Caught in a Hero Summoning: The Calm Life of a Plant Mage

Chapter 5: The Search for Water

Carter and Ivy leaned back in their respective spots after finishing their meal, both of them dramatically full and satisfied. Carter let out a content sigh, rubbing his stomach. "Man, Ivy," he said, glancing at the glowing green fox curled up on the floor. "That was surprisingly good. Who knew Forest Serpent could taste that amazing? It's all about the seasoning, I guess."

Ivy chirped happily, her tail wagging as she rolled onto her back. Carter chuckled. "You liked it too, huh? I mean, I saw the way you inhaled your portion. Don't think I've ever seen you eat that fast."

Ivy let out another cheerful noise, almost as if she was agreeing with him. Carter leaned forward in his chair, resting his elbows on his knees. "Alright, I'll admit it. We make a pretty good team when it comes to foraging and cooking. Maybe we'll open a little inn someday. What do you think, Ivy? Carter and Ivy's Cozy Retreat?"

Ivy chirped and did a small hop in place, making Carter laugh. "I'll take that as a yes."

He glanced over at the balcony window, noticing the sunlight streaming in. The sky was a clear, vibrant blue, with the forest bathed in golden light. "Wow," Carter said softly. "It's still such a beautiful day out. Would be a shame to waste it cooped up inside."

Turning back to Ivy, he smiled. "What do you say we go look for some water? The garden's gonna need it, and I'm kind of curious to see if there's a stream or a river nearby."

Ivy tilted her head, her ears twitching as she listened. Carter raised an eyebrow. "You know where water is, don't you?"

Ivy chirped again, nodding enthusiastically. Carter grinned. "I knew it. You're full of surprises, aren't you? Alright, lead the way, Ivy. Let's go find that water source."

With Ivy bounding ahead, Carter followed her out of the treehouse and into the forest. The sunlight filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground as they walked. Ivy moved with confidence, occasionally glancing back at Carter to make sure he was keeping up.

"You're pretty sure of yourself, huh?" Carter said, watching Ivy's glowing fur shimmer in the sunlight. "I mean, you've lived in these woods long enough to know your way around, so I'm trusting you on this."

Ivy chirped in response, her steps quick and lively. Carter smiled, his mind already turning over ideas. "If we find a stream or a river, we'll need to figure out how to get the water back to the garden. Buckets would work for now, but that's not exactly efficient. Maybe I could use my Verdant Architect skill to build a system of pipes or channels. Something simple, but effective."

As they walked, Carter continued brainstorming. "Or maybe I could create some kind of reservoir near the garden. If we store enough water there, it'd save us from having to go back and forth all the time. Hmm… I wonder if there's a way to enchant something to bring water automatically."

Ivy let out an excited noise, drawing Carter's attention. He looked up to see her standing on the edge of a small slope, her tail wagging as she chirped again. Carter hurried over and peered down. Below them, a crystal-clear stream wound its way through the forest, the water sparkling in the sunlight.

"Well, would you look at that," Carter said, a wide grin spreading across his face. "Nice work, Ivy. You've got a real knack for this."

Ivy hopped down the slope, chirping happily as she approached the water. Carter followed, crouching by the stream to scoop some water into his hand. "It's perfect," he said. "Clean, clear, and close enough to the treehouse to make it work. This is exactly what we needed."

He sat back on his heels, looking at Ivy. "Alright, next step is figuring out how to transport this water efficiently. I'll admit, I'm not an engineer, but I'm pretty good at figuring things out. What do you think? Buckets for now, or should we try something more creative?"

Ivy tilted her head, then chirped as if to say, "Why not both?" Carter laughed. "Fair enough. We'll start simple and see where it goes. For now, though, let's head back and start putting some of these ideas into action."

With one last look at the stream, Carter stood and began walking back toward the treehouse, Ivy trotting happily by his side. "Thanks for showing me the way, Ivy," he said, scratching her behind the ears. "You're the best partner a guy could ask for." Ivy chirped in agreement, her glowing fur catching the sunlight as they made their way home.

Carter and Ivy made their way back to the treehouse, the sun dipping lower in the sky as they stepped inside. The warm, glowing lights of the treehouse greeted them, and they both let out contented sighs as they settled into the living room. Carter flopped onto his favorite chair, while Ivy curled up on a cushion nearby, her tail wagging lazily.

"Alright," Carter said, reaching for the teapot on the nearby table. He poured himself a steaming cup of tea, taking a sip as he leaned back. "We found the water. Now comes the hard part… getting it all the way over here."

He stared up at the ceiling, his mind racing. "Buckets would work for now, but that's gonna get old real fast. I need something better. A pipeline, maybe? Or a magical water conduit? I mean, I've got that Verdant Architect skill. Maybe I can use it to build something useful."

Ivy chirped softly, watching him intently. Carter smiled, glancing over at her. "You're good at finding water, Ivy. Maybe you've got some ideas too?"

Ivy tilted her head, her glowing fur shimmering faintly in the warm light. Carter laughed, taking another sip of tea. "Yeah, I didn't think so. This one's all on me."

As he thought, he suddenly caught a whiff of something unpleasant. He sniffed the air, then himself, grimacing. "Ugh, okay. That's me. I smell like… well, a day spent running around the woods. I really need a shower."

He sat up straighter, tapping his chin. "Actually, that gives me an idea. If I'm going to figure out how to get water to the garden, why not bring it into the house too? A proper water system. Something that connects to the garden and lets me set up a shower or even a sink."

Ivy let out an excited chirp, hopping onto his lap. Carter chuckled, stroking her soft fur. "Yeah, it's ambitious, but I think it could work. Let's think this through… I could use the Verdant Architect skill to shape some pipes or channels out of wood. They'd run from the stream to the house. Maybe set up a storage tank somewhere high up to create water pressure."

He took another sip of tea, his mind buzzing with possibilities. "For the shower, I'd need a way to heat the water. A fire rune? Or maybe I could use some of those Flamevine roots we found. They're supposed to generate heat. That could work."

Ivy chirped again, wagging her tail. Carter grinned. "You're into this idea too, huh? Good, because I'll need your help finding more materials. We're going to need a lot to make this work."

He leaned back, finishing his tea. "Alright, first thing tomorrow, we'll start working on the system. Step one: build the water channels. Step two: figure out the storage and heating. And step three: enjoy a nice, hot shower."

Carter looked down at Ivy, who was wagging her tail excitedly. "Thanks for being my sounding board, Ivy. We're gonna turn this place into a proper home in no time." Ivy chirped happily, and Carter couldn't help but smile as he began sketching out his plans in his mind.

The next day dawned bright and clear, the sunlight streaming through the treehouse windows. Carter stretched and yawned as he rolled out of bed, his mind already buzzing with ideas. "Alright," he muttered to himself, pulling on his clothes. "Today's the day we get this water system started."

After a quick breakfast, Carter stepped outside, his boots crunching against the soft forest floor. He walked to the base of the massive tree holding his treehouse, placing a hand on its sturdy bark. "Alright, big guy," he said, patting the trunk. "Time to put you to work."

He closed his eyes, focusing on his Verdant Architect skill. "Skill: Verdant Architect," he said aloud. The air around him shimmered faintly as the magic activated. Carter opened his eyes, staring at the tree and the ground around it.

"Okay," he said, taking a deep breath. "First, we need channels for the water. Something sturdy and natural that won't disrupt the flow. Let's see…" He imagined roots growing and twisting into hollow pathways, stretching from the stream to the treehouse. As he concentrated, the ground began to shift. Roots emerged, weaving together to form an intricate network of channels.

"Yes! That's perfect," Carter said, grinning as the channels extended toward the stream. "That should take care of the transportation."

Ivy chirped nearby, watching the process with wide eyes. Carter laughed. "What do you think, Ivy? Pretty cool, huh? But we're not done yet."

He turned his attention to the treehouse. "Next step: storage. We need a tank or reservoir to hold the water. Something up high to create pressure. Maybe on one of the higher branches?"

Closing his eyes again, Carter envisioned a large, hollowed-out section of the tree forming naturally. The magic responded, and a hollow chamber began to take shape high above, with a network of roots connecting it to the channels below.

"That should do it," Carter said, opening his eyes to inspect his work. "Now for the shower. Let's make this simple. A wooden spout, maybe with a few runes to control the flow. And for heating…" He paused, scratching his head. "Flamevine roots. They're natural heaters. I'll set them up near the base of the storage tank."

As he worked, Carter explained his process to Ivy, who chirped and hopped around him. "This system's gonna be amazing, Ivy. Once it's done, we'll have running water for the garden, a proper shower, and maybe even a sink. Can you imagine how easy life's gonna be with all that?"

Ivy let out an enthusiastic chirp, wagging her tail. Carter smiled, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Alright, just a few more tweaks, and we'll test this thing out. Let's hope it works as well as it looks."

Carter stood back, wiping his hands on his pants as he admired the finished work. The intricate network of water channels, the elevated storage tank, and the wooden spout for the shower were all in place. Ivy sat beside him, her glowing green fur shimmering as she tilted her head curiously.

"Alright, Ivy," Carter said, hands on his hips. "Moment of truth. Let's see if this actually works."

He walked over to the base of the tree, where the main water channel connected to the stream. Bending down, he inspected the root-like pipe, making sure everything was secure. "Okay, here goes nothing," he muttered, opening the small valve he had crafted to let the water flow.

The sound of rushing water filled the air as the stream began moving through the channels. Carter straightened up, watching as the water snaked its way toward the treehouse. "It's working! Look at that, Ivy!" he said, grinning.

Ivy chirped happily, bouncing in place. Carter laughed. "Alright, next step: the storage tank." He climbed the stairs to the higher branches where the reservoir was located. The water was flowing smoothly into the hollowed-out section of the tree. "Perfect," he said, leaning over to inspect it. "The pressure's building up just like I hoped. Now for the real test."

Back on the ground, Carter moved to the wooden spout he had installed for the shower. "Alright, let's see if this baby can actually deliver," he said, turning the small handle to release the water. A steady stream poured out, clear and cool.

"Yes!" Carter shouted, throwing his fists in the air. "We've got running water, Ivy! How awesome is this?"

Ivy chirped excitedly, running in circles around him. Carter crouched down to pat her head. "But wait," he said, grinning mischievously. "We're not done yet. Let's try the heated water."

He walked over to the base of the storage tank, where the Flamevine roots were set up. With a small rune inscribed on the wood, he activated the heating system. Within moments, the faint glow of the roots intensified, and the water temperature began to rise.

Back at the spout, Carter placed his hand under the flow, feeling the warmth. "It works! Hot water! Ivy, we're living in luxury now!"

Ivy jumped up onto his leg, wagging her tail. Carter laughed, scooping her up. "Okay, okay, you're excited. But there's one more thing to check: the garden irrigation."

He carried Ivy to the garden area, where smaller channels branched out to water the plants. Opening another valve, he watched as water flowed gently through the system, moistening the soil around the newly planted seeds. "Look at that," Carter said, setting Ivy down. "Even the garden's getting what it needs. This is perfect."

He sat down on a nearby log, letting out a contented sigh. "I can't believe it all came together. Running water, a hot shower, and an irrigated garden. Who would've thought I'd be able to pull this off?"

Ivy hopped onto his lap, nuzzling against him. Carter smiled, scratching behind her ears. "Thanks for helping me, Ivy. Couldn't have done it without you keeping me company."

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, Carter leaned back, feeling a deep sense of accomplishment. "This place is really starting to feel like home," he said softly. Ivy chirped in agreement, her glowing fur warm against him as they sat together, enjoying the fruits of their labor.

The next morning, Carter stood in the garden, gazing at the freshly watered soil. Ivy sat beside him, wagging her tail. "You know, Ivy," Carter began, tapping his chin, "I've been thinking. These plants are going to take a while to grow on their own. But… maybe there's something I can do to speed things up."

Ivy chirped curiously, tilting her head. Carter grinned. "What if I combined my skills? Let's try this out." He knelt down, placing both hands on the soil. "Combo Skill: Nature Touch + Soil Enrichment," he said aloud.

A soft green light began to emanate from his hands, spreading across the garden. The soil shimmered faintly, and the seeds beneath the surface seemed to respond immediately. Carter could feel the magic working, a connection between himself, the soil, and the plants.

"It's working," he whispered, his voice filled with awe. "I can feel the energy flowing. The soil's nutrients are enhancing, and the seeds are responding to the touch of nature's magic."

As the moments passed, small green shoots began to break through the surface of the soil. Carter's eyes widened, a delighted laugh escaping him. "Look at that, Ivy! They're growing already! This is amazing!"

Ivy barked happily, bouncing around the garden as more sprouts emerged, their growth accelerating under the combined magic. Carter continued channeling the energy, his voice filled with excitement. "This could change everything. With this skill, I can grow food, herbs, and flowers so much faster. We'll never have to worry about supplies again."

The green shoots quickly grew taller, leaves unfurling and flowers beginning to bloom. Carter sat back, wiping sweat from his forehead as he admired the vibrant garden. "This is incredible," he said, looking over at Ivy. "I didn't think it would work this well. We're going to have the best garden in the whole forest."

Ivy chirped in agreement, wagging her tail as she sniffed at one of the newly bloomed flowers. Carter laughed. "Alright, little buddy. Let's keep this going. The more we plant, the more we grow, and the better this place will become."
