Chapter 4: Capital City, Crown
***×××***
Narrator POV
It was a nice day in the City. The sun was at the center of the sky and the breeze was nice. The day couldn't be any better.
*Snatch!*
"Uwaaa! Waahhhhhh! Mommy, he stole my Canddyyyy!" And the kid's day is ruined.
However, his mother was clueless. "Hu-huh? What? Where? I don't see anyone. You must have imagined it, Chickaletta, maybe you already finished it?" However, his mother didn't believe him, poor kid.
"That's not it, mommy, wahhhhh!!"
*Crunch!* *Crunch!* *Crunch!*
*Gulp!*
"Mmm...This Candy is not bad, the kid's got taste." And the person who ruined the kid's day is none other than Douglas, enjoying the candy like it's none of his business. "But what kind of name is Chickaletta? So lame. It sounds like a Chicken's name. Well, not my business. Still, this City reeks of corruption, but I've yet to find any criminals acting in the Alleyways. Could it be that Criminals are smart enough not to use Alleyways during daylight anymore? Hah! Amusing."
It's been a few hours since his Awakening and strolling around the City. Listening to the gossip of the people, Douglas heard many interesting and useful informations, like the name of the City for example.
'Crown City, the capital of the great Khanari Nation. Fitting to be the capital city of a Great Nation, I suppose. I should check the Crimes in this city tonight, to gauge the danger level of this place. Even if I'm reborn and my body is still as strong as ever, there exists a thing called magic here, so I can't let my guard down. Everyone I have encountered used Magic one way or the other, even if they are harmless, so it's safe to assume that even simple thugs could defeat me. Though, if I strike first before they Chant, I can easily kill them first, but I shouldn't let my guard down.'
Crouching down, Douglas took a handful of Sand from the Playground and put it in his pocket until his right pocket was full of Sand. Nobody paid any attention to it since it's not that uncommon to see a child taking something strange back home with them.
A few kids tried to approach him, but they quickly fled when they got near him due to the scary aura he gave off. It's not Killing Intent or anything, it's a natural aura of a formidable fighter, that's all.
"You! Why did you steal that candy from him?!" From behind him, a kid around his age called out.
'Hmm?'
It was a girl, seemingly fragile, but there is an aura of strength. Not great, but surprising for her age. She was shaking a bit due to the Aura that Douglas emits, but doesn't seem to be affected that much.
'Isn't this the girl with Miyuki yesterday? Did she see me steal that kid's candy? Probably. What a pain, I can't shut her up like I usually do to others. I wouldn't want that old man hunting me my whole life. Although he is a wimp, I can sense great strength in him.'
"Answer my question! Why did you steal it?!" She has got quite the balls, too.
"Hm? What could you possibly mean, kid?" He was playing dumb. Yeah, it could work.
"Don't call me a kid, you're the same age as me! And don't try to fake i-igno...igni...ignn...ugh...Don't try to fake it, I saw it! You even made him cry, you're horrible! Apologize!!"
"I don't have the time to be scolded by a kid who can't even say ignorance. And you're trying to lecture me? Try again in another...let's see...yes, try again in another Eternity. Pffftt hahahahaha!"
"You...you're so mean! If you don't apologize now, I will tell daddy!" Well...that seems to be her last resort since she probably felt that there was nothing she could do against him.
"Get lost, kid. There ain't anything you can do about it, where's your evidence? Oh right, it's in my stomach, too bad! Also, do you think anyone would care? They'll just brush it off as kids fight. And don't disturb me anymore, I'm trying to think."
Douglas turned his back on her and was about to walk away but he felt a hand on his shoulder, stopping him. He looked back and saw that kid looking determined, not intending to let go. He moved his shoulder and hit her with his elbow square in the face, sending her flying a bit, but he made sure to not hurt her.
'Fuck my reflexes, the old man's gonna kill me...ah, whatever, what's done is done.'
*Thud!*
"Ughhh!"
He began walking away without looking back. Then, he felt a sharp gaze from his back, aimed at him. He was a bit surprised when he felt it, it has been a long time since he felt it. That gaze filled with hatred.
'Resentment. How long has it been since I've been glared at like that? No one was brave enough to glare at me like that anymore. I only ever received fearful glares, and you're telling me this kid is glaring at me like that? Interesting. Very interesting!'
Douglas looked back with a grin akin to the devil, and the glare of resentment faltered a bit, but it stood strong again after a moment of faltering. That only made Douglas's grin wider and more devilish, and he released his Aura, making the kids around him cry. He forgot that this was a playground.
Without saying anything, he left soon after. The kid sighed in relief and fell to the ground. It took everything for her just to resist the terrifying grin filled with bloodlust of a person who has killed many people, although it was only a mock bloodlust. Nevertheless, she is a strong person, she recovered from it soon after and left too.
As for Douglas, he ventured around the City for a bit more to get himself familiar with the structure and locations of the houses, etc. Nighttime came and he returned quickly. He skipped breakfast, so he was hungry all day.
*Creak~*
"Ugh, I'm hungry...when's dinner?"
"Huh? Douglas? Oh...oh! I forgot about you! Hahaha, sorry. But there are still some leftovers if you are hungry...?"
How could anyone forget about something like that? Douglas was this close to cracking his nuts...thiiiisssss much...
"...more importantly, where are the leftovers? I forgot to eat breakfast, so I'm hungry."
"They are in the kitchen. By the way, after you finish it, can we talk?"
'That was strange,' Douglas thought to himself, 'Had he found out about the incident? That was probably it. Well, there was no problem with agreeing either.'
"Huh? What's with the sudden talk? Well, since I have nothing else to do, I suppose it's fine."
With that said, Douglas headed to the Kitchen, leaving an annoyed Cain behind. His nonchalant attitude annoyed Cain a bit, but he just shrugged it off since Douglas is just a kid and it isn't worth it. That's what he told himself at least. Whatever makes him sleep well at night.
As expected of a leftover, it truly was a leftover; there was only a handful of Rice and some side dishes. Nevertheless, food is food, it's only for survival, no need to be so picky about it. Once he finished the leftovers, he headed to the living room to talk with Cain.
"So what do you wanna talk about? Don't tell me it's some boring law bullshit?" Well, he was playing ignorant but Douglas was about 89% sure it was about the incident.
"It's not about that...*Sigh~* I heard from my daughter, Sara, that you stole a kid's Candy. Is that true?"
Of course, what else but that? They haven't known each other for long, so there was nothing important to talk about.
"She was so terrified as well when she told me, so what did you do to my daughter? I don't want any lies, understood?"
Cain's eyes became serious as the atmosphere thickened. Normal people would be suffocating from it, but Douglas was used to such a bloodlust, he felt it every day from his Grandfather, after all. Cain was taken aback by Douglas being unaffected, but he hides it well.
He was even more surprised when Douglas released bloodlust. 'No wonder my daughter was afraid, no child could ever resist bloodlust of this level. It's suffocating and the scent of Blood is thick...'
Both he and Douglas had a staredown, neither of them intending to back down. If you were to exaggerate it, you could say that it's a clash between a Dragon and a Tiger, the famous Rivals thought to be equal.
Seeing that Douglas isn't backing down, Cain could only sigh and retract his bloodlust as it was ineffective to use it any longer. Douglas wasn't affected by it at all. You could even say that Cain bloodlust was a bit lacking compared to Douglas's own.
He was kind by nature, and he wasn't actually trying to kill Douglas, so he was bound to lose.
On the other hand, Douglas was actually trying to kill him, which isn't gonna result in a healthy confrontation. So he decided to do it like a civilized person and talk it out.
"*Sigh~* Alright, let's talk this out instead of doing it like this. Let us hear what you have to say, Douglas."
"I did steal a kid's Candy, and I don't regret it because it tasted great. And I scared the shit out of that kid because she was acting all righteous, basically being annoying. I don't like it. Simple as that, case solved, meeting over; I'm gonna go rest, all the walking has made me tired."
Douglas walked away without saying anything else. Cain was annoyed, very annoyed. But he could only sigh as it wasn't the former's fault that Sara decided to interfere. It would be a different case if this is the Police Station of Douglas's past life or somewhere similar, but this isn't a place like that, so there isn't such a kind of law.
Attempted murder was not judged here.
Once Douglas stepped outside, he sensed a presence beside him. Looking to his side, it was Miyuki. You don't need to be a genius to deduce that she has been eavesdropping the whole time.
"Greetings, Douglas." At least she greeted him with a smile...
"Miyuki. What do you want?"
"Nothing. I was just a bit interested in the talk. But I never thought that idiot would release bloodlust. I'm even more impressed by you taking it head-on without flinching even a bit. Are you sure you really aren't an old man in the body of a kid?"
"I already told you, have I not? I do not possess the power to do something like that. I'm just that much better than my peers. Well, I'm tired, so I'll be taking my leave."
Without waiting for a reply, he went directly to his room. He fell to the bed and immediately fell asleep. However, Miyuki remained there, leaning on the wall while contemplating something.
'Douglas...he is a strange kid, what kind of teachings did he receive? That bloodlust I felt was unnatural, you need to kill at least tens of hundreds of people to have that kind of bloodlust. I don't think that idiot noticed it since he isn't the brightest, but that kid's bloodlust is at least at a level much greater than his. Depending on how he is raised, he could be a great ally or a terrifying enemy.'
Miyuki shivered like she saw the greatest fear of her life. 'I don't even wanna imagine another genius falling to the dark side. One was enough, but another with the possibility to be one is right here, living with us. The only thing I can do is hope, hope that he doesn't fall to the dark side.'
Soon after, she left as well.
