Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Fractured Nexus
The chamber trembled violently as the Nexus core began to destabilize, its pulsating energy radiating waves of power that felt like a living heartbeat. Each pulse grew louder, stronger, threatening to tear the chamber apart.
Jiho wiped blood from the corner of his mouth, his sharp gaze never leaving Taejin. The guild leader stood between them and the Nexus core, his barrier flickering but holding firm. Despite his smug grin, Jiho could see the strain in his opponent's stance. Taejin was powerful, but the core's instability was affecting him too.
Haeun limped to Jiho's side, her left arm cradled against her chest. She was breathing heavily, but the determination in her eyes hadn't wavered. "What now? That barrier isn't going down easily."
Jiho didn't answer immediately. His shadows writhed around him, a reflection of his tumultuous thoughts. He glanced at the core, then at Taejin. There was a way to win this, but it wasn't without risks.
A Desperate Gamble
"We don't break the barrier," Jiho finally said, his voice low but resolute. "We overwhelm it."
Haeun blinked. "Overwhelm? With what?"
"The Nexus core," Jiho replied. His shadows extended toward the pulsing sphere, probing its energy. "It's unstable. If we channel its energy into the barrier, it'll collapse."
"Are you insane?" Haeun hissed. "If we mess this up, that thing will take us all out!"
"Do you have a better idea?" Jiho shot back, his tone sharp.
Haeun clenched her jaw but didn't argue further. She knew he was right. Taejin wasn't giving them any other options.
"Fine," she said. "But you owe me if we survive this."
Jiho smirked faintly. "Deal."
The Core's Wrath
As Haeun distracted Taejin with a flurry of feints and quick strikes, Jiho focused all his attention on the Nexus core. His shadows wrapped around it, intertwining with its chaotic energy. The core resisted, its power lashing out like a wild beast, but Jiho held firm.
Each pulse of energy sent shockwaves through his body, testing his limits. The core's power was overwhelming, unlike anything he had encountered before. But Jiho's will was ironclad. He channeled the energy carefully, directing it toward Taejin's barrier.
The first surge struck the barrier like a battering ram, causing it to ripple violently. Taejin's smug expression faltered as he realized what Jiho was doing.
"Stop!" Taejin roared, abandoning his focus on Haeun to hurl a blast of energy at Jiho.
Haeun intercepted the attack, her blade deflecting the worst of it, though the force sent her skidding across the chamber. "Keep going!" she shouted.
Jiho didn't need the encouragement. His shadows absorbed another surge from the core, amplifying its energy before slamming it into the barrier. Cracks began to form, spiderwebbing across the protective dome.
Breaking Point
Taejin growled, his composure cracking along with his barrier. "You don't understand what you're meddling with!" he bellowed. "The Nexus isn't just power—it's a gateway!"
"Then maybe it's a gateway you shouldn't have opened," Jiho retorted, his shadows striking the barrier one final time.
With a deafening crack, the barrier shattered, fragments of energy dissolving into the air. Taejin staggered, momentarily vulnerable. Jiho didn't hesitate. His shadows surged forward like a tidal wave, slamming into Taejin and sending him crashing into the ground.
The guild leader coughed, blood staining his lips. "You think...you've won?" he rasped, his voice laced with bitter amusement. "You've only delayed the inevitable. The Nexus...can't be controlled. Not by me, not by you."
Jiho stepped closer, his gaze cold. "Then it's time we put it to rest."
Unleashing the Core
Before Taejin could respond, Jiho turned his attention back to the core. It was even more unstable now, its glow flickering erratically. If they didn't act fast, the entire chamber—and everyone in it—would be obliterated.
"Haeun!" Jiho called. "We need to contain it!"
Haeun, battered but determined, joined him. Together, they worked to stabilize the core, using Jiho's shadows and Haeun's knowledge of runic inscriptions. The process was painstaking, every second feeling like an eternity as the core fought against their efforts.
Finally, with a final surge of energy, the core dimmed, its pulsating light reducing to a faint glow. The chamber grew eerily silent, the only sound their ragged breathing.
Aftermath
Taejin was unconscious, his body bound by Jiho's shadows. Haeun slumped against a wall, her injuries finally catching up to her. Jiho stood in the center of the chamber, his gaze fixed on the now-dormant core.
"We did it," Haeun said weakly, a hint of disbelief in her voice.
Jiho nodded, though his expression remained grim. "For now. But this isn't over."
Haeun frowned. "What do you mean?"
Jiho's shadows swirled around him, restless. "Taejin wasn't lying. The Nexus is more than just a source of power. It's connected to something...bigger. And we've just scratched the surface."
As they prepared to leave the chamber, Jiho's thoughts were already racing ahead. The fight with Taejin had revealed just how deep the Nexus's mysteries ran—and how dangerous they truly were.
Jiho knew one thing for certain: this was only the beginning.
