slightly. The Chairman’s unexpected display of concern, while overwhelming, was also comforting in its own way. It reminded me that, despite the challenges and dangers, there were people here who cared deeply about my well-being.
Exiting the Chairman’s office, I found Rosalia waiting for me, her face a mix of relief and residual concern.
“You really had me worried there,” she said, her voice softening.
I smiled reassuringly. “I’m fine, really. Let’s just focus on what comes next.”
With the immediate crisis resolved, it was time to prepare for whatever lay ahead. The battle against the demonic forces was far from over, and I would need every bit of strength and support to face it.
But for now, at least, we had won a crucial victory.
“Are you trying to split hairs right now? You should know what I’m talking about.”
“No, I’m sorry.”
I explained to Rosalia and the Chairman that I had bitten off my own finger to create the impression that I had been attacked. Without this information, they would genuinely believe I had been assaulted.
Upon hearing this, Rosalia hit my chest repeatedly, calling me crazy, while the Chairman scolded me with a stern face I had never seen before. I explained that it was a planned move, assuming I would receive treatment, but they wouldn’t listen.
To be honest, I was somewhat relieved that Priscilla hadn’t witnessed the scene. If she had seen it, it would have caused an uproar.
“Well then, it’s time to deal with the last remaining issue.”
The Chairman snapped her fingers. Nika, looking disheveled, appeared out of nowhere and tumbled onto the floor in the middle of the room. She looked even more pitiful than the last time I saw her.
“Didn’t you hand her over to the Empire?”
“She’s the one who tried to take you to the Queen and failed, isn’t she? I thought it would be better for you to deal with her yourself rather than leave it to the Empire, so I kept it a secret.”
The Chairman grabbed Nika by the hair and dragged her over to me, throwing her down on the floor. Her body was covered in dust, and her wrists, which had been pierced and fixed with an iron spike, hadn’t received proper treatment, with dried blood crusting over the wounds.
“Ugh… ugh…”
“She doesn’t look so good.”
“You’ve got a keen eye. She used up all the energy she received from the Queen to induce berserk mode, drawing on her own energy as well. She’s in a state of extreme starvation, like a human who hasn’t eaten in days. If left alone, she won’t last long and will starve to death.”
“P-please… please save me… I answered all your questions and created the berserk mode for you…”
Nika, hearing that she might starve to death, desperately lifted her head and pleaded with tearful eyes. Just looking at her made me feel a twinge of pity. After all, we had exploited her quite a bit.
But she’s still a demon, and I had no intention of showing mercy. The Chairman growled.
“Did you just ask to be saved? Don’t be ridiculous. When the humans you drained begged for their lives, did you spare them? You demons show no mercy to humans, so why should we—”
“I’ve never drained anyone!!!!”
Nika shouted desperately. Her claim that she had never drained anyone made the Chairman’s face contort with anger.
“What did you just say? That you’ve never drained anyone? A succubus saying such nonsense? Do you really think such a lie would—”
“It’s true! It’s true! I’m called a succubus, but I’ve lived my whole life in the gutters! I’ve never drained anyone, never killed a human or monster! I’ve never even met a male or female! I’ve just been scavenging leftover energy to survive!”
“……”
“I don’t even know why I was chosen for such an important mission! The Queen just called me one day and told me to infiltrate Bellium Academy and bring back someone named Mira Crate, promising to raise my rank and treat me like a real succubus if I succeeded… So I came here… but now… huu…”
Tears began to well up in Nika’s eyes. It was hard to believe she was lying. The Chairman, too, seemed taken aback, likely because Nika’s story sounded genuine.
“I don’t want to die like this… Not as a pathetic succubus who never even drained anyone… I’ve been struggling to survive, thinking I’d get a chance someday… huuu…”
Her voice was filled with sorrow, but due to her hunger, it was weak and feeble. The Chairman turned to me.
“It seems she might not be lying. From the beginning, I found it strange that the amount of energy contained within her was absurdly low. If what she says is true, you are witnessing a very rare occurrence. A succubus who has never drained anyone—I’ve never seen such a sight myself.”
“Is it that uncommon?”
“You can say that again. For a succubus, draining someone is akin to, or even more fundamental than, a human having a meal. Typically, they perform their first drain within a week of birth, under their mother’s guidance, targeting either a monster or a human male. Succubi are born fully matured as females, after all. Yet, she claims to have no experience…”
The Chairman paused, furrowing her brow.
“It is extremely rare, but it seems likely that her mother died before she could teach her how to drain. How that happened, I do not know. Succubi usually have strong bonds with each other due to their low status among demons.”
“Sniff… Hic…”
Nika’s head drooped, seemingly too exhausted to even cry properly. After a moment of contemplation, I spoke.
“That’s quite fascinating.”
“What is?”
“If what she’s saying is true, then despite her incompetence or other reasons, they sent a succubus who never drained anyone and has no significant abilities, armed with immense energy, to infiltrate the academy guarded by you, Chairman. And they even used the Pope’s son as bait. If their goal was truly to capture me, wouldn’t they have sent the best succubus who could evade your senses?”
Someone like Roxanna, for instance. Although they might have refrained from using Roxanna due to her important role at the academy.
“That’s not entirely unfounded.”
The Chairman appeared deep in thought. I, too, was pondering, but for a slightly different reason. While the Chairman was considering the validity of my point, I was trying to figure out the Queen’s motives.
And I came to a strange conclusion.
‘What if she just threw in a wild card, hoping for the best but not expecting much?’
That would explain why they chose an inexperienced succubus. They didn’t expect success from the start and would just abandon her if things went south.
‘But why?’
The reason behind expending immense energy on such an experiment remained a mystery. Especially against a human who had humiliated them by resisting pheromones twice.
“So, what should we do about this…?”
As I contemplated, the Chairman looked at Nika with a significantly softened expression. The fact that she had never killed a human seemed to have made a significant impact.
“You’re in charge of her fate. Do you have any particular plans?”
“No, I don’t. I didn’t expect to be responsible for this succubus in the first place.”
“That’s understandable. Hmm…”
Nika, sensing this might be her last chance, desperately pleaded with her eyes. However, it didn’t seem to affect the Chairman at all.
“Indeed. Perhaps you should consider raising her.”
“What…?”
I looked at the Chairman in surprise. She grabbed Nika by the scruff and lightly shook her.
“If she had ever killed a human, I would have recommended repaying her in kind. But since she hasn’t, it feels ambiguous to kill her. This decision is up to you, who almost got taken by the Queen because of her. And you also seem hesitant to kill her, am I right?”
“To be honest, yes.”
“That succubus did try to take me to the Queen, but there’s a possibility she was assigned to a mission that was ultimately doomed to fail. If that’s the case, outright killing her seemed ambiguous.”
“That’s why I’m saying this. If you wish, there’s a way to place obedience spells on her head, heart, and womb, so don’t worry about rebellion. A succubus who has never drained anyone is a rare being that money can’t buy, so you won’t regret it.”
“What if I refuse?”
“Then she’ll have to be killed. I have no need for her, and there’s even less reason to let a demon like her go free.”
At the mention of being killed, Nika trembled, looking up at me with a pitiful gaze. It seemed like she was pleading for acceptance.
“…Understood.”
Someday, when I meet the Queen, I’ll ask why they sent such a succubus and reconsider my decision. As I gave my answer, the headmaster chuckled.
“It’s settled then. Come closer, and I’ll teach you how to engrave obedience spells.”
“…I’m the one who will do it?”
“Now that you belong to me, isn’t it natural? The places where the spell will work are as I said, on your head, heart, and womb. The locations for the engravings will be… Yes, between your tongue and chest, and your lower abdomen.”
.
.
.
“Um… Alright. Perfect.”
Beatrice finished cleaning with a sense of satisfaction. Although a month had passed since the young master left for the Bellium Academy, his room still looked as if it were brand new.
She wanted it to be ready for him to use whenever he returned home. Cleaning his room took precedence over cleaning her own room for Beatrice.
While she missed assisting the young master at the academy, she thought it was time for him to leave his mother’s embrace, considering he was already 18 years old.
Of course, the young master’s mother was perfectly fine, but it was a thought that strictly resided in Beatrice’s mind. She couldn’t let the young master hear such words as “I’m glad you have two mothers” again.
“Now then… Oh? Young master?”
Beatrice, who had always kept her communication magic tool close at hand, hurriedly took it out when it emitted a specific pattern. Then, she cleared her throat and answered the call.
“Yes, young master. What is it?”
Returning to her perfectly composed maid persona, Beatrice spoke in an unwavering voice. There was silence from the other end for a while, but Beatrice patiently waited.
“Um, so… It might sound a bit random, but…”
“Don’t worry, please go ahead and tell me. What is it?”
Beatrice wasn’t easily surprised by ordinary matters. No, not just Beatrice, but most of the long-serving servants in the mansion were the same.
After all, wasn’t the young master himself born with his heart stopped, only to be revived later? The servants who had served the Crate family for a long time couldn’t be easily startled by ordinary matters.
“Um, well. So, I know this might seem a bit sudden, but…”
“Please don’t worry, and please tell me. What is it?”
A tiny crack appeared on Beatrice’s face, which seemed unbreakable.
