Carrying a Jurassic on me

Chapter 5: Chapter 5 Making Money_1

Xu Xiaoyan reached out to touch Yan Xiaofei's forehead, then touching her own with furrowed brows, she looked lovely. "Yan Xiaofei, you're not actually a fool, are you?"

People said Yan Fei was stupid, but Xu Xiaoyan, who had played with him since childhood, never thought he was. Apart from sometimes pretending to be a fool, his brain actually worked no slower than anyone else's.

Her full name was Xu Xing, but besides Yan Fei, no one called her Xu Xiaoyan. When she was young, people said she was destined to be the wife of the fool Yan. She didn't know how it started, but Yan Fei began calling her Xu Xiaoyan, and to this day, she still didn't understand why.

Looking at Yan Fei's serious appearance, she was really a bit scared: Did he actually turn into a fool!

Yan Fei lifted his head and saw her frightened expression. Suddenly, he chuckled and began to eat his scrambled eggs enthusiastically. "Eat up, there won't be any left soon. I was just messing with you."

Xu Xiaoyan nodded, and after a couple of bites of her food, she raised her head and said seriously, "When we were young, you used to call me auntie!"

Yan Fei drank his medicine water, his mouth full of scrambled eggs, he replied vaguely, "Who said that? You're only five years older than me. Can't I call you aunt instead?"

Xu Xiaoyan laughed, "Let me hear you call me aunt then!"

Yan Fei put his empty bowl down, "Auntie, take your time eating, I'm going to wash dishes...".

As he picked up his bowl and ran off, Xu Xiaoyan stamped her foot and cursed at him.

After fooling around and finishing his meal, sitting alone in the house, Yan Fei started seriously thinking about ways to make money. Without realizing it, he was actually just looking for something to do to distract himself from thinking about the possibility of turning into a dinosaur.

After a while, he felt something was wrong.

Why was he so hungry?

These days, apart from dinosaur eggs and dinosaur meat, there was really nothing else to eat. So, with a heavy heart, he ran back into the cave, picked up the leftover meat and carried it back home.

He pondered while gathering firewood, and while eating.

Before he knew it, he ate all the meat. It gave him quite a shock.

Without consciously thinking about why he was suddenly so hungry, he continued thinking about making money.

It seemed more like he was daydreaming than actual brainstorming. After contemplating for a while, he decided he needed to ask someone for advice.

His relatives living in the town, aside from Uncle Ming who gave him money last time, was a distant uncle who worked at the local police station. They weren't very close relatives, but because he interacted with them regularly, they felt closer than his other kin.

It was very hot these few days, everyone was easily irritated.

The police officers at the Sancha River town police station were no different. On this hot day, they received an urgent notice from the upper management. The elderly stationmaster was partially retired due to illness. The new deputy stationmaster, who lacked experience, received the notice and started to keep everyone busy at the station.

Lin Baoguo was also in the same situation. Early in the morning, after attending house chores and his pregnant wife, he had breakfast and pedaled his way around the countryside. He rode through three different villages back to back and returned so exhausted that he couldn't eat his lunch. Drinking cold water made him feel full.

As he prepared the documents in the afternoon, Yan Fei swayed into the police station.

After entering, Yan Fei poured himself a cup of cold boiled water and sat there watching Lin Baoguo busily writing and sketching.

After a while, Lin Baoguo sensed something was odd: this kid's visit was too quiet today, was there some sort of big issue?

Looking at Yan Fei's absent-mindedness, Lin Baoguo was a bit worried: "Xiao Fei, what brings you here? Is there something you need?"

As Lin Baoguo put down his pen, Yan Fei came back to his senses: "Uncle Baoguo, what should I do if I want to make money?"

Lin Baoguo finally understood, while rummaging through his pocket he said, "Come on, you want to make money? Did you spend all your money feasting? Here, take five yuan, come back and get more when you've spent it all."

Yan Fei was still wondering why this sounded so familiar when he was handed five yuan.

After thinking for a while, Yan Fei finally remembered why it seemed familiar. The five yuan Uncle Ming gave him was still in his pocket.

"I'm serious about making money—it's not a joke." Yan Fei said indignantly.

"Alright, alright, I believe you," Lin Baoguo resignedly said. "Making money isn't hard. You can go to your grandfather's, clear an empty field, and plant some sweet potatoes. I'm busy here, everyone in the city is trying to catch a criminal. It's very hot outside, don't run around too much. Stay at home if you can, or go soak in the river." Lin Baoguo chuckled and shooed him away.

Plant sweet potatoes?

That seemed like a good idea.

Yan Fei felt like he had a new idea, getting up and muttering to himself, "Working at the police station sure leaves a lot of spare time. Making a big fuss out of arresting a beggar, did he offend you guys or something..."

Watching him walk away, Lin Baoguo was left speechless.

As soon as he left the police station, a child of about the same age came running over. From a distance, he saw Yan Fei and shouted, "Yan Fei, Yan Fei, are you going to watch the movie tonight? They're showing 'The Five Ancestors of Shaolin' tonight. The fighting scenes are amazing!"

Yan Fei didn't need to think twice, "Sure, I'll wait for you at my place tonight to call me. I'll treat you tonight!"

The boy quickly refused, "No, no, my mom says I can't accept your money. How about I treat you instead? My dad secretly gave me some money when he came back yesterday!"

Yan Fei didn't stand on ceremony: "All right then, it's only half a dime anyway. By the way, Yang Qian, where are you headed right now?"

Yang Qian replied: "I was planning to come by your place just now to hang out. You had your door locked."

Yan Fei waved his hand: "I was just about to go back home now, let's go have some fun."

Yang Qian is an only child, with both of his parents working, his father often off on business trips and his mother unable to look after him due to her work. They didn't used to hang out much during their school years. Only when they bumped into each other at a video arcade a few days ago did they start to become more familiar.

The reason for their familiarity could be traced back to the video arcade where they had watched martial arts films. Later on, things not suitable for children started being shown, and the young kids, including them, were expelled by the boss.

They became good friends after only two days of being kicked out together.

As they were walking, Yang Qian shared: "Did you know? I found out what the video arcade plays after we leave. It's some Plum Blossoms film, all the women in it are half-dressed..."

Yan Fei nonchalantly replied: "So what, it's not like you can go in there and suckle."

This joke set the not-so-humorous Yang Qian laughing uncontrollably.

They were children after all, their curiosity piqued especially when it came to matters of the opposite sex, but they were still naive to it all!

Once Yan Fei got home, he began to rummage around in the kitchen, prompting Yang Qian's curiosity: "What are you planning to do, Yan Fei?"

As he was busying himself, Yan Fei responded: "I'm preparing to plant sweet potatoes!"

Yang Qian was puzzled: "Is it the season to plant sweet potatoes? Don't think that just because we don't have a plot, I wouldn't know that it's the season to harvest sweet potato leaves!"

They chatted casually and shortly after, Yan Fei managed to find a heap of sweet potatoes in the kitchen.

These were brought over by his maternal grandfather last time. Yan Fei, who eats meat every day, hadn't gotten around to eating them, and some of them had gone bad after being left for so long.

New sweet potatoes should be coming in soon, and any stored sweet potatoes in the village should be cleared out in preparation for the new harvest.

After separating the good from the bad sweet potatoes and tidying up for a bit, he noticed Yang Qian playing with a pig slicing knife in one moment and a watermelon knife in another.

Seeing Yang Qian waving a knife around and making sound effects, Yan Fei worriedly cautioned: "You should stop that, be careful you hurt yourself. Knives aren't toys."

Yang Qian put down his knife, seemingly revitalized and asked: "Do you know how to? I heard you've been practicing martial arts since you were little."

Yan Fei sheepishly responded: "I do know, but I haven't practiced it in so long."

Upon seeing the look of envy in Yang Qian's eyes, Yan Fei perked up: "Do you know about the Shanglin knife from Tanghe County?"

Yang Qian nodded.

A smug Yan Fei added: "Shanglin Ghost Head Knife, it scared the foes to their core. That's us, the great knife from our Shanglin Village, which is my maternal grandfather's village."

Riding high on the excitement, Yan Fei got up, assumed a pose, and commenced his practice: "This is Shanglin's Liuhe Fist, a foundation martial art skill that we children learn from a young age. Its full name is Xinyi Liuhe Fist."

Yan Fei threw punches as he spoke, and within a short while had finished training, earning a heaping praise from Yang Qian.

Having basked in Yang Qian's lavish compliments, Yan Fei casually continued: "Actually, what I learned was just the fists, but the Guan knife and Ghost Head knife from there are what's famous. The Guan knife is similar to the one wielded by the renowned general Guan Yu. There's still one in our village that was allegedly used in battle, it's 120 catties! The average person can't even lift it, you know. It's incredibly formidable."

The pair indulged in daydreaming for a while, reminiscing about the times when the Shanglin Ghost Head Knife decapitated the little devils during the war. Enthralled, Yan Fei demonstrated several moves, but unfortunately, he had barely learned any.

After a while, Yang Qian hastily scrambled back home, only to come running back after having dinner.

Yan Fei hurriedly ate a few bites before joining him on the way to the video arcade. They watched Hong Xiguan brandishing a versatile steel spear, sweeping across the screen majestically, their blood boiled with anticipation. Even after the film ended, they lingered, reluctant to leave, but they were promptly kicked out by the owner.

Seeing as the video arcade at the town secretly plays adult content exclusively aimed at younger men, the likes of Yan Fei and Yang Qian were firmly kept out. Should word spread, not only would the owner be finished, those who watched would definitely face repercussions too.

On returning home in the evening, Yan Fei immediately set off on the path to becoming "well-off".

He chose a piece of land near the small pond in the center of the town where the sun could reach, planning to use it to plant crops.

He digged a hole in the soil, put in a sweet potato, covered it with soil.

Then he digged another hole, put another sweet potato inside, covered it with soil...

Ideally, he should have covered it with plastic film, but he just used a broken piece of plastic he found at home, a half-hearted attempt similar to a cat covering its feces.

This couldn't exactly be called planting sweet potatoes, more so sprouting.

Once the sweet potatoes inside started to sprout, they could then be split into separate plants for sowing.

It didn't take long for him to finish burying all of them. Then he took some wooden sticks and circled the area with them, more for marking territory rather than offering any actual protection. He had long figured out a plan to keep the dinosaurs away.
