Chapter 242: Rick Conway (2)
[A/N- I honestly wouldn't recommend this to soft hearted.]
Rick spent the whole night all alone in one corner of his home. His young mind was trying to comprehend why his father was angry at him. What wrong did he do?
However, no matter what he did, he couldn't understand. He only knew that his father was going through a lot because of him and he needed to do something to help him.
The next morning, his father decided to take him somewhere which made Rick very happy. He thought his father had forgiven him for whatever wrong he committed.
As they walked on the empty road, Rick asked, having a smile plastered on his face.
"Where are we going, Dad?"
Jason looked down at his son and the face that he had adored felt disgusting to him. That smile, he hated it. Because of him, Jason had lost everything and he was still smiling.
Jason clenched his jaw and said nothing. He just looked ahead at a particular building and thought.
'I hope you forgive me, Dear. I can't handle all of this anymore.'
To Rick's surprise, his father took him to a big building. His eyes shone in excitement as he looked at everything, finding it beautiful.
He was going to ask something but his father suddenly stopped and said.
"Listen to me, Rick. I'm giving you a task. No matter what happens, don't open your mouth until I allow you, okay?"
Although he didn't understand anything, Rick still nodded. He would do anything for his father.
Afterwards, an old man came to meet them at the big building's entrance gate. He wore simple robes and had a bald head with a kind face that made him very approachable.
To Rick's confusion, the old man looked at him with eyes full of pity. As he had been under constant scorn and hate, Rick had developed a sense of recognition where he could understand other people's emotions towards him to some extent.
He was confused and even more when his father talked something quietly with the old man. He wanted to ask but since his father had not allowed him, he kept his mouth shut and looked around the garden.
After some time, Jason finished his talk with the old man and turned towards Rick. His gaze was hard and indescribable, as he patted Rick's head and said.
"Stay here, okay? I have some work so I'll come back later."
Rick's small head bobbed up and down as he had no problems with it. After all, Jason often left him alone at home due to his work.
Jason sighed looking at his son, feeling guilt washing over him. He turned his head and looked at the sign hung on the building.
The Orphanage.
After everything that happened with him, Jason was exhausted and traumatized. He had already lost everything and didn't want to continue down on the road. So he had decided to get away from the root of all problems.
However, he still couldn't bring himself to either kill his child or leave him all alone on the street. It would be too cruel for him.
He sighed and thought.
'Maybe his luck will change in the orphanage and he will have a better life.'
He then turned around and left for good. He couldn't handle it anymore.
Rick waved his hand with a smile on his face. But then he realised that he couldn't really speak since his father had not given him permission to do so.
The old man crouched near him and said.
"Your name is Rick, right? Let's go inside."
Rick found the old man good since he didn't see him the same way others did. So, he smiled and nodded. Sadly, he couldn't speak.
The day passed by and Rick enjoyed his time in the orphanage. He made many new friends and the old man named Andrew was also very good to him.
He was happy but still missed his father. In the evening, he went near the gate and waited there for an hour. Many people passed by, giving the child curious gazes but none of them was his father.
Sun set below the horizon, making the world shrouded in darkness, and only the lights of the building illuminated the world.
Rick sat on the stone pathway, his head hanging low. His father had not come like usual. Perhaps he was busy. He would come the next day. Rick knew he would.
So, when Andrew came and took him back, he just smiled at him to not make him worried. He slept alongside his new friends, which was very fun for him.
The next day was similar but Rick couldn't enjoy it fully since he couldn't talk and was also worried about his father. His friends asked him many times to talk but he always shook his head.
He was a good child and would never disobey his father.
The day passed by and the evening was also the same. Rick continued to look in the street with hopeful eyes, wondering why he had not come yet.
He didn't come.
Andrew once again took him back and asked him if something was bothering him. Rick tried to tell him, but failed to do so without speech. He also didn't know writing that well to write it for him.
He was just around five years old, after all.
Rick's hope slowly died down over the next few days when Jason didn't return. He was worried and even stopped playing with his friends. Instead, he spent all of his time with some of the elders who taught him writing.
In the next one year, Rick didn't speak for a single time and stood at the gate every morning and evening. His eyes always searching for his father.
Unfortunately, he was bound to be disappointed.
He had also learned how to write and was going to show Andrew the note he wrote. It contained all of his problems and worries. He was hopeful, as he considered Andrew as a dependable person.
He had taken care of Rick for so long, after all.
Reaching his room, Rick gave the notebook to him and sat beside him. His eyes twinkling with hope as he waited for Andrew. His heart pounded against his chest.
"What are you talking about, Rick? He wasn't your father."
