Chapter 10: The Cat's Challenge & Unfamiliar Words
The chaos hit us before we even stepped outside. Jamyang and I sprinted out of the subway as we heard the screams of panicked civilians ringing in our ears.
"There!!" I said, pointing at the building.
The demonic white cat, now of the same size as the black one stood atop a building, shining in the sun's glare, its fur gleaming like marble. Blood dripped from its sharp claws and fangs that has the remnants of the human it killed and the grin on its face twisted into something scary.
"Come… let's see what you humans really got," it hissed, its voice unnervingly feminine, laced with dark amusement. Its crimson eyes scanned the fleeing crowd as if choosing its next target.
"Get inside!" Jamyang shouted to the panicked people, her commanding voice cutting through the chaos. "Find shelter and stay there!"
She turned to me, her fists clenched, the faint aura of her energy shimmering. "Adrian, we need to take it down before it kills anyone else."
Before I could respond, the demon leapt from its place, a blur of white streaking toward us. Its claws slashed through the air with a wicked hiss, aimed directly at me. Instinct kicked in as I bent my knees and sprang upward, meeting the creature mid-air with my dagger in hand.
Our weapons clashed—its claws against my blade—sending a sharp, metallic screech reverberating through the air. I twisted mid-air, narrowly avoiding its snapping jaws, and landed a shallow cut along its side. The demon howled in irritation, spinning on me with a speed that left me barely enough time to evade its counterattack.
"Wait for me!!!" Jamyang wasted no time. She jumped in between with her enthusiasm, her foot slamming into the demon's side. The impact echoed like a thunderclap, sending the creature skidding back across the pavement.
It recovered quickly, though, and with a guttural growl, grabbed Jamyang's leg in its jaws.
"Ohh shit!" she grunted as the demon threw her through the air like a ragdoll. She crashed into the side of a parked car, denting the metal with a sickening crunch.
"Tch," I muttered, vanishing in a blur of speed. My blade sliced cleanly through the air as I reappeared beside the demon. It tried to dodge, but I was faster. My dagger grazed its shoulder, drawing a thin line of black blood. The demon snarled, its irritation growing.
"Humans," it spat, licking its wound. "So pesky… but this game is far from over."
Its smirk widened as it crouched low, gathering a swirling aura in its mouth. The temperature around us dropped, the air crackling with malevolent energy.
"Jamyang, move!" I shouted, sensing the build-up.
The demon let out an ear-splitting screech, the sound turning into a visible shockwave that was aimed toward Jamyang. The sheer force of the attack shattered windows and obliterated the wall of a nearby building, leaving a big wide hole in its wake.
I surged forward, grabbing Jamyang and leaping clear of the blast just in time. We sat to the ground, the debris raining down around us.
"You okay?" I asked, brushing dust off my hoodie as I stood.
Jamyang's response was a strange laugh, her grin stretched ear to ear.
"Finally… I got it...I got it..I got it!!! A fucking worty opponent!!" she said, her eyes gleaming with a manic light.
Inside, I sighed and thought that few hours ago I was thinking that she's normal.
Jamyang launched herself back into the fight with renewed mood, her energy radiating like a storm. She met the demon head-on, her punches and kicks landing with bone-crushing force. The ground beneath their clash cracked and splintered, the entire area becoming a battlefield of destruction.
The demon snarled and retaliated with wild, slashing claws, but Jamyang didn't stop. She was laughing, yelling, and throwing herself into the fight like she was having the time of her life.
"You're enjoying this way too much," I muttered, staying on the sidelines for now, observing them and waiting for my chance.
But the demon wasn't done. It darted toward the crowd, its eyes locking on a child who had tripped in the chaos. The boy sat frozen in terror, unable to move as the demon closed in.
"Jamyang!" I shouted,
but she had already noticed.
She changed away from her attack, leaping between the demon and the child. Her arms in between of the boy as she took the brunt of the demon's paw, her body slamming into the ground under its weight.
"Now I got you.." the demon hissed, pressing down harder.
"Arghhh-" she urged in pain.
But spitting blood, Jamyang's smirk didn't waver, even as the ground beneath her cracked under the pressure.
"Of course," she said through gritted teeth. "But it won't change anything."
"Is that so?" The demon laughed, its mouth opening as it began to gather energy for another devastating blast. This time, it was point-blank, aimed directly at Jamyang.
"Yes, I love it and more than that I love strong boys." Said Jamyang, with a playful smile.
"Hey… look here." My voice cut through the tension.
The demon's head snapped toward me, its crimson eyes narrowing. I stood on side of the building, crouched low with my dagger in hand. Black aura surged around me, coiling like smoke, and my eyes burned with determination.
I launched myself forward in a blur of speed, the black aura trailing behind me like a shadow. The air around us seemed to still, the world narrowing to just me and the demon.
And then, in one clean, decisive strike, my blade met its neck.
The force of the attack was silent, like the sharpest scissor in this world slicing paper.
The demon's body crumpled, its head severed cleanly from its shoulders.
*Thud*
It hit the ground with a dull thud, its crimson eyes dimming as the life was draining from its body.
I landed lightly on my feet, the black aura dissipating as I straightened.
"Phew," Jamyang said, dusting herself off as she stood. She looked at the boy, who was now clinging to her leg. "Well, that was fun."
I shot her a look, my expression unreadable. "You really are insane."
She grinned, ruffling the boy's hair before looking back at me. "And you're not half bad. Guess we make a good team after all."
Sighhh* I didn't respond, simply desummoning my dagger
"You are a...vessel..." The cat whispered, its voice barely more than a breath escaping its cracked lips.
I glanced down at it, not even bothering to hide the boredom in my expression.
"What?" I asked, my voice flat.
The creature's lips curled into a weak, almost mocking grin.
"Sloth's vessel... Hehehe..." It chuckled faintly, the sound barely audible, before its eyes fluttered shut, and its body stilled on the cold floor.
