Chapter 18: Chapter 18; Mistaken for a slave.
The man's grip on Ava's arm tightened as he pulled her closer. "Well, well, well," he repeated, his voice dripping with malice. "What do we have here? A runaway slave, perhaps?"
Ava struggled to free herself, but the man's grip was too strong. "No, I'm not a slave," she protested, trying to sound calm.
But the man just laughed. "Oh, really? Then what are you doing here, dressed in rags and covered in dirt? You look like you just escaped from a plantation."
Ava's eyes scanned the crowd, searching for someone to help her. But everyone seemed to be staring at her with suspicion and hostility.
The man pulled Ava through the crowded streets, his grip never faltering. Ava stumbled and tripped, but the man just dragged her along, ignoring her protests.
As they walked, Ava noticed that they were heading towards the outskirts of the city. The buildings grew shabbier and the streets grew narrower, until they finally reached a large, ominous-looking building.
The man pushed Ava through the doorway, and she found herself in a crowded, dimly-lit room. The air was thick with the smell of sweat and fear.
Ava's eyes adjusted slowly to the light, and she saw that the room was filled with people, all of whom seemed to be staring at her. There were men and women, all ages and colors, but they all shared a look of desperation and hopelessness.
The man who had brought Ava here pushed her forward, and she stumbled into the center of the room.
"New merchandise," the man announced, his voice loud and clear. "Fresh from the countryside. Never been trained, but she looks like she's got spirit."
Ava's eyes adjusted slowly to the dim light of the room. She saw that she was surrounded by other people, all of whom looked like they had been through a lot. They were dressed in tattered clothes, and their eyes had a haunted look.
As Ava looked around, she realized that she was in some kind of slave market. The people around her were all slaves, and they were being sold to the highest bidder.
Ava's heart sank as she realized that she was in grave danger. She had to find a way to escape, but for now, she was trapped.
The day wore on, with buyer after buyer coming to inspect the slaves. Ava watched in horror as people were bought and sold like animals.
Finally, it was Ava's turn. She stood up, trying to look confident and strong. But as she looked around the room, she saw a woman who made her blood run cold.
The woman was tall and imposing, with a face that seemed carved from stone. She was dressed in fine clothes, and she carried herself with an air of confidence and authority.
The woman's eyes locked onto Ava, and Ava felt a shiver run down her spine. She knew, in that moment, that her life was about to change forever.
The woman walked over to Ava, her eyes never leaving hers. "So, you're the new one," she said, her voice cold and detached. "I must say, you're quite beautiful."
Ava felt a surge of fear as the woman reached out and touched her face. She knew that she was in grave danger, and she had to find a way to escape.
But for now, she was trapped. The woman bought her, and Ava was thrown into a truck that moved her to a place she didn't know.
As the truck drove through the night, Ava couldn't shake the feeling that she was being taken to a place from which she would never escape.
Finally, the truck stopped, and Ava was pulled out. She found herself in front of a large, ominous-looking house.
The woman who had bought her led her to a room deep in the basement. The room was dark and damp, with stone walls and a cold, hard floor.
Ava was thrown into the room, and the door was locked behind her. She was plunged into darkness, with no way out.
As she lay on the cold floor, Ava couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. Would she ever escape from this place? Or would she be trapped forever, a slave to the woman who had bought her?
