Chapter 67: Chapter 68: Xiao Bai’s Transformation
On the side, Nanako was still arguing with Xiao Hei, but Feng Yu's thoughts had already drifted to the cabin nestled on the mountainside.
Though more than a month had passed, it felt to Feng Yu as though an eternity had gone by.
Inside the Cabin in the Woods
The white fox with three tails suddenly opened its eyes.
"Master!"
Xiao Bai crazily ran outside, shouting to the distant sky, "Master!"
Xiao Bai sat down, its three white tails wagging eagerly as it gazed expectantly in the direction of Feng Yu.
"Xiao... Bai..."
Inside the cabin, Nezuko saw Xiao Bai running out, confusion written on her face.
She was worried that something might have happened to Xiao Bai, but the scorching sun kept her from daring to step outside.
Nezuko could only hide in a shaded spot, watching Xiao Bai with concern.
Beside her, Sakonji Urokodaki also noticed Xiao Bai's strange behavior.
He stood up and walked out of the cabin, following Xiao Bai's gaze until he saw Feng Yu and the others approaching.
"It's good that you've returned... good that you've returned..." Sakonji's voice was choked with emotion, but after a deep sigh, he quickly regained his composure.
The red tengu mask on his face appeared ominous, but it couldn't conceal the complexity of his feelings at that moment.
In the Sky
As they neared Mount Sagiri, Feng Yu finally saw the familiar cabin and, not far from it, Xiao Bai waiting eagerly, along with Sakonji wearing the red tengu mask.
Xiao Hei landed slowly, flapping its wings to create a gust of wind that stirred the dust on the ground.
"It's been a while, Master Urokodaki..." Feng Yu said quietly, gazing at Sakonji.
"Good that you're back," Sakonji replied, but he noticed that Feng Yu seemed different now.
There was no longer the carefree energy that had once defined him. He was more reserved now, quieter, with a calm demeanor.
Sakonji wasn't sure whether this change was for better or worse, but he could only say, "Good that you're back."
After all, in this world, the best response to family was simply surviving.
"Ah, right. This is Nanako, my new disciple," Feng Yu said, pulling the shy Nanako forward.
"Master Urokodaki... Hello..." Nanako stammered, clearly startled by the tengu mask on Sakonji's face.
"You should call him Master Urokodaki, he's your grandmaster—your master's master," Feng Yu corrected her.
"Master Urokodaki..." Nanako said with some embarrassment.
"Greenish-blue eyes... you're a fine child," Sakonji Urokodaki praised as he looked at Nanako's eyes.
Beside them, Xiao Bai watched Feng Yu, feeling neglected, and immediately spoke up, "Master, Master, you're not paying attention to me!"
Xiao Bai whined.
Feng Yu looked down at Xiao Bai's wagging tails, momentarily stunned, then smiled.
"It's been a while, Xiao Bai. Looks like you've mastered that power now," Feng Yu said, opening his arms.
Xiao Bai immediately jumped into Feng Yu's embrace, happily rubbing its head against him.
Feng Yu could feel the surge of energy from Xiao Bai, much stronger than before.
"Sorry for taking so long to come back and see you," Feng Yu said, affectionately stroking Xiao Bai's head.
"It's okay, Master. As long as you remember Xiao Bai and still want me, I'll wait for you no matter how long it takes!" Xiao Bai said joyfully.
Perhaps in Xiao Bai's eyes, Feng Yu was its entire world.
"What a cute white fox! I want to pet it... hold it..." Nanako couldn't help but comment, gazing at Xiao Bai's soft fur.
Feng Yu just smiled.
"This is Nanako, Xiao Bai. From now on, we're all family," Feng Yu said. "You two should get to know each other."
Xiao Bai leaned forward and looked at Nanako. Its white tail suddenly grew longer, wrapping around Nanako's hand.
"Hello, I'm Xiao Bai, Master's favorite Xiao Bai!" it said cheerfully.
Hearing this, Nanako seemed to recall something, and glanced at Xiao Hei.
Xiao Hei noticed her gaze and quickly turned its head away, pretending to know nothing.
Nanako seemed to sense something amusing and smiled faintly.
"Hello, Xiao Bai, I'm Feng Yu's disciple. You can call me Nanako," she said, smiling as she felt the softness of Xiao Bai's tail.
And so, the group was reunited after a long separation.
They all entered the cabin.
The bonfire inside was still burning, as if it had never gone out, no matter the season.
Seeing them return, Nezuko peeked out from the shadows.
After scanning the room, her gaze landed on Nanako, who carried a strange scent.
Nezuko walked over, her eyes fixed on Nanako's, then pointed to herself and then to Nanako's eyes.
"No... don't... don't be sad..." Nezuko said as she gently patted Nanako's head.
Nanako stood still, seemingly caught off guard. Her eyes turned slightly red, as though she was reminded of something, or perhaps felt that her disguise had been seen through.
Feng Yu furrowed his brow and spoke, "Nanako, this is Nezuko. Like you, she lost her family to demons, and she was turned into one herself. She also has a brother, Tanjiro, who should still be training in the mountains. You two should get to know each other."
"Demon... family..." Nanako murmured, not expecting this adorable girl in front of her to be a demon like the one who killed her mother. She studied Nezuko closely.
Aside from her red eyes and the bamboo she held in her mouth, Nezuko seemed just like any other person.
After all, Nanako had greenish-blue eyes, just without the bamboo.
"Y-You... hello..." Nanako said, trying to push away her unease as she extended her hand.
However, Nezuko suddenly hugged her tightly and gently stroked Nanako's head.
The unexpected action left Nanako speechless, but she quickly pulled away, hiding behind Feng Yu.
"Master Feng Yu, she's so strange..." Nanako whispered, peeking her head out.
"Nezuko, what's going on?" Feng Yu asked, concerned.
"Family... family..." Nezuko muttered.
"Family?" Feng Yu was confused, looking between Nezuko and Nanako, not understanding why Nezuko had said that.
Sakonji Urokodaki interjected, "Perhaps Nezuko sensed the sadness in Nanako's heart from losing her family."
"Is that so?" Feng Yu asked, turning his gaze to Nezuko.
Nezuko nodded cutely.
"Alright, let's eat," Sakonji said, trying to move things along.
Feng Yu nodded, and then pulled out several cleansing pills, handing them to Nezuko.
As soon as Nezuko saw the pills, her mouth watered, and a look of pure happiness spread across her face.
