Chapter 8: Happy people
Alexandria Pov.
My night was cold and lonely. I couldn't bring myself to sleep again. Whenever I close my eyes, I am drawn back deep into the depth of hell which has haunted me for months. The very proof of her scars and the reason for her comeback. Standing outside her door I hesitate to knock. It was past midnight and she must be deep in sleep. I push open the door watching her pale white skin come into view. She wasn't only beautiful from the outside but inside too.
Her smile has never ceased to capture any heart, including that of babies, but these days she rarely smiles. Her eyes no longer carry the glint of light they used to. Rather it now carried pain and hate. The hatred within them was not only for the Camfrey's and her parents but for me. Given the chance, she will leave and she will choose to stay away but why should she be the one to go?
The moonlight cast a fragment of its light on her beautiful face. I felt myself drawn to her, I couldn't resist the urge to touch those soft lips, her pink pale cheeks. Sitting by her side I couldn't resist, I let my thoughts wander. Taking her warm hands into mine, memories came flooding.
"You used to be so cheerful so full of life and now you look more like you're living by the day. I had watched you go to school every morning and hurry home on time just to see you walk back home with your books in hand with total disregard for the wealth your family and younger sister flaunted which wasn't theirs to begin with. Those days were calm and I wish you hadn't met him. I wish you had continuously stayed with your grandparents and not returned home where you had seen him in the arms of Samantha. I can only wish you had chosen another over him" It was hard to get sleep after the torment that woke me up.
I walk to the balcony watching the stars dance in the light of the shimmering moon. If only we could be like the stars and moon. So carefree with no enemies, so free to make our choices and love freely, but life couldn't be compared in that way. Taking her to the ball hosted by the Camfreys was the worst idea ever. I did not like one bit of Edwards's hands around her, nor the screams of Samantha directed at her but as Ian said, it is the best possible outcome.
I can't hide her forever, which is something I would gladly do, but not her. She is a bird with bright-colored feathers and deserves to fluent her beauty, but now she feels caged—caged by me.
I sat in the dark longer than I had anticipated. The light was beginning to come out when I stepped out of her room and headed to the garden. Ian was seated with a cup of coffee in hand and reading the daily newspaper.
"What did Tribune write this time around?" I pull out a seat for myself. Ian sighs, tossing the papers over to me. It was clear from his gestures it was nothing nice.
"Is the mummy back to life or something more sinister is hiding behind closed doors?" I read out loud. Everyone knew best not to directly target the Hale Family. "I wish they had written more, I want Samantha out in the open" Ian Chuckles gave me a smooth nod. He too wanted the same. The little brat had offended more people than her head could carry on her way to fame. It was about time karma caught up with her.
"What are your plans for today?" Ian asked. I stare into the distance watching the light brighten over the roses as they sway in the direction of the morning breeze. Usually, I would attend to matters from home, I wouldn't dare go out or let my person be seen outside my comfort zone but with her by my side, I suddenly had the urge to flaunt her about. If she should establish an identity as Mrs Hale, she had to be seen and praised by the people. I turn to Ian
"How about visiting Mary's motherless baby home? It's been a while since I last saw those miserable kids" Ian chuckles, walking away. From behind I could feel her piercing gaze staring down at me from the back of my head. The amount of hate those pearl-like eyes of hers carried for me couldn't be denied or mistaken. She has always been a free bird who loves but that sky can only be by my side. There is no way in the world I will allow her alone less I find her death this time around.
I turned and she hastily slammed the window without hesitation. The slight flush from her face from the morning cold did not go unnoticed. I wish she could wake up with her usual glow which used to be filled with life and dreams, not that she was nothing but a walking death.
I walked back to my room and prepared myself for our outing. Stepping out she stood by her door all beautiful as always. The yellow dress fitted her perfectly. All she had to do was stand by my side but I couldn't help but notice she would rather walk in my shadows. I took the lead and we headed for the front where Ian was already waiting with the cars. I opened the door for her and she stepped in without a word. The ride was calm and I could feel the tension from her side. "Have you been there before?" I asked and she just nodded.
"Two years ago… right before I got married" the pain in her voice couldn't be masked. It was just as I had thought. She did visit Mary's motherless baby home, and her last visit was our last meeting. The car soon pulled up in the familiar yard. I watched the children run towards the car with smiles and laughter. Their joy could be seen and I turned to my stone-cold wife, "You should smile more often, the children love happy people"
