Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Maple Leaf Park
Vince and Chloe slipped out of the academy's side entrance, their movements quick and deliberate, barely disturbing the quiet of the night. They kept to the shadows, avoiding the occasional flicker of lights from distant windows, the only sound the soft shuffle of their shoes against the pavement. They had to walk a little ways from the academy to get to Vince's car. He pressed a button on the key fob, and the headlights flashed briefly as the door clicked open. Chloe climbed into the passenger seat, the leather creaking under her weight. Vince started the engine with a low rumble, the sound cutting through the silence. As they pulled away far from the academy, the dark road stretched out before them, their destination a quiet, eerie park on the edge of town. The city's lights faded in the rearview mirror, leaving only the hum of the engine and the rising tension in the air.
The moon hung high in the sky, casting a faint glow over the city streets. Vince kept his hands on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the road as the car hummed through the quiet night. Chloe sat beside him, the low rumble of the engine filling the space between them. The city lights blinked past in the rearview mirror, slowly fading as they left the more populated areas behind.
"I'm not sure about this," Chloe said, glancing out the window, her voice tense. "I mean, we're really doing this, right? Going after people who've been kidnapping girls?"
Vince didn't answer immediately. His focus was on the road ahead, the dim streetlights casting brief shadows over his face. He wasn't one for reassurance, especially not when it came to things like this. His job was about results, about getting to the truth, no matter how dark or twisted it was.
"Yeah, we're doing it," Vince said, his voice calm, but heavy with conviction. "You signed up for this."
Chloe sighed, her fingers drumming lightly on the dashboard as the silence between them grew. "I know, but it feels... bigger than I thought. Maybe we're just a few steps away from pulling the string that unravels everything."
Vince gave a slight glance her way, his lips pulling into a faint, almost amused smile. "I hope it is as easy as you say"
Chloe shifted in her seat, her gaze fixed on the night passing outside. "I guess I just didn't expect this... feeling of power. Like, I'm actually doing something. Not just sitting back and watching it all fall apart."
Vince's smile faded, his expression hardening as the weight of their task settled back into the space between them. "You're not the only one. But be ready. Things don't always go the way you think they will."
Chloe nodded, her heart pounding with both excitement and uncertainty. She wasn't naive enough to think this would be easy. But for the first time in a long while, she felt like they were on the edge of something important. Something that could change her life forever.
The night air grew colder as Vince and Chloe made their way toward the park, the road stretching out before them like a dark ribbon. The streetlights cast long shadows, flickering occasionally as if struggling against the night's thickening darkness. On either side, empty buildings loomed, their windows dark and vacant, adding to the eerie silence that enveloped the car. A few late-night cars passed by, their headlights briefly illuminating the road before disappearing into the distance.
The sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the soft hum of the engine and the occasional rustling of trees lining the street. A chill swept through the air as they neared the park's entrance, its large iron gates barely visible through the mist that was starting to roll in from the trees. The fog clung to the ground like a shroud, and the park's outline seemed to fade into the night, an unsettling quiet settling over the area as if it were holding its breath.
Vince slowed the car as they approached, the headlights barely making a dent in the thickening fog. The path ahead seemed to twist and turn, with shadows cast in strange angles that made it difficult to tell where the road ended and the park began. It was as if they had left the world behind, entering a space that existed in limbo, untouched by time.
The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and fallen leaves, the kind of smell that lingered in the cool, moist night. It felt like the park itself was waiting, ready to reveal its secrets. And Vince, with Chloe beside him, was about to uncover something he wasn't sure he was ready to face.

Solara, Solstice, Bog Bay City
Maple Leaf Park
Midnight
Maple Leaf Park had the air of a place forgotten by time. The concrete pathways, cracked and uneven, were lined with faded street lamps, their weak light barely cutting through the heavy mist that had started to settle over the area. Trees with thick trunks stood like silent sentinels, their bare branches swaying gently in the wind, casting jagged shadows on the ground.
As Chloe stepped out of the car, the cold air hit her like a slap to the face. She pulled her jacket tighter around her, but the chill in the air seeped through. She shivered involuntarily, her breath coming out in visible puffs.
Vince noticed her discomfort right away. Without a word, he removed his trench coat and draped it over her shoulders. Chloe looked up at him, surprised.
"Are you sure? It's not too cold for you?" she asked, hesitating.
Vince gave her a small, almost imperceptible smile, looking down at his own attire—dark jeans, a simple shirt, and the long, weathered trench coat he had tossed to her. "I'll be fine," he said, his voice smooth but with a trace of sarcasm. "Besides, I think you need it more."
Chloe wrapped the coat around herself, feeling its warmth instantly seep through the fabric. She smiled, a bit flustered, as she glanced up at him. "Thank you, it smells good" she said quietly.
"Hm?"
"Nothing," she hurrily ran ahead of him.
Vince gave a small nod, his expression neutral but his eyes betraying a hint of something unspoken. His clothes were simple but well-fitted—nothing flashy, just functional and comfortable. There was a certain elegance to him, the way he carried himself, like he was used to being in control. It wasn't the first time Chloe had noticed how easy he made it look.
As they started walking through the fog-covered park, the silence between them grew. The eerie quiet made Chloe's mind wander, and she decided to lighten the mood with a story she'd heard about the park.
"You ever hear about Nathaniel Gray?" she asked, her voice almost conspiratorial as they moved deeper into the mist.
Vince glanced at her, half-expecting some local folklore, but he said nothing. Chloe continued anyway, her voice lowering in tone.
"He was a gardener here in the 1800s. He fell in love with a woman, but she didn't return his feelings. So, he... lost it." She paused for effect, her eyes catching Vince's, waiting to see if he was listening.
Vince didn't look at her, but his attention was piqued. "Go on," he said, clearly intrigued despite his disinterest in ghost stories.
"Legend has it," Chloe continued, her voice taking on a darker tone, "Nathaniel Gray didn't just kill her. He... took her heart. It was the only way he thought he could keep her with him, you know? He believed that by taking her heart, he could somehow make her love him forever."
Chloe paused, her eyes scanning the fog that seemed to grow thicker around them. Vince was still listening, though his expression remained unreadable.
"The really creepy part?" she continued, her voice almost a whisper now. "People say Nathaniel's spirit still roams these paths when the fog rolls in. And he doesn't just kill anyone. He takes the heart of women who remind him of her—women who look like his lost love. So, if you wander too far into the mist... you might end up as his next victim."
Chloe's eyes met Vince's, a hint of amusement flickering in them despite the sinister tale. She shrugged casually, as if the ghost story was no more unsettling than a rainy day. "But don't worry. He only goes after women who look like her. So, you're safe."
Vince let out a low chuckle, his voice laced with sarcasm. "Yeah, sure. I'm the last person he'd want. But maybe you should keep an eye out, just in case. Can't be too careful with legends like that."
Chloe grinned, brushing off the tension in the air. "No need to worry about me. I'm much prettier than that poor woman, so I'm probably safe... i think?"
Vince chuckled lightly, shaking his head. "I don't know if 'pretty' will stop him," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "But if you think it will, be my guest."
Chloe laughed, shaking her head in amusement. "Don't worry. I'll be fine. I'm much more charming than a ghost."
They continued walking, the conversation flowing more easily now, the ghost story lingering in the air but no longer taking the lead. Vince kept his eyes ahead, the unease from earlier slipping away as he concentrated on their surroundings. But as the fog thickened, something in the park still felt... off.
