"Mom, Dad, I'm home!"
"Alice!"
Within her family home, Chelsea, flawlessly disguised as Alice, greeted her "parents" with a cheerful smile.
Surprised by their daughter's sudden return, Alice's parents immediately began preparing a feast.
After dinner, Chelsea excused herself, claiming she wanted a nap, and retreated to her room.
"Excellent. Preparations complete. Time for some covert action."
Opening the window and transforming into a cat, she swiftly scaled the roof. After confirming that no one was watching, Chelsea quickly made her way to the rendezvous point designated by Bulat before her infiltration of the Imperial Palace:
Lubbock's bookstore in the capital.
"Lubbock!"
"Chelsea?!"
Lubbock, who was leisurely reading in the bookstore, instantly recognized the cat's voice.
Chelsea had escaped the palace.
"You actually managed to get out of the palace alone?! You're amazing!"
"No time for pleasantries. Listen up!" Chelsea said quickly, still in her feline form.
Seeing her urgency, Lubbock immediately grabbed paper and ink from under the desk, preparing to take notes.
Chelsea nodded in approval and began relaying the intelligence she had gathered during her time in the palace.
"Based on the information I've collected, it's certain that the Emperor in the palace has been replaced."
"And they've completely taken control of the Empire in this short time."
"Trying to sow discord within the Empire by spreading this news won't work. Those in power, along with their mysterious backers, are way too strong."
Chelsea concluded grimly.
Meanwhile, Lubbock, frantically scribbling down her words, was drenched in sweat.
He hadn't anticipated such a drastic turn of events within the palace.
The imperial family, who had ruled the Empire for a thousand years, had been overthrown and replaced.
Through force, no less.
It was almost unbelievable.
"Did you get all of that?" Chelsea asked seriously.
"Yes, I have it all," Lubbock confirmed, nodding earnestly.
"Good. I can't stay long. I need to get back."
"But the intelligence gathering is done! There's no need for you to return!" Lubbock protested, trying to dissuade Chelsea from going back.
He knew full well the dangers of infiltrating the Imperial Palace. He couldn't bear the thought of Chelsea risking her life.
"Idiot, if I had a choice, I wouldn't go back!" Chelsea retorted, rolling her eyes. "Didn't I just tell you? Someone inside the palace is creating a new Teigu, and I've been marked by it."
"The Teigu user can track my location at any time. I can't escape."
Chelsea trusted Mika's words implicitly. After all, he had no reason to lie.
She had witnessed the power of the supposed new Teigu firsthand.
The existence of such a tracking-type Teigu was entirely plausible.
As for why she dared to deliver this information despite knowing she was being tracked, it was due to Chelsea's deduction.
She suspected that the tracking Teigu was in Mellie's possession.
She had heard from Mika himself that he wielded the Flaming Sword.
This suggested that his Teigu was flame-based.
However, on the streets earlier, Mika had used a second Teigu.
While this new Teigu's burden might be less than a standard Teigu, Chelsea believed it was likely his limit.
It seemed improbable that Mika would have a third Teigu.
That was why Chelsea had risked delivering this information despite knowing she was marked.
She didn't believe her true identity had been exposed.
It was unlikely that Mellie would simply observe her movements through the Teigu without taking further action.
"What are you going to do?!" Lubbock asked urgently, his voice filled with concern.
Though they hadn't fought side-by-side before,
They were still comrades.
Lubbock worried about Chelsea's safety.
"I'll have to remain undercover within the palace. But don't worry about me; I've earned the emperor's favor and been promoted to personal attendant."
"So, my treatment is excellent," Chelsea said, giving a thumbs-up in her cat form.
"But isn't that even more dangerous?"
Lubbock's worry intensified. Chelsea had described the emperor as the most dangerous individual.
Yet, here she was, an assassin, undercover right beside him.
It seemed incredibly risky.
After all, the current Chelsea wasn't the real Alice.
If Chelsea had infiltrated the palace using her true identity, Lubbock wouldn't be as concerned. He had faith in her acting skills.
But impersonating Alice was far more challenging.
"What other choice do I have? I'm trapped."
Shaking her head, Chelsea leaped from the bookshelf and vanished without a trace.
Watching her disappear, Lubbock sighed, lowering his outstretched hand.
He understood Chelsea's reluctance to flee.
As an assassin with ideals, being trapped within the enemy's stronghold was preferable to being useless.
As someone marked by the Empire, even if she escaped the capital, she could only flee beyond its borders.
She would never be able to carry out missions again.
Such an outcome was likely unacceptable to Chelsea.
"Take care, Chelsea!"
After a moment of silence, Lubbock swiftly departed, heading back to Night Raid's base to deliver the intelligence.
…
Sitting at a street stall, enjoying the local delicacies, Mika smiled contentedly.
Suddenly, a flash of green zipped past him. It was Lubbock.
"It seems Chelsea has delivered the message."
"Then it's time to proceed to the next phase."
Mika chuckled, savoring his food.
---
That evening, Chelsea returned to the palace precisely on time.
As she passed through the imposing gates, she couldn't help but wonder when she would next have the opportunity to leave.
Upon returning to Mika's chambers, she was surprised to find him absent.
"You specifically instructed me to return early, and yet you're late!"
"How inconsiderate!" she muttered, shaking her head in exasperation.
"Alice, you're back!"
A voice suddenly called out from behind a nearby pillar, startling her.
Recognizing the familiar voice, Chelsea turned. "Kurome, it's you."
Kurome, holding her Teigu, sat on the floor enjoying some snacks.
She looked drastically different from before.
Thanks to Airmid's care, Kurome had recovered from her ailments and regained her health.
She had also joined the Yahweh Familia, receiving Falna from Gabriel.
And she had begun training in the Breathing Styles.
All of this had greatly increased her strength.
However, after Airmid's promotion to Grand General, Kurome had been reassigned to serve as Mika's personal guard.
After all, compared to Airmid and Mellie, Mika lacked capable subordinates.
That was why Kurome had been sent to his side.
"Kurome, aren't you a personal guard? Why weren't you with His Majesty today when he went out?" Chelsea asked.
"…I was ditched."
"…"
A heavy silence fell over the room as Chelsea absorbed Kurome's words.
After a long pause, Mika finally appeared.
"Your Majesty!"
"Alice, Kurome, it's you."
"Perfect timing. Go and fetch Mellie and Airmid. I have matters to discuss with them."
"Yes, Your Majesty!"
Chelsea and Kurome immediately hurried to find Mellie and Airmid.
…
"That's the situation!"
Back at Night Raid's base, Lubbock quickly relayed the information he had received from Chelsea to Najenda.
"So it's true!"
Najenda's expression turned grim as she listened to Lubbock's report.
"In a sense, the Empire we once knew has already fallen."
Recalling her past experiences within the Empire, a complex mix of emotions flickered in Najenda's eyes. She hadn't imagined the Empire would fall in such a manner.
Pushing aside her sentiments, Najenda refocused on Mika, the current ruler of the Empire.
He was now the true enemy of the Revolutionary Army.
But the information from Chelsea's report filled Najenda with dread.
Defeating General Budo and General Esdeath.
Subduing General Esdeath.
And being the one who unleashed that colossal flaming sword.
Each of these feats was astonishing, almost unbelievable.
And now, all three pointed to the same individual.
Such a powerful figure was undoubtedly a formidable threat to the Revolutionary Army.
Perhaps even an insurmountable one.
But a final confrontation was inevitable.
Shaking her head, Najenda thought of Chelsea.
"If things are truly as dire as she described, then all we can do is wish her well."
Recalling Chelsea's resolve, Najenda's eyes filled with determination.
She hadn't despaired even when facing Esdeath; she couldn't afford to lose hope now.
"Lubbock, inform Akame and the others of everything you know. Akame will temporarily assume command."
"I must return to Revolutionary Army headquarters immediately to discuss our next move with the strategists there."
"Understood!"
Seeing Najenda's serious expression, Lubbock responded earnestly.
…
While Najenda was away, drastic changes unfolded once more in the Imperial Capital.
An order came from the palace: A craftsman devoted to the God of the Forge had replicated the great achievement of the first Emperor from a millennium ago, successfully forging new Teigu.
Therefore, the Emperor decreed that the God of the Forge would be recognized as the Empire's official God.
He would receive worship throughout the land.
Furthermore, the Emperor ordered all skilled craftsmen across the Empire to report to local officials and travel to the capital to participate in the Teigu forging project.
This decree sent shockwaves throughout the nation.
The current Emperor had rediscovered the lost art of forging Teigu and planned to mass-produce them.
This news was a devastating blow to those schemers who had anticipated the Empire's downfall and planned to seize power in the ensuing chaos.
After all, the Empire's millennium-long rule had been maintained by its absolute dominance in Teigu.
Throughout history, the Empire had faced several near collapses due to incompetent rulers.
But each time, it had survived thanks to its Teigu.
As long as the Empire controlled these powerful weapons, no force could overthrow it.
Take General Budo's Teigu, which could manipulate thunderclouds, for example. It offered an undeniable advantage in battle.
The widespread belief in the Empire's impending doom stemmed from the fact that, over the millennia, many of the original forty-eight Teigu had been lost, scattered throughout the land.
This had significantly weakened the Empire's control.
But with the Emperor now able to forge new Teigu, the Empire would regain its military dominance.
After all, compared to the newly established Empire of the past, the current Empire had experienced Teigu users.
And their accumulated knowledge and resources were vast.
This made it possible for the Empire to produce hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of new Teigu.
This would undoubtedly stabilize the Empire's position.
Therefore, upon hearing the Emperor's decree, many ambitious individuals abandoned their plans.
Compared to an Empire armed with countless Teigu, any rebellion seemed futile.
Upon learning of this decree, Najenda, who had returned to the Revolutionary Army headquarters, immediately flew back to the capital, riding a Danger Beast.
Meanwhile, skilled craftsmen from all over the Empire began making their way to the capital upon receiving the Emperor's summons.
After all, participating in the Teigu forging project was an immense honor.
