DC: My Name Is Not Billy Batson

Chapter 14: Chapter 14: new member

"Where has Jason been, why haven't you seen him lately?" Clark wondered.

"Where has Jason been? Why haven't we seen him lately?" Clark wondered aloud.

Dane responded, "He mentioned some time ago that he was going to search for a place called the 'League of Assassins.' It's said to be somewhere in the Arabian Peninsula, so he might be gone for quite a while."

Clark frowned. "How did he even think of going there? And what exactly is this 'League of Assassins'?"

"The 'League of Assassins' is the organization that trained Batman," Dane explained. "Jason probably wants to go there in pursuit of power."

Clark didn't press further, but he could sense there was more to Jason's motivation than Dane was willing to share.

Over the past year, Pioneer Technology had faced intense business competition, and the threats weren't limited to corporate rivals. Professional assassins had made attempts on Dane's life, and Jason had been the one to handle them.

After recovering from his injuries, Jason had chosen not to leave. He stayed under the pretense of repaying Dane for his help. However, Dane knew the truth—Jason, having spent years with Bruce, had developed a cautious nature.

He stayed not just out of gratitude, but to observe Dane and Clark. Jason wanted to determine what kind of people they truly were and whether they posed a danger to the world.

This cautiousness was something Dane admired. Jason must have realized that even if Dane and Clark turned out to be villains, he wouldn't be able to stop them alone. Yet he stayed, driven by his principles.

What Jason hadn't anticipated, however, was how much his time with the two would influence him.

In the end, Jason was deeply impressed by the character and ideals of Dane and Clark. Naturally, he chose to join the Justice League.

Given that Dane found it inconvenient to handle some business matters, Jason eventually became his personal bodyguard. He took on the responsibility of protecting Dane from mercenaries and assassins who sought to harm him through malicious means.

Initially, this wasn't a problem for Jason. As the second-generation Robin and Batman's carefully trained protégé, ordinary killers and mercenaries posed no challenge to him.

However, as Jason dealt with these minor threats, more formidable opponents began to appear.

The first was Deadshot, the legendary sharpshooter who had topped the assassin rankings for years. Deadshot didn't confront Jason directly; instead, he sniped from a staggering distance of two kilometers. A bullet passed through the glass window of a building and headed straight for Dane's temple.

At the time, Dane was in the middle of a business negotiation when he felt a strange sensation on his head—like a mosquito bite. Curious, he reached up and was shocked to find a flattened bullet lodged in his hair.

Jason, standing nearby, immediately deduced the sniper's location. However, by the time he reached the building, it was already abandoned.

The second threat was Deathstroke, a mercenary and assassin with combat skills that rivaled, if not surpassed, Batman's. This time, the danger came directly to their doorstep.

Jason faced Deathstroke in a brutal fight but was quickly outmatched. Deathstroke's expertise in hand-to-hand combat, combined with his ruthlessness, gave him a significant advantage.

Unlike Batman, who held a strict moral code, Deathstroke had no qualms about killing, which often tipped the scales in his favor during battles.

Jason struggled to hold his ground. Despite his resolve, he couldn't last long against Deathstroke's relentless onslaught. Ultimately, Dane intervened, managing to save Jason's life.

Dane responded casually, effortlessly flinging Deathstroke into the distance, his fate left unknown

It was at that moment Jason realized Clark hadn't been exaggerating when he claimed Dane was a god.

Jason's own efforts had failed to leave even a scratch on Deathstroke. Yet Dane, with a mere gesture, had rendered the deadly mercenary powerless.

This encounter solidified Jason's understanding: the Justice League Dane intended to establish was far beyond the capabilities of ordinary individuals.

It was also then that Jason began to long for greater power. Unlike Clark and Dane, who possessed otherworldly abilities, Jason was just a mortal man. He couldn't rely on divine strength or superhuman capabilities.

Instead, he resolved to push his limits in every way possible. Like Batman, Jason sought to reach the pinnacle of human potential—not only in physical fitness but also in tactical mastery and strategic thinking.

To surpass even Batman, however, he knew he would need more. That's when the idea struck him: he would go to the place where Batman himself had trained—the legendary League of Assassins.

When Dane offered him a place in the Justice League, Jason declined. He saw this journey as not just a challenge but a necessary step in his own growth. Determined, he set out to find the League, hoping it would unlock the strength he needed to stand on equal ground with the extraordinary individuals he called allies.

"You see, he pretends not to care much about Batman," Dane said to Clark with a knowing smile. "But deep down, he respects him so much that he unconsciously chooses the same path."

Clark nodded in agreement. They had discussed Batman's history before, and Clark now knew Bruce Wayne's secret identity as the Dark Knight.

Curious about the man behind the mask, Clark had once visited Gotham secretly. If he hadn't seen it with his own eyes, he wouldn't have believed that Gotham's infamous playboy billionaire was the same vigilante patrolling the city's streets each night.

The revelation had been jarring, akin to discovering that a fictional superhero existed in real life. But once the truth was laid bare, it felt oddly mundane—like peeling layers off an onion to find something simple at its core.

Clark turned to Dane. "Do you think we're ready now?"

"The preliminary preparations are almost complete," Dane replied confidently.

"I remember you mentioning that you designed a meeting place for the Justice League?"

"Yes," Dane said with a nod. "It's a building on the outskirts of the West Coast, near the ocean. The view is fantastic."

Clark raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Really? Built so quickly? It's only been a few months, hasn't it?"

Dane sighed, shaking his head as he patted Clark on the shoulder. "Clark, when will you learn? Technology is the ultimate productive force. With the knowledge from the Kryptonian archives, this kind of construction speed is nothing. If anything, I've been holding back to avoid drawing too much attention."

The new headquarters, constructed by Dane's company Umbrella, was built with cutting-edge technology. Intelligent robots, managed by Cortana, handled most of the heavy lifting.

To give Cortana a more suitable operating environment on Earth, Dane even designed a custom "brain" for her—a massive pillar of light housed within the building.

This headquarters also served as a secure storage site for important artifacts, including Clark's Kryptonian spaceship and the survival pod from his childhood. To protect the facility, Dane had installed a series of magical wards:

A repelling spell to deter unauthorized intruders. A protection spell to shield the building from physical and magical attacks. An alarm spell to notify them immediately of any breaches.

Over the past year, Dane had also delved deep into practical magic, drawing heavily on the "Wisdom of Solomon" granted by his Shazam powers. He found this ability to be an incredible asset—practically a cheat code for learning.

Reflecting on this, Dane began to understand why the wizard who granted him his powers had disappeared with such confidence. The wisdom of Solomon, he realized, wasn't just a gift; it was a manual for navigating the complexities of power.

"So, can we finally start inviting new members now?" Clark asked eagerly. "I'll be honest, I've been feeling lost lately."

Over the past year, Clark's life had been relatively quiet. Aside from helping Martha around the house, he spent much of his time observing the potential recruits Dane had mentioned. For the most part, it had been an idle year for him.

Having become a multimillionaire, Clark no longer needed to work, and tending to Jonathan's farm had become his biggest hobby. It gave him a sense of connection, as if Jonathan were still with him.

But he heeded Dane's advice, and from time to time he would go to space to bask in the sun, and his abilities were steadily improving.

"Don't rush," Dane replied with a smile. "This time, we're inviting someone who truly understands the bigger picture."

"Who?"

"Wonder Woman."

Clark's eyes widened. "Didn't you say she was in Themyscira?"

"Your information is outdated," Dane replied, a hint of amusement in his tone. "I just received news—she's back due to some changes in her work."

"Where is she now?"

"She's working at a museum in Washington, D.C."

"Should we go see her now?" Clark asked eagerly.

"Hold on," Dane said, shaking his head. "We need to send her a formal letter first. Showing up unannounced would be rude."

"What letter?"

With a wave of his hand, Dane conjured a screen in the air. He tapped it, and a black-and-white photograph appeared.

The photo depicted a group of soldiers, with a woman in the center—dressed in battle armor, standing confidently amidst them.

Clark frowned. "This is…"

"A photograph from World War I," Dane explained.

Even Lex Luthor had managed to get his hands on this image once, so acquiring it was no challenge for Dane.

"This must be an original photograph," Clark said.

"Not quite," Dane clarified. "Diana likely had the original, but given its age, it would've been difficult to preserve perfectly. She must've scanned it as an electronic file to protect it before it was completely damaged."

"And how did you get this file?" Clark asked, narrowing his eyes.

"When her computer was connected to the internet, Cortana picked it up," Dane admitted nonchalantly.

"Dane, that's a violation of her privacy…"

Ignoring Clark's reproach, Dane quickly edited a message and attached the photograph before sending it.
