Chapter 8: Rat King's Crown
Bob wasn't sure how effective he would be in a fight while injured, so he decided to take a break and told his group to rest for a while. As the minutes passed in the stinking tunnel, Bob felt his HP regenerate completely after about 30 minutes of sitting in silence. Not too surprised by the rapid recovery, Bob decided it was time to continue down the tunnel.
After walking for about four minutes, they came across three skeletons. Since Bob had already killed one with a single strike, he assumed this would be another easy XP gain. But Eduard spoke up:
"Hey Bob, let us kill something too. We need XP and experience in combat," Eduard said, with David nodding in agreement.
Bob, who was intent on getting stronger, felt a surge of protectiveness over his XP and coins. He instinctively gripped his sword tightly.
"This is my hunt. You've joined it. If you want to hunt, go out of the tunnel and wait for me to finish," Bob said coldly, his voice carrying a tinge of anger.
[Blood Shadow liked your rizz words]
[Blood Shadow donated 50 coins]
Eduard said nothing, clearly upset, but Bob didn't wait for his response. He quickly dispatched the three skeletons with a single strike, as they were close together.
[+75 XP]
[+300 coins]
"Fine, as you like," Eduard grumbled, pointing the other way.
"David, are you coming with me?" Eduard asked, and without a word, David followed.
"Nina, are you coming?" Eduard asked her as well.
"I don't know," Nina replied uncertainly.
"Nina, stay with me. I need you to shine the light," Bob suddenly said.
"We need to light the way too," Eduard argued angrily.
"Excuse me, but I think I'll go with Bob," Nina said, standing next to him.
"Suit yourself," Eduard grumbled, and he and David moved off.
"Come on, Nina," Bob said, and they began walking down the tunnel together.
[Mysterious Wanderer likes your charm]
After a couple of minutes, Nina lit a cigarette, adding another layer of stink to the already foul-smelling tunnel. They walked in silence for a while, until they reached a large cave-like room after about five minutes. The room was lit with a neon blue glow from mushrooms growing on the ceiling, and long roots stretched across one side. In the middle of the room was a treasure chest, guarded by four of the rabbits Bob had already fought. Near the chest was a boss-level hare, twice the size of the others.
Bob turned to Nina.
"Nina, something could happen and I may need to activate my rage mode. Go about three meters away from me, and once the fight is over, I'll come for you."
"What rage mode?" Nina asked, leaning back in confusion.
"Please, Nina, go. I've got adrenaline flowing, and I don't want to talk here anymore," Bob said impatiently.
Nina didn't respond, just quietly walked back through the tunnel.
Bob then looked back at the four rabbits, which were positioned near the entrance of the cave. He knew he could take them out quickly before the boss noticed. So, Bob crept along the wall and quietly approached the sleeping rabbits. He struck quickly, stabbing one in the head while it was still asleep.
"Rf!" one of the rabbits squeaked in surprise, but Bob didn't wait for them to react. He plunged his sword into another one's head.
The last two rabbits immediately jumped toward Bob, but he cut them in the belly and threw them to the ground. He finished them off quickly as they bled out.
[+140 XP]
[+440 coins]
The boss, awakened by the commotion, rushed at Bob. Bob easily jumped over the large rabbit and, mid-air, stabbed it in the back. But to his surprise, the sword didn't cut as deeply as he expected.
Bob quickly grabbed his sword again and slashed the boss's leg. It flew backward, and Bob laughed bloodthirstily.
"Haha! I think I found your weakness!"
He then proceeded to chop off the boss's legs, leaving it helpless. Bob didn't hesitate and began stabbing the boss repeatedly in the stomach.
[Congratulations! you killed the Boss: Big Rabbit]
[+200 XP]
[+500 coins]
Bob was exhausted by the time he finally killed the boss, stabbing it about forty times before it collapsed into red particles. A syringe of blue liquid appeared in place of the body.
Bob scanned the syringe with his Eyes of God.
[Hizceyl IT54]
[Rarity: common]
The syringe seemed like something he was supposed to inject into himself, but Bob hesitated, unsure of what it did or whether it was temporary or permanent. Deciding to save it for a dire situation, he stored it in his inventory.
But before he could, the system window appeared:
[Ruby Ruler says it's a permanent mutation and you don't need to worry. You're supposed to inject it now.]
Bob, trusting the system's guidance, injected the syringe into his bicep. Immediately, he felt a burning sensation in his eyes.
[A mutation is seeping into your body]
[Title earned: Mutant]
Bob grabbed his eyes in pain, but after about a minute, the burning stopped. He opened his status to check the changes:

Bob's mutation had given him improved eyesight. His vision was now twice as sharp, and he could see further than before. He smiled at the unexpected boost.
[Mutant]
You were the first to add something extra to your DNA that shouldn't be there. You became the first mutant. Your mutations will be 20% more effective.
Bob felt a rush of excitement. The title was powerful, and he couldn't help but imagine the strength of future mutations if they became even more effective with this title.
Feeling pleased, Bob decided to spend his XP.
[Strength increased by 1, Agility increased by 1, Vitality increased by 1]
[You have gained 1 bonus point]
With only 450 XP left and the next level requiring 500, Bob was unable to level up further but used the bonus points wisely.
[Strength increased by 3, Agility increased by 1]
Bob had focused on strength because if he hadn't found the boss's weakness, the fight could have dragged on forever.
Finally, Bob approached the treasure chest and opened it slowly, revealing an old, black crown. The crown emanated an evil, ancient aura, and Bob felt a chill as he picked it up. The six tips of the crown were adorned with red gems, but the item's rarity was unknown.
Curious, Bob scanned it.
[Rat King's Crown
Rarity: ???]
[Ruby Ruler's eyebrows are furrowed because he doesn't know this item yet]
[Mysterious Wanderer suggests you don't put it on your head, as it might be cursed]
[Blood Shadow is impatient and says to put it on your head already]
[Night Whisperer has an unreadable expression and says to put it on your head]
Bob hesitated for a moment, then decided to try it on. Slowly, he placed the crown on his head...
