Chapter 4: System functions
"Alright, Sys," I said, addressing the system by the name I had given it. "Let's check out your other functions. Hmm, the next one is... quests."
I hesitated for a moment, my curiosity piqued. But before opening the quest tab, a thought struck me. "Sys," I began cautiously, "is there any penalty if I fail to complete a quest?"
The system's voice chimed in, calm and reassuring. [No, host. There will be no penalties for incomplete quests. If a quest is not completed within the time frame, it will simply be cancelled.]
I let out a relieved sigh. "Good," I muttered. The idea of penalties looming over my head was not something I wanted to deal with right now. "Alright then, open the quest tab."
The translucent interface flickered for a moment before the Quests panel appeared before me. I scanned the screen, half-expecting some overwhelming mission right off the bat. Instead, I was greeted with a blank slate—no quests, no objectives, nothing.
"Hah, figures," I remarked with a small smirk. It wasn't surprising. After all, I had only just gained access to Sys. Perhaps quests would come later, triggered by events or something.
Shrugging, I waved a hand and closed the tab. "Guess I'll check back later," I murmured, turning my attention back to the other unexplored functions of the system.
After checking the quest tab my gaze falls on the Gacha tab.
"Now Sys," I said, a hint of curiosity creeping into my voice. "Open the Gacha tab."
As soon as the command left my lips, the interface shimmered before me, and a new panel materialized. Vibrant colors swirled across the screen, accompanied by an almost playful chime. The word 'Gacha' stood boldly at the top, its design enticing and mysterious.
I studied the panel for a moment before speaking again. "Sys, explain how this works."
The system's voice responded promptly, as calm and steady as always. [The Gacha system allows the host to obtain a variety of rewards, including items, skills, techniques, and even summons. Rewards are drawn randomly, and their rarity varies.]
I raised an eyebrow. "Summons, huh?" I muttered to myself. The thought of potentially gaining allies—or powerful abilities—was intriguing.
Astr continued. [The host is entitled to one free Gacha spin per week. Additional spins can be performed using Gacha Tickets, which may be earned as rewards from quests or special events.]
I nodded slowly, piecing it all together. "So, I'll get one free spin a week, and anything else depends on those tickets," I said aloud, mulling over the implications. It was a system straight out of a game—simple enough in concept, but full of potential rewards that could make or break someone's progress.
Leaning back slightly, I studied the panel again, my thoughts racing. "Alright, Sys," I said with a small smirk. "I guess we'll save this for when I really need it. No point wasting my free spin just yet."
After closing the Gacha tab, my gaze naturally drifted to the final function: Inventory. It was the last unexplored part of Sys, and my curiosity was piqued.
"Alright, Sys," I said, straightening up. "Open the Inventory tab."
With a soft chime, the interface shifted. A grid of neatly arranged boxes appeared before me, stretching endlessly in every direction. Each box was empty, save for a faint glow that hinted at its capacity.
[The Inventory is a spatial storage system, capable of holding thousands of items. Each box can store one item, regardless of size or weight. As the system is upgraded, the inventory's capacity will expand.]
I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer number of boxes. Thousands of slots, and I could potentially store anything in them. My mind reeled at the possibilities.
But my focus quickly snapped back as my gaze settled on the very first box in the upper left corner. The Beginner's Package.
I had saved the Inventory for last specifically to find this. Without wasting time, I pointed at the box. "Sys, open beginner's package," I ordered.
[Affirmative host]
[Opening the beginner's package]
The box shimmered, and the lid dissolved, revealing two items inside. For a moment, I stared at the meager contents, a flicker of disappointment bubbling up. "That's it?" I muttered, my tone betraying my frustration.
Ignoring my irritation, I leaned in to examine the items more closely. The first was a stack of 10 Gacha Tickets, their golden edges shimmering faintly. Not bad—I'd already seen how valuable they could be.
The second item was a small vial containing a swirling, iridescent liquid. Its glow was soft yet captivating. I tapped on the item, and Sys's voice immediately provided an explanation.
[Potion of Activator: This potion allows the host to awaken dormant powers in a single part of the body. The chosen part will gain enhanced abilities based on the host's potential.]
My frustration began to ebb as I considered the possibilities. Awakening a part of my body? That could be a game-changer. Strengthening my hands for better combat, enhancing my eyes for sharper vision, or maybe even unlocking something entirely unexpected.
I let out a slow breath, the initial disappointment replaced by a growing sense of anticipation. "Alright," I said to myself, closing the inventory. "This might be more useful than I thought."
The Beginner's Package may have seemed underwhelming at first glance, but I knew its contents held the potential to tip the scales in my favor. I just needed to decide how—and when—to use them.
After a few moments of deep contemplation, I made my decision. The Potion of Activator was in my hand, and I was about to awaken one of my body's dormant powers. I paused briefly, glancing at the ten Gacha tickets I'd placed back into the inventory. There was no immediate rush to use them, but the potion… that could make a difference right now.
Without hesitation, I uncorked the potion and held it up to my lips. But just as I was about to drink it, a translucent screen materialized in front of me, blocking my view. Three options appeared before me, glowing faintly.
[Legs: Increased agility by several magnitudes and the ability to unlock a skill called Phantom Step, enabling lightning-fast movements and evasion.
Hands: Immense strength enhancement and the acquisition of Titan's Grasp, a skill that could crush defenses and wield weapons with unmatched power.
Eyes: ???? ???? ????]
I frowned, pointing at the last option. "Sys, why are there question marks for the eyes? Why isn't it showing any details?"
[The system is currently unable to determine the exact effect of awakening the eyes at its current level, host. The potential is beyond the system's capability to analyze.]
I mulled over the options carefully. Awakening my legs or hands would undoubtedly grant me a significant advantage in both speed and strength. However, such dramatic improvements would surely draw suspicion from the Everblade family. They were no fools; they would notice the sudden leap in power and investigate, no matter how well I tried to hide it.
In the end, I chose the eyes—a risky but safer option for now. "Eyes it is," I said firmly.
As soon as I made my decision, another prompt appeared.
[Would the host like to mute themselves during the process of awakening? Yes/No]
The question caught me off guard, and I hesitated. Muting myself? Why would that be necessary? But trusting Sys's judgment, I selected Yes and before I could second-guess myself, I drank the potion.
At first, the liquid felt warm, almost comforting as it slid down my throat. It was as if a calming wave passed through me. But then, without warning, a sharp pain erupted in my right eye. It felt like thousands of needles were stabbing into my eye, each jab sending waves of intense, searing pain through my skull. It was as though insects were devouring the very essence of my vision, gnawing at my eye from the inside.
I screamed, the sound muffled by the silence of the mute process. My body thrashed, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, almost to the point of breaking. I understood now why the system had warned me to mute myself—the pain was unbearable, and without that safeguard, I might have cried out loud, drawing attention.
Time lost all meaning. What felt like hours passed in what was only 30 minutes. Finally, the agony began to subside in my right blue eye, leaving a dull throb in its place. I thought it was over, but as soon as I relaxed, a new wave of pain surged through my left eye—this time, the red one.
The pain was even more intense, as if my entire eye were being set on fire. The sensation was unimaginable, and I thought I might lose consciousness, but Sys kept me anchored to reality, preventing me from slipping away. I could feel my body teetering on the edge of unconsciousness again and again, but each time, Sys's presence forced me to stay awake.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the pain stopped. My entire body felt drained, as though I had fought through an exhausting battle. I remained still, lying on the bed, not daring to move.
It wasn't until around 25 minutes later that I finally spoke, my voice hoarse and weak. "Sys, what changes have occurred in my eyes?"
[Host it's found that your both eyes had dormant powers so it awakened one after another and because of that it was so painful]
[After awakening your eyes transformed into
Eyes of omniscient: This mystical eye is an unparalleled organ of perception, directly tethered to the brain, forming a seamless bridge between sight and cognition. It allows the wielder to instantly grasp complex concepts, absorb vast amounts of information, and decode even the most enigmatic of puzzles. Its primary function transcends mere vision, acting as a gateway to universal knowledge.]
A mix of awe and unease settled over me. The pain had been unbearable, but the transformation was undeniable. These eyes were a gift—and a burden.
Before I could even fully collect my thoughts, there came a soft knock at the door.
