Chapter 2: Suze Miles
"Are you alright?"
Veronica scrambled for something to say. This was a different world than the one she grew up in, she had to be really careful with how she spoke.
'What to say? I need to find out more! How do I do that?'
Then the idea hit her and it became clear what she needed to do.
"Uhm... I... I don't know? Do you know who am I?"
The woman looked surprised, then confused. The facial expressions changed a couple of times, it was kind of hilarious to watch, eventually it settled on blank, like she didn't want to show what she was thinking. Her eyes looked Veronica up and down, then settled on her face and she said, "Should I know you?"
"No, I don't think so... Actually I don't know. I can't seem to recall, anything other than my name... My name is Veronica Navarro, by the way."
'I hope she takes pity on me, if not... That will make things a lot harder. Especially if I have to walk out on the street in bloody and dirty clothes.'
The woman's eyes constricted, like she wanted to see her exact thoughts. Veronica just smiled wryly and pretended to be embarrassed. She only had this one chance, if the woman doesn't believe her and sends her away... That would be quite bad. Luckily this particular woman seemed to be either very kind or very dumb.
"My name is Suze Miles, if you want you can come with me and clean yourself off. Maybe your memory will return shortly."
With that Suze turned around and went through the back door. Veronica didn't waste time either, she went after her. Inside she arrived into a kitchen, it was full of food, equipment for cooking and an old dinning table at the center. Before Suze could speak she asked her, "Where are we exactly?"
'It would be a good start to at least know where am I.'
She still didn't fully believe her act, but answered her question non the less. "We are in Hammon, the Harbor District, in my and my husband's inn called Miles Inn. Now before you ask more questions or anything, you should clean off the blood and dirt. There is a restroom that way, you can use that."
'Hammon, Harbor District? Yep, definitely not Earth!'
The woman pointed towards a corridor. Veronica nodded and turned to go, the corridor was lit by gas powered lamps. The building was made of stone, she saw that from the outside, but the inside was covered in elegant wood paneling, not too expensive but still a luxury.
'So they aren't really rich, but also doing pretty well compared to most people. At least I highly doubt that this is what poverty looks like in this world. My dorm room at the university was way worse than any of this. Not even mentioning the amount of food they have.'
She was busy with her own thoughts as she arrived at the restroom door. It had a couple of elegant carvings on it, it gave the door a hint of luxury. She studied it for a while, then stepped into the restroom. It was dark, but she quickly found a gas lamp and opened the valve on it, the room became alight. It wasn't really anything special, there was a sink with running water, a towel next to it, there was also a weird looking toilet, with a pedal at the bottom.
'Oh... I seen the likes of these in a museum.'
The rest was pretty much the same as the corridor, same wood paneling. What was a bit surprising is that everything was spotless. 'Who ever cleans this inn needs a raise!'
After observing everything Veronica approached the most important part of the room... The mirror. There was two of them actually, a small right above the sink and a larger human sized next to it. She went to the larger one and slowly raised her eyes, until it stopped, so her face wasn't in the periphery of her vision.
'Lets see if I turned ugly or not...'
'Well I can't say I expected this...'
In the mirror there was a young woman around 21 years of age, her hair was bright brown, like a tree's bark, it reached just a little below the top her shoulder.
Her face was above average, not ugly but also not truly perfect, there were a couple of birthmarks on her as well, also her nose was a bit too thin and her eyes looked to be a bit different in size. Of course, most of that was only imagined by her, in fact she was beautiful in her own right.
"Huh... I thought I would wake up in a different body, but this is just me only with more blood. I actually don't know how to feel about it, I could've woken up in a better looking body."
She looked down at her chest, then turned to look at her back and silently thought. 'Maybe one with bigger assets.' Her eyes then returned to her face and she finally noticed something different. Her eye color changed.
"How did I not notice that before. Maybe it only changed now. And why is it so strangely colored."
In her previous world called Earth people had eye colors like blue, green and brown.
These three were the main with some shade differences, and also some special cases or diseases when the eye color deviated from the normal three. But after seeing Suze Miles and her dark grey eyes, she figured people have different colored eyes in this world, but hers was just too bizarre.
The main color dominating the iris was pink out of everything, but there were some orange and even rainbow undertones.
"Why did it change? Why does it look like that? Why is it pink?... Just why?"
She began to panic a little, this very weird phenomena brought back those previous emotions she managed to wrestle down.
'Okay, deep breaths Veronica! Deep breaths! Losing control of oneself never helped a single soul!'
While calming down she turned to the sink and opened the faucet. Cool water began to run from it, she instantly pooled a handful and washed her face. This calmed her mind further and soon she was cleaning herself from blood and dirt. There was only one problem... Well, two actually.
'My clothes are all wet now, and I don't know where am I, but this place is definitely could use some heating. Then there is this other problem.'
Looking down at her chest there was a large hole in her dress, about the size of a large dagger's blade. The hole couldn't be hidden, it was at a very awkward place right next to her breast.
'Wait! It even stabbed through my corset, if I move wrong my boob is showing. I should ask that Suze Miles for some clothing, maybe she has a dress that she doesn't need.'
There was something else about the dress that she only just now noticed. It didn't fit her well, at most places it was a bit too big. The corset was a little loose on her too.
'Like the person who wore it, wasn't my size... Interesting. Did I transmigrate into a person, then changed her appearance. But I thought that when you transmigrate you shouldn't change how the previous owner of your body looks... Weird.'
There was also another problem, who killed the woman in the alley and why.
'AHH... So many questions!'
Veronica took a couple of deep breaths, then slowly looked up into the mirror. The woman there stared back with those bewitching eyes. Then she slowly straightened her body and moved towards the door, on her way she muttered to herself. "It is time to get some answers."
She left the restroom and slowly approached the kitchen where she came from. Now that she had a bit more time to observe herself, she realized that the shoes on her feet were of different size as well. It was a bit awkward to move in them, but not all too bad.
Veronica approached the kitchen and heard a conversation between a woman and a man. She quickly realized who they were... Suze Miles and her husband.
"...You are telling me she doesn't know anything?" Asked the man, his voice was deep but not too much.
"Yes, at least that is what she said, I'm not sure I believe her though." Answered Suze Miles, the man chuckled a bit then said in a louder voice.
"Why don't we ask her? Miss Navarro, why won't you join the conversation?"
Veronica already had a lie ready. She shoved her head in the open door, not showing her body and said, "I would love to join, but it seemed my dress and corset got ripped, from whatever happened to me... Uh... Mrs. Miles, if it isn't too much to ask... Do you perhaps have a spare dress I could borrow?
Their expressions were quite funny, but she held a very awkward blushing face, like she was feeling very ashamed asking for an item such as a dress, from basically a stranger. While both of them were stunned by her request, she observed the man.
He was tall and muscular. He was also past his prime and probably a couple years older than Mrs. Miles.
He had a thinning, black hairline and a well maintained beard with a bit of gray here and there. His eyes were a magnificent blue color. His face was on the handsome side, but even a blind person could see who got the better deal in their marriage.
Mrs. Miles finally regained control of her body and went away muttering under her breath, "I will be right back." From that the man regained some control as well and introduced himself.
"Hello, my name is James Miles, you have already met with my wife Suze. This is my establishment, well more like my families. The Miles Inn."
'So I was correct about him, not like it was really hard to guess', Veronica smiled at the man, it wasn't a genuine smile, but it was enough to fool the innkeeper or at least he pretended to be fooled by her.
"Nice to meet you Mr. Miles. My name is Veronica Navarro as you are probably already aware."
With the introductions complete, both stayed in awkward silence until an angel in the form of Mrs. Miles saved them from their seemingly eternal suffering. In her hand was an elegant dress, it was brownish in color with a bit of orange at a couple of places.
Suze approached Veronica and was about to give it to her, when she surprised her again. Veronica turned away, this time she was actually ashamed, but what can be done.
'I am not from this time period, how would I know how to put on a dress like that!'
"This... This will sound weird... But I don't know how to put it on... If it isn't too much to ask... After all your kindness... Could you help me?"
Mrs. Miles looked at her, those dark grey eyes judging her whole being. Then she must have seen something in her, because a small smile crept onto that stone cold face.
"Sure, I will show it to you. It is actually quite simple."
