Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Sneaking Away
Little Bulma sat on a chair next to the hospital bed, holding a large apple in her small hands. Using her not-yet-fully-grown milk teeth, she nibbled away at it with crisp bites. Her lively, bright eyes occasionally glanced at Yamiru, who lay on the opposite bed with his head wrapped in layers of white bandages.
Mrs. Briefs had stayed for a while but soon left. Dr. Briefs, however, was nowhere to be seen.
Crunch, crunch… The quiet hospital room was filled only with the cheerful sound of apple munching.
Feeling uneasy with the atmosphere, the pig-headed man kept darting his small eyes toward Bulma, who was swinging her thin little legs off the edge of the chair. He couldn't hold back anymore and asked, "Hey, are you really only two years old?"
"Yes," Bulma replied casually, seemingly used to being asked this question.
"No way… That's too weird." Tonpo felt like he'd seen a ghost. The youngest kids he'd met who could hold a proper conversation were at least three or four years old. How could a two-year-old girl be so sharp and clever? Suspiciously, he added, "You don't look it. Just like this guy over here—looks like a ten-year-old brat but acts way beyond his age!" He tapped Yamiru's leg, only to get a retaliatory kick from under the blanket.
"It's because I'm really smart," Bulma said, her cheeks puffed out as she spoke around a mouthful of apple. "Daddy tested me—I'm super clever!"
Tonpo rolled his eyes. "Even if you're smart, being able to make something like that magic-looking gun at two years old is just too outrageous!"
Before Yamiru had been taken into surgery, he had asked Bulma about the energy gun she used. Its single-shot power was comparable to a Kamehameha, something he found impossible to ignore.
"That's not so outrageous," Bulma said casually as she gulped down another bite of apple, her mouth glistening with juice. She barely paid attention to Tonpo's question as her focus remained on the fruit. "There are people way smarter than me. Daddy says Dr. Gero from the north, Dr. Senbei Norimaki from the east, and Dr. Dazen from the center are all brilliant scientists."
"You're kidding…" Tonpo muttered, feeling a growing inferiority complex. He wiped away a bead of snot trickling from his pig-like nose and sulked, thinking to himself how stupid he felt compared to this little girl. And of course, none of the geniuses she mentioned were animal people—no wonder his kind were seen as less intelligent.
Bulma finished her apple, leaving only the core. She wiped her mouth and said, "Oh, and my daddy is super smart too!"
The door to the room creaked open, and Dr. Briefs walked in alone. As usual, he wore his signature look: black-rimmed glasses, a simple white lab coat, and a cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth. Perched on his shoulder was a soft, jet-black kitten. Entering the room, he casually took the apple core from his daughter's hand and tossed it into the trash bin. Puffing on his cigarette, he asked, "Why am I being praised? What are you all chatting about?"
Yamiru, lying on the opposite bed, chuckled and explained the conversation. He then added, "Speaking of that, I remembered running into a young boy a few days ago who was training under a fighting coach. He's probably about the same age as Bulma. Definitely not as smart as her, but he seemed pretty mature for his age. It looked like he was already starting training at two or three years old."
"People like that do exist," Dr. Briefs nodded. "The mysteries of the human body are incredibly complex. I've heard that Dr. Gero in the north has delved deeply into such studies, though I can't say for certain."
Yamiru blinked his shining golden eyes and added, "I've heard of a group of people called martial artists. Some of the most powerful among them can even fly without any equipment and project their energy outward to create laser-like attacks..."
"I've heard rumors too, though I've never seen it with my own eyes. It's hard to say whether such tales are true," Dr. Briefs said, exhaling a puff of smoke. "However, supernatural abilities undoubtedly exist on this planet. For instance, there's the magic of our animal-person friend here, or the extraordinary powers you and most of the students at this school possess. These phenomena are documented in ancient historical texts and various folklore collections."
Yamiru nodded, recalling how in the original story, Bulma had stumbled upon mentions of the Dragon Balls in some obscure book. Perhaps her family truly had a collection of related texts.
"It might be true. Books say that tens of thousands of years ago, Earth was crawling with terrifying demons and monsters," little Bulma said cheerfully, swinging her lovely legs as she sat by the bed. Flashing a mischievous smile at Tonpo, she added, "Many books also claim that animal people are linked to the legends of those ancient monsters. No wonder you all look so ugly."
"Stupid brat! Rotten girl!' Tonpo's pig nose twisted in anger as he snapped, "You're supposed to be a scientist, yet you believe in demons and monsters? How ridiculous!"
"Who said I want to be a scientist?" Bulma hopped off the chair, landing firmly on the ground with a little "oof." She patted her fluffy dress and declared, "I won't be a scientist!"
"You're so smart, yet you don't plan on following in your father's footsteps?" Tonpo was stunned. Even someone like him, who could barely read, was familiar with the legendary technological empire Dr. Briefs had built. Capsule Corporation's innovations had become integral to the lives of people across the globe.
Bulma found Tonpo's question strange and decided to ignore him. After all, he was just an ugly pig.
Dr. Briefs merely smiled warmly. Seeing Tonpo's confusion, he explained gently, "It's her life, after all. We can't interfere with what she chooses to do."
"Exactly!" Bulma nodded emphatically at her father's feet.
From his hospital bed, Yamiru couldn't help but admire the genius of Bulma and the supportive environment in her family.
Finally, Dr. Briefs couldn't resist asking about Yamiru's eyes. "During your tests, did you intentionally conceal some of your abilities?"
"Not exactly concealed," Yamiru replied, satisfying the scientist's curiosity with a straightforward answer. "Even I didn't anticipate the immunity to Blu's psychic powers. It was mostly luck—pure luck."
"I see..." Dr. Briefs murmured thoughtfully, taking another drag from his cigarette.
"I must be part of your luck too!" Little Bulma raised her hand enthusiastically, her tone filled with curiosity. "Maybe your superpower is just having good luck?"
"Haha..." Yamiru thought to himself, 'If my power was lucky, wyy wasn't i born among the Saiyans?' But on second thought, he realized that being healthy, unscathed, and awakening a seemingly extraordinary pair of eyes was indeed a stroke of great fortune. With that in mind, a sense of peace and contentment washed over him. He chuckled softly and said, "Maybe so."
Before Dr. Briefs and Bulma left, Yamiru said, "In any case, we owe this time to Bulma. If it weren't for her, Tonpo and I might have been in real danger. Oh, and the medical expenses too. If I ever get the chance, I'll make sure to visit and thank you properly in West City..."
'Good thing he didn't include me in that!' Tonpo thought, rolling his eyes internally. He had no interest in traveling all the way to West City.
"Get some rest," Dr. Briefs said with a warm smile before leaving with his daughter.
"What a hypocrite!" Tonpo sneered as soon as they were out of earshot. "They're so rich; do they even care if you repay those medical bills? You're just pretending to be polite!"
"Their wealth is their business, but repaying what I owe is mine," Yamiru replied as he pulled back the hospital blanket. Grabbing both of Tonpo's pig ears, he added with irritation, "And you dare to look down on me? Have you forgotten how I beat you into a pig-headed mess before?"
"They're going to tear off!" Tonpo yelped, standing on tiptoe in pain. "I'm already a pig-headed mess, so stop, alright?"
Yamiru let go, then changed out of his hospital gown into his own freshly cleaned clothes, free of bloodstains.
"What are you doing? Leaving already?" Tonpo glanced at the white bandages wrapped around Yamiru's head.
"I'm not dying," Yamiru replied with an eye roll. He opened the outer window of the hospital room, letting in a gust of wind. "Alright, this is where we part ways. I'm heading home on my own."
With that, he stepped onto the windowsill and leapt out.
"Hey, wait!" Tonpo leaned out the window, only to see Yamiru's figure disappearing into the bushes below the third floor. He shouted, "Are you really planning to visit West City someday?"
Yamiru didn't answer. After rolling to a stop on the grass below, he got up and ran forward without looking back. As he ran, he raised a middle finger toward the third-floor window where Tonpo stood... then turned it into a casual wave. His steps became lighter, and soon he had passed through the Academy gates. Turning a corner, he vanished from sight.
