Chapter 7: Reward After The Struggle

Tang San was absorbing the soul ring, and it looked like it was going to take a long time. Chao wasn't scared of the soul beast, since Chief Lang was there. But the 'Reward' he got this time was clearly dangerous.

Instead of a reward, it felt like a warning or a punishment. A reward should not try to kill him. It would have been understandable if it said that Chao had to defeat it, but the first sentence made it clear that the main purpose was for the soul beast to kill him.

Chief Lang sat down on the ground, waiting for Tang San to finish absorbing his spirit ring. He looked to be resting, but he was wary of his surroundings. Chief Lang was focused on protecting Tang San and Chao.

Chao could feel the green snake getting closer to him. It felt like their minds were linked. Chao was able to tell it's location more accurately closer it got. Based on the soul beast's speed, Chao thought it was some kind of tiger.

Chao was freaking out. He could feel the murderous intent of the snake through their linked minds, which made him shake in fear.

Instinctively, he activated his martial spirit, and braced for impact.

The snake wasn't that far anymore. Even Chief Lang could sense him. He activated his martial spirit and disappeared. His actions did not calm Chao down. He could feel the snake getting closer with the same speed as before.

The snake was clearly not slowing down, it even increased it's speed. Chao could already see him. It was a black, scaled Python. But instead of being dark green, it was more of a light green shade.

The snake rushed towards Chao. It's body was covered in cuts, but it didn't slow down at all. It pounced at Chao, trying to bite his head off. It was so fast, Chao couldn't react at all. Right as he was about to become the Snake's new Chew toy, Chief Lang swooped in and saved him.

The python wasn't confused. It seemed like not only could Chao sense it, but it could also sense Chao. It rushed towards Chao, trying to kill him as fast as possible. This time, Chief Lang decided to attack more provocatively, but the snake ignored him again. It rushed forward, but it's speed was clearly slower.

It pounced again, trying to eat Chao in one bite, but this time Chao was able to react. He quickly dodged backwards, avoiding the danger all together. The python rushed towards him, but this time it didn't try to bite him. The python opened it's mouth trying to spit on him. Chao didn't see anything, but he could feel the danger. He quickly distanced himself from the python, but it was too late.

His arm felt like it was on fire. Chao looked down to find his arm burning. Not with fire, but with acid. Chao yelled in pain. His scream could be heard throughout the whole forest.

Even though Chao wasn't a wuss in the real world, nothing could prepare him for this type of pain.

The python didn't give him any time, and kept attacking him. Chief Lang was beginning to panic, this python was fixated on killing Chao. Nothing he did mattered at all, the snake just wanted to kill Chao.

He knew Chao wouldn't be able to hold on for long, so he had to finish this quick. He started attacking the python like nothing mattered. Chief Lang blinded the python, but it didn't try to defend itself. It just kept attacking Chao.

Chao was getting pushed around by the python. Chao was in tremendous pain because of the acid melting his hand. Even his adrenaline wouldn't be able to get him through this pain. Chao was reaching his limit, but so was the python.

The vitality of this python was amazing, but it couldn't survive many more cuts from Chief Lang. The python was getting slower, Chao could see some parts of flesh falling off the python's body.

This gave him hope. Chao just had to outlast this stupid snake, and everything would be fine.

The python opened it's mouth to spit on Chao once again, but this time he was able to react. He avoided the python's mouth, and went in the totally opposite direction. The python chased after him, making Chao feel like this thing would never give up.

It kept chasing after him when Chao finally made a decision. Chao turned around and charged at him. The python tried to bite chao's head off, but Chao avoided it's big mouth and reached the python's neck.

Chief Lang was about to save Chao when he saw Chao biting the snake. The snake started shaking, and it's body started shivering as a dark green color started spreading around it's body. The snake struggled trying to get Chao off, but all of it's efforts were in vain.

After a while, the python stopped moving, and a yellow ring rose from it's body.

The ring wasn't dark at all, which was weird since this soul beast was way too strong.

If somebody said it was a thousand years old, Chao would believe it.

Chao fell on the ground, the pain was too much for him to take anymore. The adrenaline that was keeping him going was gone, and the only thing left was the burning sensation from the acid. He started screaming on the top of his lungs, barely able to stay awake.

Chief Lang came close to him and covered his mouth. "Tang San is still absorbing his soul ring, and we also found a soul ring for you. We don't want any other soul beasts to show up because of your screaming, so you should absorb it quickly."

Chao nodded and bit his other arm, trying to distract himself from the painful burns. He walked towards the Black scaled Python and sat infront of it. He took a deep breath and pulled the yellow soul ring towards him.

Everything changed around him. He saw giant buildings that looked to be from earth. It was empty, but at least it was familiar. At the corner of his eye, Chao saw something. It was the black scaled Python.

It's eyes were dark black, and it rushed towards Chao trying to pounce. Chao could feel it wasn't as fast as in real life. He activated his martial spirit, and started fighting it. Chao couldn't feel the pain at this moment, which made it easier for him to fight.

Since Chao already knew the snake's fighting pattern, he was beating it without suffering any injuries. The python tried using acid multiple times, but Chao saw it coming, and dodged it. As long as he avoided being in the direct line of sight, he would be fine.

Chao kept hitting the python, and it's whole body was bloody. It clearly couldn't go on longer, while Chao wasn't even sweating.

Finally, the python fell and looked to be giving up. Finally, Chao walked towards it and put his hand on it.

"Listen, I'm really sorry you have to go this way. If there was any other way, trust me, I wouldn't have hurt you, but it was you or me. I'm pretty sure After I absorb you, you will dissappear, but I want you to know that I'll remember you. Goodbye!"

Chao sighed and as he was about to kill it, the python turned into pure soul power and rushed towards him. It entered his body so fast, Chao couldn't even think about running away. He felt a huge amount of soul power ignite inside of his body.

Surprisingly, this didn't hurt at all, and even felt comfortable. Chao had no idea what was going on, his soul power was going crazy. Before he knew it, he broke through the eleventh level, which was followed by the twelfth level and finally, it stopped right before breaking through the thirteenth level.

Chao had no idea how to cultivate, so he couldn't even brute force his way to break through the thirteenth level. The soul power settled down inside of him, and he finally woke up.

Chief Lang and Tang San were waiting for him to finish absorbing his spirit ring for hours. During this wait period, no soul beast came close. Tang San looked worried. He could see the melted skin on Chao's arm.

Chief Lang didn't tell him what happened, but he knew something really dangerous attacked them. The trees around him were melted and decaying. The giant python's body was radiating dangerous aura.

Chao finally got up. The pain he felt couldn't be described. He kept biting his other hand, trying to distract himself from the melted one.

He walked towards Chief Lang as fast as he could. "Can we go back already, I feel like I could use some sleep."

Both of them felt awkward talking, so they just went back towards the exit. Neither of them even asked Chao about his new soul skill. Both of them were curious about the soul skill that he got from this Python, but neither of them were cold enough to ask about it.

Even though Chao was in pain, he was still happy. The soul skill that he got was the best of the best. It was the one skill that everyone wanted, no matter their strength. It was the skill that gave him a Domain, and a strong one at that.

It was a poison domain. When he activates this Domain, a colorless acid would spread everywhere in a thirty meter radius, and this would double every twenty levels. He would have full control over this acid, which meant he could control who would get burned.

It also gave him the ability to modify the strength of the acid, which meant he could use it in friendly competitions. This domain also gave him the ability to decrease everybody's resistance to poison in his domain by 20%, and this would double when he reached level forty and seventy.

His poison would become stronger by a tenth of the resistance he took away, which right now was 2%. Finally, he would gain immunity to any poison, as long as they weren't twenty levels above him.

When Chao realised how good this domain was, he was shocked. The System said it would be the perfect soul ring, but it was way too good. It was better than a hundred thousand year old soul ring. This is when system clarified:

'A reward for changing history and being the first human being to successfully merge a soul beast in your martial spirit has been granted.'
