Chapter 12: Big Brother
Since childhood, Hun Feng and Hun Yu had always been the center of attention during the Soul Clan's bloodline activation ceremonies. Their innate talents and prestigious lineage ensured admiration and envy from their peers.
But everything changed with the emergence of Hun Xiu.
In a single day, Hun Xiu's exceptional performance during the bloodline activation ceremony completely overshadowed them. Their moments of glory turned into mere stepping stones for Hun Xiu's rise, fueling deep resentment in their hearts.
Despite being only seven or eight years old, Hun Feng and Hun Yu were far more precocious than average children, as was typical among the ancient and powerful Soul Clan. Here on the Douqi Continent, where strength dictated respect, maturity often came early.
Hun Yu cast a sidelong glance at the corner where Hun Xiu sat quietly. His fists clenched in frustration. "Hun Feng," he hissed, "what should we do? I can't stand him!"
Hun Feng shared the sentiment, nodding with a smirk. "Neither can I. Why don't you go show him his place? Teach him a lesson."
Hun Yu's eyes lit up at the suggestion. "That's a great idea!"
Without hesitation, he began marching toward Hun Xiu.
But Hun Feng, watching him go, sneered inwardly. Idiot. Hun Xiu reached the Dou Ling level yesterday. You're only a Dou Shi. You'll only embarrass yourself.
After taking a few steps, Hun Yu paused. A realization dawned on him, and he turned back to Hun Feng with a sheepish smile. "Wait… Didn't Hun Xiu just become a Dou Ling yesterday?"
Hun Feng raised an eyebrow. "So?"
Hun Yu sighed. "I'm just a Dou Shi. If I try to fight him, I'll be the one getting taught a lesson." He shook his head. "Forget it."
Hun Feng chuckled to himself, At least this idiot has some sense after all.
The tense atmosphere of the square shifted as a voice cried out, "Look! The Soul Ring is heading toward Hun Xiu!"
All eyes turned to Hun Xiu.
The Soul Ring—a mark of distinction among the younger generation—had activated a ninth-grade bloodline. While not as prestigious as a tenth or eleventh-grade bloodline, the ninth grade was still a rarity and a symbol of excellence.
For most of the children gathered, their bloodlines were of the seventh or eighth grade. Some didn't even reach that level, possessing only fifth or sixth-grade Dou Di bloodlines.
Hun Yu stared at the glowing Soul Ring approaching Hun Xiu. "Why is it heading toward him?" he muttered in disbelief.
Hun Huan'er, a young girl clad in a pink dress, stepped forward with the Soul Ring in hand. Her delicate features and porcelain-like complexion made her look like a living doll. Her arrival caused a stir among the crowd.
Hun Xiu, leaning casually against a wall, opened his eyes as the girl stopped in front of him. He studied her for a moment. "Who are you?" he asked, his tone calm but distant.
Hun Huan'er hesitated before extending her small hand. "Hello. I know you. You're Hun Xiu, one of the clan leader's sons." She smiled brightly. "My name is Hun Huan'er."
Hun Xiu frowned slightly. "What do you want?"
Her enthusiasm faltered at his cold demeanor. Though embarrassed, Hun Huan'er withdrew her hand. "It's… It's nothing."
Hun Xiu simply shrugged and closed his eyes again, ignoring her presence entirely.
The crowd was stunned into silence.
This wasn't just any girl. Hun Huan'er was considered a "goddess" among the younger generation. For someone like her to personally approach Hun Xiu—and be so casually dismissed—was unthinkable.
Many onlookers felt a twinge of jealousy. Most of them wouldn't dare speak to Hun Huan'er, let alone treat her with such indifference.
"How arrogant…" someone muttered, though no one dared confront Hun Xiu directly.
Hun Feng and Hun Yu, however, saw an opportunity.
The Confrontation
"Hun Xiu, don't you think you're being a bit rude?" Hun Feng called out, walking toward him with Hun Yu in tow.
Hun Xiu opened his eyes and glanced lazily at them. "Hun Feng, if I recall correctly, I was born a day before you. Shouldn't you be calling me 'Big Brother Xiu'?"
Hun Feng froze, momentarily flustered. Technically, Hun Xiu was right. But with so many people watching, he refused to back down. "Hun Xiu," he said, forcing a smirk, "you think being born a day earlier makes you my elder? That's ridiculous."
"One day is enough," Hun Xiu replied coolly. "Ask your father if you don't believe me."
Hun Feng's face darkened as quiet laughter rippled through the crowd.
