"Clang!"
"Kurome!" Akame's heart pounded as she felt the force transmitted through her blade and recognized the familiar figure before her.
"Yes, it's me, Sister!" Kurome grinned maniacally, pressing her attack with Yatsufusa, her Teigu.
The two sisters, once separated by opposing sides, now faced each other in a deadly confrontation.
Kurome, her health restored and strength enhanced, was finally ready to unleash her full power against her elder sister.
"Clang!" Their blades clashed again, and they separated.
Akame's heart sank as she gazed at her grinning sister.
"We've been tricked!" Seeing Kurome standing before her, Akame knew their operation wouldn't go as planned.
In a high-stakes battle like this, even the slightest misstep could be fatal.
Concern for her comrades filled her eyes.
"Kurome, have you been waiting for us?"
"Why would I tell an Imperial traitor like you?" Kurome taunted. She hadn't forgotten the Emperor's instructions to keep certain matters secret.
"Then let's settle this here and now!"
To protect her comrades, Akame knew she had to defeat her sister quickly and eliminate the criminals within the compound.
She had long since prepared herself for the possibility of killing her sister, who now served the Empire.
"You likely feel the same," she thought, gazing at Kurome.
"Of course!" Kurome shouted, and a wave of killing intent washed over them.
The next moment, they clashed.
…
"Argh!" Tatsumi roared as lightning rained down from the sky, summoned by his Teigu.
He was simultaneously battling Bulat, forcing the others to divide their attention between fighting him and dodging the lightning strikes.
"Damn, this guy is relentless!"
"And he's gotten so much stronger! Compared to last time, his power has increased dramatically!"
Bulat struggled to maintain his footing in the close-quarters combat, each clash sending jolts of electricity through his body.
He knew he was being electrocuted, but Incursio protected him from being incapacitated.
However, as the fight continued, his body began to weaken, the cumulative effect of the electric shocks taking their toll.
"Damn it! I can't fall here!" With sheer willpower, Bulat held his ground against Tatsumi's relentless assault.
Meanwhile, Susanoo, who had initially been overwhelming Wave, was forced to ease his attacks under the barrage of Tatsumi's lightning.
He wasn't at full strength, his combat abilities limited.
While Bulat and Susanoo were still holding their own, Leone and Sheele were struggling.
Sheele, who had initially been evenly matched with Seryu and her biological-type Teigu, Hekatonkheires (Koro), was now at a disadvantage due to the constant lightning strikes.
As for Leone and Run, neither could gain the upper hand.
One in the air, the other on the ground, they were locked in a stalemate.
If not for Tatsumi's lightning assisting Run, they could have fought indefinitely.
Although the situation was unfavorable for Night Raid, they were still holding on.
Their main concern was Akame.
She had entered the compound and hadn't emerged. Clearly, her mission wasn't going smoothly.
If this continued, and reinforcements from the palace arrived, they would be trapped.
Just then, a flash of light streaked across the night sky, hurtling toward the courtyard.
"It's Pumpkin! Mine has completed her mission and is coming to reinforce us!" Seeing the familiar attack, Night Raid's spirits lifted.
Simultaneously, threads shot out, ensnaring Run in the air and Seryu on the ground, interrupting their attacks on Leone and Sheele.
The one manipulating the threads was hidden in the shadows, but Night Raid instantly recognized the familiar technique.
It was Lubbock!
…
"Hmph! Looks like I'm the one saving the day again!" Mine muttered, perched atop a building, aiming Pumpkin at the criminals within the protected compound.
Shot after shot rang out, each bullet claiming a life.
Soon, the courtyard was littered with corpses.
"Mission accomplished!" she declared with a smug grin.
But her smile didn't last. She knew their biggest challenge was escaping.
As she turned her Teigu's scope towards the compound walls, she spotted a figure sitting there, observing the battle with a smile.
She recognized him instantly. He was the one who had caught her beam barehanded.
A wave of fear washed over her. He was an opponent she couldn't defeat.
He also posed the greatest obstacle to their escape. He was perched on the wall, yet no one seemed to notice him.
This unsettling realization intensified her fear.
As if sensing her gaze, the man turned to look at her.
"He's spotted me!" Mine's mind went blank.
But Mika merely waved at her before turning his attention back to the battle.
Mine breathed a sigh of relief. But the next moment, her heart sank as she saw Sheele, who had been evenly matched with Seryu, suddenly falter, on the verge of defeat.
"Sheele!" Without hesitation, Mine aimed Pumpkin at Seryu.
…
"Seryu, dodge!" Tatsumi shouted, his voice filled with urgency.
During his recent training, he had finally achieved the Transparent World state, which explained his rapid improvement.
With Transparent World, he could perceive everything around him. He had seen Mine aiming at Seryu.
Like Akame, Tatsumi valued his comrades. After this period of working together, and having helped Seryu confront her twisted sense of justice, he now considered her a friend and was determined to protect her.
Hearing his warning, Seryu, though she didn't see any attack coming, immediately leaped to the side. She trusted Tatsumi's judgment implicitly.
Just as she moved, several bullets struck where she had been standing moments before.
"Koro!" she shouted.
"Roar!" Hekatonkheires, leaped in front of her, shielding her from the incoming bullets.
Seryu had survived the attack, and Sheele, having recovered from her momentary lapse, glared at her opponent.
Although Night Raid had been training diligently, their progress couldn't match that of Tatsumi and the others guarding the compound.
As Teigu users favored by Mika, both Run and Seryu had received Falna and had begun training in the Breathing Styles and cultivation techniques developed by Gabriel.
All of this had led to a dramatic increase in their strength. Their rate of improvement far surpassed that of Night Raid.
While Night Raid had anticipated gaining an advantage by exploiting the time it took for Tatsumi and the others to adapt to their new powers, that gap had already been closed.
This explained why they were struggling to achieve victory. It also explained Sheele's sudden disadvantage.
She had been fighting Koro, with Seryu providing ranged support.
However, to create an opening for her comrades, Sheele had targeted Seryu directly, hoping to exploit her as a weakness.
After all, besides their core, the other weakness of biological-type Teigu was their user. Sheele was well aware of this.
But she had underestimated Seryu's growth.
Seryu had once fought Leone, and Leone, knowing this weakness, had targeted her directly.
At the time, despite her martial arts training, Seryu was no match for Leone. She had relied on her Teigu to avoid being exploited as a weakness.
Leone's assessment of Seryu's strength had been "average." While her skills were decent compared to ordinary people, they were nothing special compared to Night Raid.
It was this outdated information that led Sheele into Seryu's trap.
Facing an opponent far stronger than she had anticipated, Sheele was sent flying by a series of blows.
If not for Mine's timely intervention, Seryu might have pressed her advantage and inflicted serious damage.
…
"I can't let this continue!" Tatsumi thought, observing the battle.
Mine's earlier attack had served as a warning.
Leaving a sniper unchecked during close-quarters combat was a recipe for disaster.
He couldn't allow her to continue firing.
With newfound resolve, Tatsumi pushed past his limits.
He had already been fighting at full strength, but now he needed even more power.
As he pushed his body further, the thunderclouds in the sky intensified, expanding their coverage.
The armor Mika had crafted for him greatly enhanced his physical abilities, but it also limited the range of his lightning manipulation compared to the original Adramelech.
However, this limitation had increased the potency of his lightning strikes.
Mika had believed that summoning excessively large thunderclouds would disperse the Teigu user's power, so he had modified Adramelech accordingly.
But now, Tatsumi needed that wider area of effect.
Unnoticed by the others, the thunderclouds he summoned continued to expand.
Until…
"Now! Lightning Strike!" With a roar, Tatsumi unleashed a bolt of lightning, aiming directly at Mine's sniping position.
"What?!" Mine's face paled as she saw the descending lightning. She desperately wanted to dodge, but it was too late.
"Argh!" The lightning struck her, and she collapsed, unconscious.
"Mine!"
"Mine!"
"Mine!" Night Raid watched in horror as Mine was struck down.
The sheer power of the attack left them little hope for her survival.
They shouted her name, but their voices couldn't reach her.
"Bastard! I'll kill you!" Believing Mine was dead, Leone, consumed by rage, charged toward Tatsumi.
"You're not going anywhere! I'm your opponent!" Run, hovering in the air, launched a volley of feathers, attempting to intercept her.
But the next moment, threads shot out, deflecting the feathers.
"No, your opponent is me!" Lubbock emerged from the forest, glaring at Run.
"Leone, I'll handle this bird-brained idiot. You go avenge Mine!" Lubbock's voice was filled with rage.
The death of his comrade had struck him deeply. They had just worked together to eliminate those criminals, and now she was gone.
Lubbock knew that, as assassins, death wasn't something they could avoid.
However, unless it was a mission target, they weren't permitted to seek personal revenge, as it could lead them into a trap.
If they wanted revenge, they had to act immediately.
Hearing Lubbock's words, Leone, without a word, charged toward Tatsumi.
She was consumed by rage.
Tatsumi, maintaining his Transparent World, observed her every move. He calmly deflected her attack and sent her flying.
"You're no match for me," he taunted.
"We'll see about that!" Leone snarled, gritting her teeth.
